I thought the bank episode was pretty good -  with a decently 'scary' alien species.  Peter Capaldi as the Doctor is excellent, a first class actor who can do the tense moments convincingly, as well as barbed wit, and humour.  Just hope the stories keep getting better for him.

I'm clearly not on the same wavelength as YACF DrWho fans! Although Capaldi was very good, I thought this one was pretty dull overall.

It was still very watchable, but very below par.

IMHO!

That was bit meh - almost 'filler' episode.  I reckon most would rather more alien story content & less of 'Clara & Mr Pink'.  Let's see what spidey alien does next week.

Hmm I think the quiet on this thread shows the true nature of the last episode.

What surprised me was that it was already the 8th episode, I was sure it was only the 5-6th.

Well, if you insist... I watched it on iPlayer at 23:33 last night, pre-warned by the reactions on the twitterwebs.  Here are the pertinent IRC logs:

Quote
23:32  * kim attempts to forget everything she knows about physics
23:42 <kim> dammit
23:43 <kim> the gravity i can forgive, but quindar tones...
23:43  * kim tries to forget engineering too
23:44 <Red> ...
23:59 <kim> i think it's about time to forget biology...
23:59 <kim> ...yup.
00:27 <kim> i think doctor who may have jumped the dalek
00:32 <nat> but yes, very little of that made sense, except Clara’s reaction at the end
00:35 <kim> i did like the yo-yo, of course
00:36 <nat> yes, Dark Season was referencing the same thing of course :)
00:41 <Red> oh, forgot it was on
00:42 <Red> I've just been a bit underwhelmed with it so far
00:42 <Red> Peter Capaldi has so much potential, and they're just not using it
00:43 <nat> I thought his acting at the end was amazing
00:44 <Red> I'm just waiting for them to DO something
00:44 <kim> i thin his acting's been pretty good throughout
00:44 <kim> shame about the stories
00:45 <nat> the episode looked brilliant, I loved what they did with Courtney, the ending was really powerful and justified, but the actual main story was bewilderingly ludicrous
00:45 <Red> yes, it's the stories
00:45 <Red> they just seem so... cbbc
00:45 <kim> i'm quite liking courtney, but in a 35-year-old-who-thinks-year-tens-are-like-that kind of way

...at which point the conversation drifted to 15th century BMX bikes, Dogtanian and the catholic church.

watched it tonight, Dad was all conservation of mass until I said it was a children's program.

Capaldi is a good doc, the radio episodes with sheridan smith are wonderful, it is unfortunate that the plots have had such holes in them.

I am trying to remember the title of the old SF story they ripped off (again) for the basis of the tale, in which all of the planets are eggs, and the end of the story has

OK everybody, before you all get worked up on Saturday evening, about plot holes and Scientifically implausible events....

Well somebody needed to break the news.

Something that's been bothering me for a long time... Why is 8.30 now deemed a suitable time for kids' telly?

It's like it deliberately failed the Bechdel test, and then hung a lampshade on it.

But still less annoying than last week's, and I liked the jelly babies.

Doesn't applying tests make for a rather 'analytical' viewing experience...  ;)

That made me laugh.

I watched yesterday's and the previous three (in the correct order) today. I stand by what I said before - Peter Capaldi is a great doctor, but the episodes are shit.
They're not holding my attention at all. I didn't even notice any jelly babies.

I liked the 'faux 1920's' where they were singing a Queen song  (Don't stop me now?) as if it were a 20's ballad in a nightclub.
Otherwise it was a bit Meh. Why are chief engineers the offspring of diesel engines?

Jelly babies was the highlight of the episode.

Was I the only one that was hoping that this was goodbye to the sidekick. But sadly it wasn't to be.

Frak Skinner did a good job, story line a bit better but still lacking, Peter is a good Doc Who.

Nobody else spotted the two spoken lines where he was channeling Tom Baker?  just my imagination then.

I'm still waiting for his stint as the doctor to get started, and still drifting away from the show.

Well, reading Stephen Baxter's latest there was a very clear nod, where a central character describes a wormholey thing as bigger on the inside than...you know the rest.

They've done the Titanic in space, and now the Orient Express ditto. Seems to show a groping for some originality that isn't there.

I'm a bit surprised by this protest agaionst Claras skirt length. She's a lot less raunchy than many action female characters in this market, and her predecessor showed a LOT more leg.
Her '20s flapper dress looked pretty much bang-on to me.

Although if you're against employing actresses for their looks,  you may have a point (though again, this applies to almost every companion, and most modern genre heroines).

I'm not getting tired of the length of the skirts, more the wooden acting - no life, no character - just reading out lines while trying to remember to blink cutely. We need someone who can play up against Peter. This series still need an episode that would make you go - now that was a doctor who episode, me likey, lets watch it again.

Its all about the Doctor. Always has been.
River Song was the only real 'foil' he's had, and they came pretty close to overdoing that!
(Alex Kington is also an unusually strong actor, they'd struggle to find someone else to pull that sort of role off - within the talent budget they appear to have.)

They are sidekicks. That's what theyre for. IMHO anyway!
