anemometer/weather station
« on: 21 September, 2021, 10:24:09 am »
The best weather online I can find online (Windy.com) tells lies for wind speed here. Currently says it is 19kn - the sea is whitecaps and foam, trees are frantically lashing.

I'd quite like to get accurate wind and temp readings. Anyone installed or built a reliable weather station?  Would have to be able to cope with sustained winds over 70kn and higher gusts.

I have a Davis Vantage Pro. It's the version that seems to be the Met Office standard for automatic weather stations.

I think it undermeasures rainfall by about 10%. My anemometer is definitely far too low for decent wind speed readings. My garden doesn't fit the standard for pukka officially ratified weather stations because I haven't got a nice big flat lawn and there are too many brick edifices in the way. I think the thermometer is accurate, but in hot weather it's not that uncommon for the maximum temperature I record to be higher than the Met Office's national maximum, quit simply because our small south-facing garden is a sun trap with brickwork on 3 sides of it.

Our rain gauge signed off when visitors with a caravan thought the data cable was a clothes line.  Then next door's kid put a football through the anemometer.

We have an Instromet installation. Just wind speed, direction, pressure and temperature.

The sender unit is mounted to a 'surplus to requirements' dinghy spinnaker pole bolted onto the side of our chimney stack.

Getting to the sender unit is a bit perilous, but I'm still young/stupid enough to do so if required. It was a wedding present in 1999 and I've had to bring it down a couple of times; once for a failed temp sender unit and the second to sort the noisy anemometer bearing out.

The display unit is in our hallway, so provides the perfect update for what's ahead of you when you set off cycling.

Rain gauges are basically spider nests.

I suspect that in Mr C's part of the world they'd be spider swimming pools.

Rain gauges are basically spider nests.

Weep holes in walls are basically horizontal spider nests.

Through Contacts, I can suggest FTtechnologies.com What's nice is that's is a solid state wind sensor with no moving parts, although I have no idea the cost of one.
