Are you coming by train, Oaky? If so, are you coming to Manningtree or Colchester. Manningtree is nicer, of course...

A quick squint at the timetables suggest I could be in Colchester at 19:12 or Manningtree at 19:22, if I manage to catch the 18:20 from Liverpool St.   With a following wind and a prompt (well a few minutes early!) departure from work that should be do-able.   If I miss that one then it's ~20 minutes later at Manningtree.

I think a start and finish from Manningtree would be best overall as it's much nicer. If we aim to be at Manningtree Station at 7:20 that should hopefully work OK. I have plans for two pubs which are actually fairly near each other but I'll do some sort of weird route between 'em. Maybe 8-10 miles to the first pub (which does food if you require it) and then 5-6 to the second pub, with a 4 mile ride back to Manningtree after that. How does that sound?

Sounds good to me.

I may ride home afterwards, depending on how I feel.

I'm all set.  Bike+gear here in office.  Ticket extension to Manningtree in my pocket.

I just noticed that my intended train is an intercity though -- I hope they don't get funny about my taking a folding bike on there.

I've got a printout of the website page with the "There are no restrictions on folding bicycles" line on it, but I might give them a call and check anyhow.  I doubt I can get there in time to sort a bike reservation out before travelling.   :-\  (If I'd realised the intercity bit beforehand I'd have asked when I bought the ticket this morning  :-[).

You'll be OK - but if it's an inter-city Norwich bound train, it would probably be less hassle to put it in the guard's van unfolded.

It is Norwich-bound, so I might try the guard's van "on spec", but I almost certainly won't have the time to get a reservation for it.

I can't imagine they'll worry about a reservation for the Norwich train - I've never had one and I've stuck my trike on there multiple times.

I'll drive over. Decided to bring my folding bike too, since its easier to sling in the Ka, and so we'll all be on funny bikes of one kind or another!
See y'all soon.

Parking's £2.10 at Manningtree Station (I think!). Alternatively you could park Chez Moi which is 100 yards from the second (and last) pub that we're visiting and ride down to Manningtree with me; I'd leave home about 6:55.

That was fun!

AH led Tomsk and I on a very pleasant ride out to a lovely pub (The Haywain at Little Bromley(?) -- Tendring CAMRA pub of the year 2009 and 2010) with a nice range of ales.  I sampled the Sticklegs Malt Shovel Mild, another ale I can't remember the name of, and a brew from the Harwich brewery.  They aso had Adnams on, but I didn't try it.

Just short of 20 miles (including my to/from bits) with some mildly undulating terrain, and my first MEMWNS on fixed.  I didn't want to let go too ferociously downhill, but managed to hit 30.8mph.  If my calculations are correct, on my 67.3 inch gear, that's a cadence of ~154rpm.  (Edit:  (30.8 * 1760 * 36) / (67.3 * 60 * pi) = 153.833067 ;))

Thanks, AH:  you have a wonderful taste in pubs (doubly impressive on account of being a teetotaller), .

I am going to the compasses at Littley Green tonight in half an hour with a guy from the village to coerce Joss the landlord into participating in some way in our cycling day in July. If anyone's at a loose end nearby would be nice to see you. Soz for short notice.

Didn't see this until this morning (and I was stuck at home until 9:30 anyway last night) otherwise I'd have bombed over.  Any excuse!

This week's official venue  is

02 Jun 2010   Red Lion   Finchingfield

What's interest looking like so far?

I was chatting to chief at the weekend, and we  were pondering a change of venue if interest is low... perhaps an early visit to check out the Walnut Tree at Broads Green?

(As it happens I was in Finchingfield, albeit by car, yesterday and happened to catch their annual three-legged race, which involves a drink at each of the three pubs and two crossings of the pond. I was not a competitor.)

To add a couple of known datapoints to this: AH and wowbagger are touring in Germany, and Oscars Dad is away too.

Of the usual crowd1, that leaves myself, chief and Tomsk potentially available tomorrow night.

Anyone else up for a ride out?  Anyone have any firm preferences as to venue? (for or against Finchingfield).

Tomsk?

1. OK "crowd" is stretching things a bit.

I am indeed away. In the Lakes. I got up Wrynose albeit pushing up the last bit. I didn't attempt Hardknott. Give me a Alp or Mont Ventoux in 40 degs any day.

Have fun tomorrow night.

Sorry chaps, I'm going to book club tomorrow night, as I have 1)actually read and 2)enjoyed, the book this month! ['Confinement' by Katherine McMahon.] I took it with me when I was away the other week and read much of it at pubs/cafes during my leisurely off-road pootle across East Anglia.
So its coffee n'cake, not pints and pickled eggs for me tomorrow!

I'm in Germany with Wowbagger so I send both of our apologies. We will be on the River Rhein tucking into cracking food and drinking beer and orange juice. So there!

Sounds like it'll just be chief and I, then.  In that case, we'll probably not go as far as Finchingfield.

As of Saturday lunchtime, he hadn't.  I did pass on some advice, but I'm guessing neither he nor I remember what it was.  ;D

I'm not sure I remember much of Saturday to be honest  :-X

I'm off work this week, well at least I'm not in an office working, so will be heading to a retail establishment to assemble some of these so called camping products for future adventures.

I believe sausages, tent and a hammer are the core requirements

I have a pass to join you at Walnut Tree etc this is dependent on getting away from work on time. I can introduce you to the Rose and Crown which has a wide selection of bar snacks and is nearby. Can you give me a start time please. I shall pm Oaky my mobile for any changes.

Great stuff!  I am planning to meet chief at Chelmsford station at around 7pm, heading to the Walnut Tree via the Chignal Road, possibly via a quick pint at the Pig and Whistle (just for thoroughness of research, you understand  ;))

I'm sure we could find a way to kill time at/near CHM station if 7's too early for you.

I'll be on a white fixed folder, in a SMWS jersey.

chief will be heading down from Howe Street to meet up with me there, if you're coming from that direction you may want to check with him regarding times etc.
