Title: Sandwich and Fish & Chip Tour of Kent - Sat. 12th September
Post by: Adam on 28 July, 2009, 12:49:43 pm
Seeing as

a) I'm 50% Kentish, as my mum was born in Dover
b) I like the seaside
c) We missed out on Fish & Chips on the last expedition to Kent

I was thinking about another trip to the Garden of England, but this time cheat a bit and get the train out there.   Seeing as quite a few people have been to Whitstable, courtesy of the FNRttC, but not gone any further into deepest Kent, I figured that would be a good place to start.

Get the 09.03 from London Victoria to Whitstable, then head out across to Sandwich, and then up the coast to Ramsgate, and then basically cycle along the sea wall all the way around the sea coast through Broadstairs, Margate to Reculver just outside Herne Bay and then pootle back to the station at Whitstable.

The intention being to find a nice place for fish & chips somewhere around Broadstairs.

50 or so fairly easy miles with about 1,000 ft of climbing.  The mileage may increase a bit, if I spot there's something interesting to look at slightly off route - like a plane.  ;)

The more astute amongst you will realise that to a large extent this mirrors the ride posted in the latest issue of the CTC magazine!

This will be a social ride (think CTC but without the sandals*) at an easy pace, no-one left behind (unless they eat all the ice-cream), etc etc.

This will also be listed on CC.

Any takers?

* I'm not stopping you wearing sandals if you want to, of course.

Edit - changed start point to add a few more miles.

Count me in  I love the Viking Trail. Last time we stopped in Broadstairs it was extremely quickly, any chance for afternoon tea and cake by that stage?  :)

Well, I was thinking of around there for lunch in fact!  With the route, it would be after 26 miles or so.  We could of course have fish & chips followed by cake.   8)

However, we'll see how we go.

I'm quite interested in this. Sounds like a sensible alternative to the Cheam & Morden Hilly (postponed from icy February).

I want to do this ride but logistically it's quite difficult, what with the WARTY being the following day and all. I'll work out what the trains are doing.

The direct rail website says it's bus from Sittingbourne to Whitstable that day?

(Don't know what I was thinking- 3 changes and a cross-London journey??)

National Rail doesn't... clicky (http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/en/pj/jddc#751047411). That doesn't mean that there won't be, of course.

I reckon 7.20 from Southend Central to Grays, ask the nice man to take me over the bridge, then get to Dartford in time for the 9.04 and change at Gillingham to get on the same train that everyone else is on - assuming that it's not buggered by bus services.

No such info on National Rail (http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/) ??? ??? ???

In my experience it's unusual for SouthEastern to do maintenance on a Saturday.
Sunday? Yes, but not usually on a Saturday.

Anyways - Sittingbourne to Herne Bay is a lovely ride    :demon:

Likely route is here. (http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php?id=17422)

56 miles, and only 1,600 ft of climbing & descending, to a maximum altitude of 269 ft!!  So if you want to go up & down insanely steep hills, the Cheam & Morden Surrey Hills ride would be better suited for you, but if you want a casual pootle, this will be your cup of tea.  I'll even promise to try and stay off the big ring!

I'll be doing a recce ride this weekend, either Saturday or Sunday, although I may ride out from London and do lots of miles, if anyone is mad enough to join me!  I'll also be going over the route from Whitstable immediately following the FNrttC on Saturday 5th September ( I don't think anyone will be mad enough for that though)!

Edit - updated list and info.

If it's Sunday, I might  be available to join you.
However, I'm likely to have stuff to attend to first thing - so it may be a case of catching a train and RV'ing with you.

Sunday will be fine.

Have a look at the train timetables, and work out an arrival time/place along the FNRttC route that's convenient for you, and then I can sort out a departure time from London to link in with that.

Adam,
if you're planning on riding from London (Cutty Sark Gardens departure?) and then doing the 'Fish n' Chips' ride, it'd make sense for me to intercept you somewhere en route.
Rather than you try to accommodate me.

No?

Give me an idea of where and when you'll be departing from and I'll work it out from there, so as we meet.

Okly dokly.

Assuming I get up early enough, I'll be rolling past Cutty Sark Gardens around 8.00, then up to Blackheath to have a look at the Climate Camp, then for a change, Shooters Hill and A207 across to Dartford, then the usual FNRttC route so going through Rochester ETA 09.45, Sittingbourne ETA 10.30, arriving at Whitstable around 11.30 or so, to then go over the proper Fish & Chip route.

So have a look at what South Eastern trains link in with that sort of timetable, and give me a call en route to let me know what station you'll come into.  8)

On my recce ride yesterday, I cut the corner avoiding Ramsgate, so the full food review will have to wait until next week.

The amended route is here (http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php?id=17422).

