Decent Helmet Mirror

I've got used to having a mirror. It's usually mounted at the end of my flat bars. It fell off on Sunday and I realised that it's got in the way of my most comfortable hand position using my bar ends.


So is there a decent helmet mirror available? Will my varifocals render it useless?


Are there any other positions I can mount a mirror?

If it's flat bars, you can mount mirrors with a band-on mounting inboard of the grips.  Something like a long-stem B&M Cyclestar.

I've got one of those mirrors that clips to the arm of your glasses, but never really got on with it.

I got one of those.  I quite like it, but it did take a while to get used to it.  Used it not so much for cars, trucks and busses, as on a Brum commute there is always something right up your arsed and it's best to ride with that assumption anyway.  I used it more as a 'other cyclist' warning.  Or to check on my kids if they were drafting me.
More useful out here for EV spotting.

They're quite tricky to get the angle right, particularly on drop bars as head angle changes with hand position.  Probably better on a bent.

Thing with recumbents is that they're generally easier to mount mirrors to in sensible places than uprights.  Unless you run out of room on USS handlebars.

I didn't know B&M did a long stem mirror, so I've ordered one of those and I'll mount it inboard and hope it's got the reach.

Personally I’m uncomfortable with a helmet mirror, the thought of a sticky out thing so close to my eye in a shunt is pretty uncomfortable.

I am yet to find a truly acceptable solution, but this looks pretty useful

I've been using the Take A Look mirror for several years. I mount it to my helmet and it works very well with my varifocals.

That's what I have at the moment, but its location stops me from using the bar ends properly. When it fell off on Sunday and I could place my hands exactly where I wanted, I realised what I'd been missing.

One of those things that I’ve often felt looks like a good idea, but have never got round to trying so if anybody wants to be a guinea pig, I’d be interested to hear how it goes. ;-)

ETA: obviously changing hand position will change the aim of the mirror, but I figure it’d be relatively easy to tilt the wrist when looking - a bit like looking at one’s watch.

I've found the problem with Zefal mirrors is that the 'mirror' bit is made of some sort of soft plastic and they soon get scratched to the point of unusability .

I didn't know B&M did a long stem mirror, so I've ordered one of those and I'll mount it inboard and hope it's got the reach.

Works well on Dutch style bars.  And on the tiller of the Red Baron.  It only has to be able to see over your hand (or shoulder, in the case of the low-racer), so probably doesn't need to stick out any further than the end of the bars.

Use these on my flat bar Bridgestone Moulton. The mirror is very shallow, but I find it good enough in practice. Can fold the mirror in and out on the fly when negotiating narrow gateways. Don't usually use the LH mirror in the UK.

Agreed.  I have a left hand mirror on the Baron, but I only really need it on the race track (and the occasional shared-use path).
