J. S. Bach - St. John Passion
« on: 23 March, 2017, 12:07:26 am »
My choir is performing this on 8th April I have spent a few evenings practising it with my Iphone and a bluetooth speaker set. It is an absolutely wonderful work.

We are singing it in English, but the recording I am using is in German, a performance conducted by John Eliot Gardner. I karaoke my way through it with, mostly, not too much trouble. However, one or two of the choruses are taken at such a pace that I struggle to keep up.

Break a leg!
VELOMANCER

Well that's the more blunt way of putting it but as usual he's dead right.

It is huge fun, even (especially!) the tricky fuge bits. And 'Ruht wohl' is utterly beautiful. Enjoy!

I love the St. John, and it's wonderful to sing.

It is! And who but Bach would write the graveside anthem as a minuet and trio?  :D

Well, off to the performance in about half an hour. Rehearsed today with the soloists and the orchestra. Let's just say that I hope the performance is better than today's rehearsal... :-\

Rehearsals are where one makes mistakes to get them all out of the system.  Good luck!

Disappointing performance. It's not possible to rehearse with the soloists because we hire them for the concert (don't know how much yesterday's cost, but I reckon it would have been about £1500. We reckon to lose a fair bit of money on every concert we run). We rehearse each chorus as a "stand-alone", with a chord from the accompanist and being counted in by the conductor, so that bit is easy. When it comes to the performance the soloists and the choir are supposed to lead seamlessly into each other for quite a few of the pieces and on two or three of the choruses we missed our cues. We covered the entries a bit in the afternoon rehearsal, but tbh I think we should have concentrated far more on the entries and less on the content once we had got going. We know the content pretty well.

Ho hum. Can't be helped. More of a disconcert than a concert.

PS My 3-word 7-note solo went perfectly!

If you've still got your score, and fancy a sing-along, it's on Radio 3 in half an hour ...
