Amy Whitehouse - What a Waste

Is this a another Music death waiting to happen?

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/H8puKtroKOo&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/H8puKtroKOo&rel=1</a>

She claims to have been drug-free for 3 years but I'd say that doesn't involve booze.

First time I saw her was on "Later with Jools" and thought she was amazing but this is just tragic and her management need to prevent this sort of freak show.   The freak shows seem to be outweighing the good performances now.  Someone in need of help I'd say, but she is an adult and seems to have discount rates at the Priory.

Maybe if she watches the video herself it may act as a wake-up call but I'm thinking she may well end up in that great rock band of wasted talent (Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and so on)

Don't do drugs kids.

Lee, I can't face watching the clip but I was only telling one of my pupils what a great singer Amy Whitehouse is/was and an example of what real talent is compared with so many other successful "singers" AND what a mess she was and NOT TO GO THERE.

What a waste indeed.

Of all the 'Brit School' acts she was the 'Bad Girl'. You see big pictures of her in those shops that sell prints of Al Pacino or Michael Caine, with a shotgun. So all this is predictable. If you don't want to see it, listen to Katy Melua.

A poster image doesn't necessarily mean anything (hence Michael Caine and Al Pacino aren't really involved in Gang killings).

Was it really so predictable?  She seemed fairly well balanced when I saw her early performances and interviews.

As for Katy Melua, obviously I'd rather listen to Amy Whitehouse mumbling nonesense drunkenly into a mic than that.

Robert de Niro didn't actually get those iconic tattoos for the film Cape Fear.

Jimi Hendrix didn't die from a drugs habit but in a stupid cockup.  He took some of his girlfriends sleeping pills (he was an insomniac)  but they were prescription ones and hugely stronger than the over the counter ones he was familiar with. I don't think I have ever read anything about Hendrix being a junkie, liked his pot and booze though.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

If Mama Cass had given Karen Carpenter her chicken sandwich they'd both be alive.

Anyone else think Winehouse's performance wasn't that bad? Ok, she meanders around the song but that's jazz! She was pretty pissed thoughbut, tickets were £35 in a country where average monthly salary is less than £300..

Her management can try and get her help, but she won't stop until she's ready to stop. It's very sad.

I think it stretches the boundaries of what constitutes Jazz.

There was an excellent programme on R4 called "Free Wales Harmony", about the Welsh-language pop music from the 60s onwards (look it up, it's good). Meic Stevens (often lazily called the Welsh Bob Dylan) came out with an astounding anecdote I'd never heard before. Meic was feted by London music industry bigwigs in the late 60s (offered a 5-album deal by Warners as I recall), but turned them down to sing in his first language. Turns out he met Hendrix in a club the night before his death and Meic bought him a drink - a red wine like he was partial to himself. Jimi hadn't really encountered burgundy at that time, so he just poured it into his beer glass. Don't mix your drinks!

Katy Melua's scientifically corrected version of Nine Million Bicycles in Beijing is quite funny. Amy has never been known to accept authoritative revision, that's her problem at heart.

Amy Winehouse's problem are the promoters who exist on the back of her. It is deeply saddening when people like her and Pete Doherty (who will be playing at Leeds days after coming out of prison) are looked up to by so many young people.

I thought Katie Melua was just boring and anodyne, but when she took part in the scientific correction of the song with a good spirit, I warmed to her.

Amy Winehouse strikes me as the kind of tiresome person for whom no amount of attention is enough.

Probably true but the talent ....

Her performance of Love is a losing Game at the Brit Awards in 2008 was exceptional. In the middle of a media storm and drug problems she pulled it together to nail an exceptional an emotional performance. Mind you that's that last great performance I have seen her give.

Katie Melua seems like a lovely girl but I just can be arsed to listen to her sing, boring.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Oh, Amy can sing when she gets it together, but she's too unreliable.  I wouldn't pay to see her.  When there are so many talented female singers around, why bother with someone who might not even get as far as the stage, and, when she does, could deliver something like the Belgrade show?

From what I saw of the Belgrade show, the waste lay in the top-flight band stood behind her. They immediately sounded on a par with the Blockheads or any of the great Soul/Disco bands. I'd have been annoyed that they couldn't just wheel Amy off and let the band do instrumentals of her hits with improvised codas. I'd rather have seen that anyway. Modern shows have no leeway for that because of the computerised lighting routines.
