Duck lips.
« on: 04 January, 2022, 02:33:46 pm »
I was just in the chemists picking up some meds for my brother Pedaldog. In front of me were two young women with eyelashes that looked like they had glued brush type draught excluders on
They had both had so much filler injected into their lips that they would have shocked Donald duck.
What I would like to know is are there any men who actually find this attractive ?

The general answer to "Are there men who find X attractive?" is "Yes".  It's a corollary to Rule 34.

I remain sceptical that most people who wear such make-up are doing so with the purpose of attracting men, though.  I think it's often more about conforming to [perceived] social expectations.  At least this seems to be why my SIL is in the habit of dying herself fluorescent ORANGE.  (She already has a man.  He's a bit crap, but she doesn't show any signs of wanting another one.  On the other hand, previous experiments with hair colour suggest that her self-esteem suffers if she isn't sexually harassed by random strangers on a sufficiently regular basis.)

Not really.

I knew someone who had filler work done.

Well, I knew them before and after. Meeting them 'after' I'm sure I failed to restrain the shock from my face.

In their case, I know, ludicrously, it was part of other work done to 'maintain their attractiveness'.

Oh, I was thinking of hot lips: https://www.campingworld.co.uk/en/gb/Snow-Peak--Hotlips/m-31908.aspx

So was I

And the answer is yes, these outward body modifications are part of their identity, forged around reality TV and a far too early exposure to porn.

You're watching the wrong porn, Ham. That's duck porn and very, very wrong. Get out of those pond-side bushes before someone calls the police.

It seems to stem from those bizarrely popular reality TV programmes. I saw a brief clip of the Essex one and was, erm, why?

Still, if it makes them happy, I'm going to stick with being judgemental about tattoos.

Tales of the riverbank? How Hammy gets his oats? Don't get ratty because you didn't star.

The reality TV didn't come into existence out of a vacuum, it amplified what was already there by adding a massive feedback loop. The initial impetus comes from the desire to be other than, the influx of the nouveua riche into areas like Chigwell with more money than taste and the growing ascendency of Teh Interwebs and social networks.

I can't help thinking that the 'full Essex' approach to makeup is less scary than the insidious USAnian expectation that normal people should wear it at all times.

Why not women?

Personally I don't, but I don't find fat people attractive either. Or smokers. Or people who eat with their mouth open. I don't find other men attractive either.

I don't think trout-pouted fat open-mouthed eating women smokers  or men would particularly care what I think and I don't want them to either, any more that I care that they aren't interested in me because I'm a paunchy, balding, cynical middle-aged man.

Why is it insidious - wearing make-up is no more or less than not wearing make-up, choosing the clothes you wear, whether to shave any body part or not, and the thousand and one other things we do to define ourselves. They're all choices in how we express ourselves.

What makes you believe that is not the "full Essex"?

Why not women?

It's complicated and without making sweeping characterisations of the individuals, the Essex Gurl meme carries with it, sadly, strong overtones of homophobia.

From my perspective (as a close observer) the insidiousness arises because of the way that it is done to be part of the herd, not as self expression. No small blemish is allowed, every body part is measured against what is seen to be the ideal.

It becomes insidious when it's an expectation (that you have to meet in the workplace, say) rather than a choice.

IMHO it is much worse when it is an expectation at school and as a teen.

That too.  But then, all sorts of social expectations are horrendous when you're a teen.  The best part of being an adult is not having to comply with them.

Or not "not having to comply with them" but "realizing you don't have to comply with them". Or perhaps more precisely, "realizing you don't care about complying with them and you don't care about the disapproval of those who think you should".

How about "being free to find a way to exist where the approval of those who care about your compliance no longer matters".  The problem with school, specifically, is that you're pretty much stuck there, so it doesn't matter how much the social expectations are bollocks in an objective sense.  As an adult - unless you're in prison or the military or something - you can pretty much always walk away.

Being stuck there is a big factor but I don't think it's actually the nub of it. After all, most of us are pretty much stuck with colleagues and neighbours too. Two things happen though: you stop being bothered about approval of people you don't care about; and they stop being bothered that you don't meet their approval.

All humans are tribal so of course, they try to achieve this by matching the expectations of their peers, whether that's beardy middle-class blokes in chinos, tattooed hipsters in their rollups, or dungareed lesbians with stern fringes. The uncanny valley doll-look might be an extreme, but isn't there a bit of an assumption that we aren't capable of making our own choices. How we appear is a key part of our identity and we all put effort into it, conscious or unconscious. Not wearing make-up, choosing to shave or not – and further into how we present ourselves, how we communicate, who we choose to socialize with and how we socialize – are still choices we're making and we continue to make those choices throughout our lives, though school is obviously where we first face them, and where they are most pernicious. But if a grown woman chooses how she wants to look, I'm a bit discomfited to criticise because she doesn't meet with my expectations of her appearance.

That said, anyone who doesn't like freckles can go throw themselves at a tiger right now.
