Yeah, it'll be fine - the use-by date is just there to scare you

out of date chicken soup - is it safe?
« on: 23 February, 2009, 12:42:08 pm »
I was off work last week and forgot to take my pot of M&S Oakham Chicken Soup home with me. I was expecting it to have been thrown away but no, it's still there and still unopened. The use-by date is 16 Feb.

I'm in two minds about whether or not to risk it. I'll probably err on the side of caution, but just out of interest, what would you do?

I wouldn't touch it! A day or two, ok, but that's pretty old. Not worth it, in my opinion.

Seeing as it's unopened, I'd look at it and sniff it and see what I thought and then decide. If it was opened, I'd bin it.

I'd eat it - provided it smelled ok and there weren't lumps of mould floating in it.

There's no vibrations, but wait.

It should be fine - I guess it's a packet of fresh, pasteurised soup?  Just make sure it's nice and hot before eating.  We quite often have chicken stock in the fridge for a week or so before using.

Throw it out

When I was a kid my dad ate an out of date meat pie

He caught salmonella.  Then my mum, my two sisters and me caught salmonella off my dad.

We spent the next two weeks on the bog

As long as you boil it or nuke it for long enough you'll kill all the nasty bacteria.  If it smells OK it will probably taste OK too

I don't even look at sell by dates, if it ain't mouldy or smelly it gets eaten (cheese obviously excepted)

You will not however kill the toxins the little germs have been producing for the last ten days.
