So I just got an offer from Maindru Photo to buy 24 jpegs in the incredible resolution of 2464x1648 pixels for 41 euro. Wow.

Now I have a vague recollection that in 2019 I got another email after a few weeks (months?) to buy at a much reduced price. Anyone have a better memory / saved that email?

You are correct.  30% discount was offered on 27/9/19.

2€ for a file that would provide an 8x5 photo doesn’t seem too bad.

Well over 100,000 photographs processed and sorted and available in less than a week. Not sure how many photographers there were out on the course, or if they were paid by results. Not sure how many images are actually sold. Unless a rider had a support ‘crew’ then they may not have any photos of themselves.

I doubt it is a huge money making exercise.

I don't mind the money (bought the set + prints in 2019), but I'm appalled that four years on they still have this low resolution. It's not even 4K (8MP).

You can get higher resolution pics, but they do cost a lot more!

It is a difficult business model, and I think most successful if you manage to get the organisers to pay up for the service, and provide the downloads for free. I've been a photographer for some mass participation events, and it is tedious and time consuming, and only worthwhile financially for a very few events.

Higher resolution from Maindru? I can't find them (their website is 10 years behind the time too). You can order single jpegs, 13 euro each  :o, but those are still "Photo Email Classic à télécharger".

More pixels would give some leeway to crop a little closer / crop partial bicycles from the edge of your picture.

I imagine, given they own the copyright, they are loathe to part with high res files.

If you want to print them & hang them on the wall it's not so bad. People aren't going to be standing up so close that their noses leave smudges.  I've had pics that were 3600 px across blown up to 90 cm to hang and they look fine.  2464 px width should yield a perfectly viewable 60 cm or more.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

6 megapixels will easily blow up to A3 with little to no visible artefacts.

At the controls I saw what looked like official (non maindru ) photographers - does anyone have any other links to share

I'd guess those are from local news outlets, or working for the local council equivalent.

Considering I didn't have my front number-plate on, I'm pleased they got (and IDed) such a good shot of me riding sans casque. Quite Pantani-esque, if I do say so myself ...
