Don't know how he would have compared to Hartnell, though, since I've not seen many Hartnell episodes ...

Doctor Who - Story No 15 - The Space Museum - 1965.

Ah but Peter Cushing was the film version, so doesn't count, and Paul McGann just doesn't count due to his totally wooden performance.... so is ackshully 10 :)

There are some episodes that do show Paul McGann when the doctors history is involved.  The Christmas one with the cyber king was one.

Paul McGann's Doctor has been included several times.

In the first episode of this series he is one of the incarnations the Atraxi see when the doctors sequence through

So he is, I hadn't even realised that they go through every previous Doctor in that sequence!
Actually, it is rocket science.

OK. So there was a separate Scottish ship. Or was there?

The way the story was written it suggested that both the Scottish ship and the English ship were built at the same time; the schoolgirl says something like, "The Scots wanted a ship of their own" to Pond whilst she's trying to pick the padlock.

The star whale was the last of its kind. So; how was the Scottish ship powered?  It seemed to me, from the way the story was presented, that the English used the star whale as a 'last resort' solution which suggests either lack of technology or lack of time.  Constraints that would also apply to any hypothetical Scottish ship.

I don't think there ever was a separate Scottish ship.  I reckon those untrustworthy sassenachs either ditched the Scots or fed them to the star whale.

Yet another reason that Scotland should declare independence now:)

I expect that the Scots just lived at the other end of the one ship but people believed that they were on a separate ship.

The Brits can leave The Scots behind? How can that work?

...either that or the Scots had a bunch of Scotties borrowed off of Star Trek to build a ship from a pile of leftover bits (a la A-Team!)

The girl they meet, the school girl Mandy, looks very much like, and dressed the same as, the niece of the Peter Cushing Dr. Who, Susan.

The Scots used their massively superior technological abilities to build a decent ship powered by dilithium crystals and Irn Bru, and left months ago, with every other country from Earth. (Or perhaps, in best Tartan Army tradition, they chartered a submarine). England was too busy buggering about and ended up having to be rescued by a nstarwhale.

Why hasn't anyone photoshopped a narwhal-tusk to a screengrab of the star whale?

Have you noticed how many references to bikes there have been in recent episodes? Well, Waters of Mars and this last one. So, two. But still.

The little girl said "Scotland wanted their own ship" There was no reference to how successful it was or if it still existed. It could have crashed and burned without a spazwhal or whatever it was called. Which could be a reference to where Scotland would go without England  ;)

This is brilliant (but kind of spoilerish if you don't want some big clues as to how the series is likely to develop, so be warned):
The Great Doctor Who Conspiracy Of The Fifth Season   Bleeding Cool Comic Book News and Rumors

It does answer a couple of questions I've had so far, the main one being when the hell the first episode was supposed to be set, which has been really bugging me. Can't believe I didn't spot the clues.
