What is your favourite ketchup?
« on: 29 May, 2021, 11:53:16 pm »
Not a particular ketchup fan, but when younger ,was a fan of daddies tomato ketchup.  Not sure fan is the right term as that what we had.  Then recently I fancied some ketchup and fancied trying Daddies but could not find it in the usual supermarkets, seemingly out of stock even for online purchase.

Then I found out that Daddies and hienz are both made by the same manufacturer in the same factory in the netherlands.  Then looking at blind taste tests seems like the bigest sellers aren't the best tasting, with that accolade going to shops own brands.

So do you have a favourite ketchup?

All Gold Tamatiesous, followed by Aldi's own brand.

Basically, the higher the tomato:vinegar ratio the better.  Reduced sugar ones can score well in this respect, if you can tolerate the aspartame.

Looking at the ketchup discussion, seems that the ones made from real tomato and not from concentrate score better.  Then where the vinegar is from, wine/cider vinegars score well.

Or am I over thinking this?

EDIT As a note the recent purchase of some japanese hienz ketchup was the first I had bought in at least a a year before lockdown, and the bottle that was finised was two years pasted the useby/sellby/bestbefore date

Yes it is the same but some will argue that it is different.

Now banana ketchup or banana sauce ;)

I've always stuck to Heinz, aside from some truly awful "Kosher for Passover' concoctions mandated in the Orthodox Jewish household of my childhood.
I'm boring.

Heinz or Daddies either will do. As soon as you start going posh they stop tasting like ketchup and own brand ones are a bit meh. There inst a big enough cost difference given the small amount we get through to make the cost differential worth while. We only really use it on burgers or fish and chips.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Has anyone tried making their own?

I'm kind of tempted, as I'm finding the vinegary-ness of Heinz more of an issue nowadays.
