Autumn Internationals
« on: 03 November, 2018, 03:18:04 pm »
I'm confused here, and probably out of date or something. I thought the autumn internationals were for the southern hemisphere sides to come and beat the European sides. But Wales seem to be playing Scotland. Won't they be playing again in the 6 nations in about 3 months?

Edit: Ah. It seems that Doddy Weir, former Scots international, has introduced A Thing called the Doddy Weir Cup, a kind of rugby Charity Shield in which the proceeds go towards research into motor neurone disease. I haven't bothered to read further as to whether it's an annual event between Scotland and Wales, or whether other countries might be involved in the future.

Also, as teams are using the games as early preparation  for next year's word cup, it seems very haphazard this year.  E.g.  New Zealand  playing Japan, in Japan today. Or yesterday.
Ireland playing Wales tonight. In Chicago!

Edit.  I meant Ireland playing Italy  tonight.
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

Interesting match at Twickenham.  :)
It is simpler than it looks.

I have read a bit more. Doddy Weir is himself suffering from motor neurone disease.

I watched Scotland from the comfort of my own armchair.
But the only way to watch Wales is in a Welsh pub.  The passion is most infectious.   :D

I don't know what the thoughts are in the pub about the Halfpenny incident, Basil, but I gained the impression that Halfpenny fumbled the ball just before he kicked it and that gave the tackler a bit more time to get to him.

You may well be right, Wow.  But no one in here will agree.  ;D

No, I was wrong. Watching it from the live camera angle I thought he had fumbled, but I just saw it from Halfpenny's right and he was in control the whole time.

Watching the England v NZ highlights, I haven't see a lovely rolling maul try like England's second for a long time. ISTR it was the hallmark of the Will Carling side when Dean Richards was no. 8.

My attempts to google have not found any highlights of Ireland v NZ. Anyone know where to find them?

Well, I found the whole match with unavoidable adverts, lasting well over 2 hours, and I found some highlight which showed the try, but didn't show the build up to the try. It was clear that the scorer ran through under a kick but the editors chose to omit the kick itself.

Not sure, Peter, but I think it was his own kick, therefore a classic piece of rugger worthy of winning a game.

It looked that way, but the clip began when the ball was at the top of its curve, so I'm having to sit through hours of adverts interspersed with short bursts of rugby.

I've watched the first half, and I can't remember a team withstanding such prolonged pressure without conceding a try. The All Black's defence is superb.

Edit: that also speaks volumes about the Irish patience. Many a side, unable to convert pressure into points, would start making mistakes and giving away counter-chances.

I've just seen the try from the "live" perspective. It was his own kick - very good indeed! And I love the respect that the crowd give the players. Totally silent when the place-kicker is preparing.

Superb performance by Ireland - and definitely worth watching all 80 minutes. One of the hardest-fought matches I've seen for a long time. It reminded me of the Wales-France 5-nations deciders of the 1970s.