After leaving Whitstable, the route goes on the Crab & Winkle path to Canterbury.  This is gravel (with a paved bridge over the A299), although in places it's a bit rocky.  However it's fine on 23mm tyres.  It drops down into Canterbury through the cycle path across the University, then we pick up another cycle path across to Fordwich.  This has a good surface although it's a bit narrow but I spent some time yesterday moving away brambles & nettles.  Then it's back on the roads again all the way to Sandwich, and then we go next to the A256 on the Viking Trail which is all pavement at that point, up to Ramsgate for a spot of lunch.  The route then basically follows the sea wall all the way around the coast back to Reculver, although at times it leaps back onto the coast road.

The sea wall is concrete blocks so a good surface, although in places the joints in blocks gets a bit tedious with the "thuds"!  Also when it goes past beach huts there are no cycling boards, so we may have to be careful on those stretches.

On the bit between Birchington and Reculver it's completely desolate but we'll also get to see the point where Thanet was orginally an island separate from the rest of Kent.  In Reculver we'll have a look at their ruined church, and then it's on the roads to Herne Hill and then back on the sea wall to Whitstable.

57.5 miles in total.  One big hill with some minor inclines and lots of water (hopefully in the sea).

Edit - weather update.

Weather currently looking rather good.  A ridge of high pressure sitting on top, sunshine, hot, with a gentle (yes gentle) north-westerly wind of 10 mph.

Edit - wind a bit stronger at 15 mph and now from the north-east, but still manageble going along the sea front.

What I really like about those "No cycling" areas is that there is a 5 m.p.h. limit for bloody cars!

I routinely ignore the ones (quite a few) depicting a cycle within a circle which is then crossed with a diagonal line, and will continue to do so until such time as this sign appears in The Highway Code  :D

That's what I did yesterday on the recce.  :smug:

In fact at one point which had No Cycling boards up, there was also a very weathered max 5 mph warning to cyclists painted on the concrete.  ???

Last Sunday there was one point, Westgate I think, where cycling is marked on the ground as being permitted. A beach-hut occupant, who had seen fit to extend his territory by a considerable margin across the promenade, asked me if I could walk. I informed him that I could from the discomfort of my saddle.

Update.

There'll be a slight substitution to now go on some extra road in Canterbury, as the cycle path through the University is a) rather narrow in places, b) has some tricky barriers at the south end and c) they were still building across the start bit by the offices, meaning we'd have to move some big barriers to get across.

Meet inside Victoria Station at around 8.45?

(and the weather will still be lovely).

I'm still up for the ride, just checking trains again. It would appear that the fare between Southend Central and Grays has gone up since Saturday. I paid £3.95 then for a day return. Now it's £4.20. >:(

I'm aiming to get a train from Dartford and to join your train from Rochester to Whitstable. Trouble is I've got to find my way to Dartford stn. I could do Stone Crossing again but the Dartford train leaves 12 minutes later.

So, it's 7.20 from Southend, arrives Grays 7.54.

Ride 2 miles to crossing control, get a lift across.

Ride 2 miles to Dartford station then:

9.04 to Rochester (9.31)
9.43 to Whitstable (you should all be on it!).

Another fine and well planned ride from Adam

Good company in slightly grey weather departed from Vista Belle.

Weather improved but pointy things in road did not......

Pippa suffered a brace of deflations in Canterbury Uni's campus.

Those fixed, we repaired to Preston for CAKE! Nom!

Kentish lanes took us (nearly) to the coast at Sandwich.

Then grunty headwind >:(

Then Chish and Fips in Ramsgate - more nom!

Ice cream from the Italian parlour in Broadstairs.

Margate and the sight of a sandy shore saw several individuals enter the sea - some in cozzies, some not  :D

Pippa and your humble correspondent left them to their splashing and made for Herne Bay to visit friends.

That done, we elected to catch a train home, and lo (and behold) who should join it in Whitstable?  But 5 cyclists who were last seen floundering  ;) on Margate beach.

A great day out, thanks all

Just got back, pretty tired, will write something up in due course (and add photographs).

Weird to be cycling past where James was theoretically sailing, not that we saw him.

Top chips and almost a whole large bar of dairy milk when I got to my friend's in the evening made it a good food day!

What a wonderful ride today - the last chance to experience an almost summer ride, with great company, beautiful orchards full of fruit, magnificent sea and CAKE, scampi (which was gorgeous) and at Whitstable station Wow and I had chinese takeaway and beer  :D

The swim in Margate was invigorating, and it was lovely to bump into Jurek and PippaG on the train going back!

Diolch yn fawr Adam

Seeing as all the above are cycling round avoiding unexploded bombs on Foulness, that leaves me free to post!

As everyone else was getting on further along the line, I got on the train at Victoria, enabling me to pass the secret location of the bike carriage to Jurek, so at Bromley Jurek, Pippa, Katie, Jane and Paul were all lined up right next to the doors.  After putting bikes in various places, Wowbagger then got on at Rochester and Auntie Helen was waiting at Whitstable, meaning there were eight of us.

