I wondered that too

Maybe because his judgment is so screwed that he thinks he can do anything now, so there'd be no need to do anything other than take them home ?

Bodger, I had the same thought. I was expecting him to take Adelaide into the future to meet her grand-daughter.

I think it ended like it did a) to illustrate the point MV makes about him believing himself omnipotent, and b) to prove that he isn't omnipotent - after all, Adelaide's death was a fixed point in time, so it was going to happen one way or another.

But it's probably best not to analyse Dr Who too closely or you'll soon start to find all kinds of holes in the plot.

Able to transport sufficient building materials to build the roof 10ft thick, but no folding bikes. That sort of thing?

Marscrete.

They did seem to have a whole load of kit, but couldn't be arsed to bring a few lightweight folders.

Actually, it would probably have been easier to have just not constructed the base with damn great big corridors linking the elements together for no good reason.

It may well be desirbale to isolate elements, eg put the a reactor a distance away, with ramparts of "earth" to minimise radiation exposure.  Likewise a launch/landing pad would sensibly be physically isolated from the base to minimise exposure to accidents.  This doesn't seem to have been the case here though, they just seem to have wanted a hub and spoke station design, with bits put stupidly large distances apart, and just vast unused sections of the station, which would increase the leak rate into the atmosphere, and create a higher risk of a rupture (aside from the already mentioned stupid distances to travel in an emergency).

(Actually, you would probably want to bury the base anyway.  Mars doesn't have a magnetosphere, so exposure to the solar wind would be a problem, although there is the suggestion that localised fields (possibly frozen into rocks) could provide miniature magnetospheres for this purpose... but I'm getting a bit OT).

Whilst the Dr does seem to be suffering a bit from delusions of omnipotence (presumably to give an excuse to provide some new companions in the near future), he is 900 odd years old, and quite experienced in mucking about with time.  Like James T Kirk and the Prime Directive on Star Trek, he breaks the rules more often than he keeps to them.  It seemed a bit rich for Adelaide, with her 60 odd years of experience, bugger all of it related to time travel, to in effect be saying, "Actually I know more about this than you". :-\
Actually, it is rocket science.

it was good to see an Ood.

Aye. They are my favourite "aliens" of the new DW. I downloaded TWoM this morning and burned it onto DVD for everyone to watch again. At the end I saw the credit for the guy who played Ood Sigma and couldn't hepl feeling sorry for the bloke. Imagine getting news that you're going to be in DW again but when the script arrives all it says is "stand, move head on way then the other, disappear". Bugger!

I did enjoy the episode and watching it with 2 peeps aged 7 and 9 brought me back to my childhood hiding behind the sofa. Proper stuff that has something for everyone. But wouldn't the appearance of Adelaide back on Earth rather mess history up a bit? And what about Yuri and the other one?

Yes - but it does provide lots of corridors to run away in.

Good point, and as one of the previous episodes said, they do do a lot of running! ;D

I think what I liked best about this episode was that it was filmed in a quarry.

Wii + iPlayer + Dr Who = up to speed at last!

That was a good one!  Very grown-up, I was fully expecting him to emo out over the destruction, then he has a Crowning Moment of Awesome, calls time his biatch, and STILL got hosed.  Ha!

Scary too.  Naughty water.  Brrr.
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

I wonder how difficult it would be to do get_iplayer HD copy -> Bluray ?

I don't have a Bluray player yet, so haven't looked into the complexities of generating home produced discs.

For some programmes, the BBC-HD version is spectacularly better.  It's really noticeable on things like Wainwright Walks, where the landscapes were rendered so much better, with more detail and without the artefacts of the SD version.

Yebbut that'd need a DVD player and all mine are full of fluff or Guitar Hero.   :demon:
