I know they're nasty and mean to the good old red squirrel, but they're still cute....

See, compare the two sets of pictures....

Red = cute
Grey = vermin

Chances are you won't see any reds in Embra, they are far too timid, and too rare.

Maybe they are low flying squirrels on IoW?

In my yoof you could get five bob or something for a grey squirrel tail, as a reward from The Man for exterminating vermin. Is that still the case?

They had excellent squizzles in Canada, we watched one collecting large mushrooms from the forest floor and taking them to the top of a pine tree for his/her larder.

Our larger cat Josh spent one summer trying to catch the local grey squirrel.  Finally he must have cornered it, because we heard the most awful noise and saw the squirrel pursuing Josh, who ran for his life.  Josh then jumped onto the garden wall to escape, but the squirrel came up the nearest tree and carried on jabbering away at him.

Josh doesn't take any interest in squirrels now.

Once, whilst living in Leeds I heard an almighty noise coming from outside.  I went out on to the balcony and looked over towards the bins, where I saw a squirrel and a crow toe to toe on top of the fence.  Obviously the squiggel was the better of the pugulists, having arms and all, the crow deciding discretion was the better part of valour flew off after having taken a few punches from said verminous boxer :)

From the Berwickshire News:

"The Forestry Committee introduced a reward of 2.5p per tail in 1932 but the scheme was abandoned in 1957 because of abuse."

I bet those thrifty Scots were breeding the things as a cash crop.

Our cats used to regularly catch squirrels, I think they were working together. One hid up a tree, the other drove the squirrel towards the tree and waiting jaws/claws.

Now we are down to one cat, he only catches the occasional squirrel. Don't know how the little sod does it. He also goes swimming in the river to catch moorhens, ffs.