We quickly left Whitstable and hopped onto the Crab & Winkle trail to Canterbury.

Sadly whilst going past the University, thanks to these guys

Pippa suffered a soft & squidgy effect in her rear tyre which after fixing, due to over enthusiastic pumping then resulted in a snapped valve meaning Jurek had to use a second inner tube to get her on the road again.

Whilst zooming down St Stephens Hill my computer logged 71 mph somehow which seemed a little excessive, even for me, but the rest of the ride being fairly flat passed with a more normal speed range.

Due to the delay caused by the puncture, we were getting a bit peckish, so we stopped off at the garden centre in the little village of Preston for cake.

we then went through the ancient town of Sandwich to pick up the cycle path along the A256, to have a look at the replica Viking boat showing the site when the Vikings first landed in AD449

(lots of history on this ride)

After a very nice fish & chip stop in Ramsgate

we then rolled along the coast

to stop for ice cream in Broadstairs.

Once we rounded the tip of Kent at North Foreland, we had the wind behind us, which was nice, so in Margate, we stopped to allow Jane & Katie (and Wowbagger once he'd got changed) to go for a swim.

I'm assuming you've checked the water quality...........

Going along the sea wall after Margate there were a few places where the water was splashing over the edge but on the stretch to Reculver the sea calmed down and on the final stretch back to Whitstable we just admired the views as the sun went down.

We'd just missed a train, so after saying goodbye to Helen, sadly we had nearly an hour to wait for the next train, so Wowbagger & Katie obtained a few essentials from the takeaway and off-licence.

Another fun day out, so thanks everyone for coming along.  Sadly, I've got a feeling it might be the last day out in shorts for me for this year.

It's very British to complain about the weather, and 2009 seems to have elicited quite a few moans from YACFers, but I'm going to mount a stout defence. I've done loads of miles this year and seldom have I needed to don a waterproof. Indeed, most of my riding has been in glorious sunshine and Adam picked yet another beautiful day for our trip around the Kent coast.

My day started early and I was out of the house around 7 and on the train to Grays soon after. The ride to the Thames crossing control, the crossing itself and the ride to Dartford station gave me plenty of time for a large coffee and an even larger Danish pastry before joining my second train. That took me to Rochester, where for the first time I noticed a dead submarine parked in the Medway. I found a secluded bit of Rochester station on which to practice a little tai chi before the train with everyone else on rolled in. We arrived in Whitstable to time and greeted Auntie Helen, who had driven down.

We took the Crab & Winkle Way, an off-road but not-too-rough path to Canterbury. It was pleasant and wooded and gave an early opportunity for innuendo when there was a sign telling us about a "Winkle Link". Soon we found ourselves amongst Canterbury's answer to Oxford's Dreaming Spires where there were some lumberjacks and they seemed OK. Pippa's tyre deflated, presumably as a result of their work and after a not inconsiderable battle to persuade her Continental tyre to go back on the rim, Jurek's pumping technique caused a deal of hilarity. He did seem to get a little carried away and just when we thought he was about to finish, there was a hiss as the valve snapped and another tube had to be found. After another battle to get the tyre off I produced my Special Thingy for getting difficult tyres back on. Jane said that she had one of those but didn't know how to use it so I demonstrated, much to her satisfaction. Once the tyre was seated, Jurek seemed unable to reproduce the turgidity of his first attempt so I took over with my rather longer one and in a few rapid strokes Pippa seemed satisfied too. Her puncture mended, we carried on.

We almost flew into Canterbury, down St. Stephen's hill, and my computer recorded just over 37 mph, one of my highest ever speeds on a solo machine. Soon we found the off-road section into Fordwich and then, after we climbed out of the Stour valley we had a lover ride along a ridge all the way into Preston with its tea room and wonderful cake. For me, it was carrot & ginger.

Refreshed, we made for Sandwich and tackled the headwind as we headed north-east. The sea was a beautiful blue but try as we might we couldn't pick out Uncle James's catamaran. He was making or Ramsgate and although we got there first, he had had a very rapid journey and was off North Foreland.

The chip shop was visited and as we were getting ready to leave a boy on an electric-powered skateboard entertained us for a while. Then it was more slog into the wind.

Once we rounded Kent's top right-hand corner the wind was our friend and we had a very fine ride into Whitstable. Jane, Her Welshness and I had a most enjoyable dip on Margate beach in which, unusually, I was the only one kitted out in regulation swimming costume. I think the waves were probably bigger than any I had previously experienced on the east coast. We left the promenade and a couple of hills might have been faster than St. Stephen's but for an occasional bend or inconveniently placed car.

On reaching the station it became clear that the homeward journey was going to be a bit of a slog. However, it allowed Her Welshness and me to load a few post-ride calories in the form of chow mein and beer. Three trains and a Tunnel Patrol vehicle ride later, I eventually arrived home at a quarter to midnight.
