While I'm here: I saw a sign for CO-VID testing the other day... (is that spelling or punctuation?)

Not really cringe, but smile....
From the event notes for an audax I have entered.... "take a lateral flow test at home the evening before to ensure you are not asymptotic"
I suspect auto-carrot is involved.

Or an incorrectly formed Roman numeral?

My son's watching a video prospectus from Cardiff Met university. They're boasting that they've given scholarships to students from "Ukrane".

I think you will find that the Russians had a purge of unnecessary vowels in 1937.

As the Iron Lady might have said to the Man of Steel, "Ukraine if you want to...".

PS - is there a Welsh spelling of Ukraine? I would have expected something like Oocraen.

PPS - Wcrain. Of course.

Well, for a 26" frame - or 24" with a saddlebag high up - Sheffield racks are, er, useless.
2x4: thick plank; 4x4: 2 of 'em.

Seeing fboab's (correctly spelled) post about The Galloway Hoard downstairs reminds me that there is an increasing confusion of “hoard” and “horde”.  Pirate hoards, for example, be the Stuffs stolen by Pirate hordes and subsequently not found on desert islands.  Yarrrrr and, moreover, shiver me timbers!

Real spelling makes spellchecker cringe - and I don't mean just English/American misusage. On my works computer, it regularly queries "Rochdale".  I work for ..... Rochdale.  I don't know whether or not it thinks we don't deserve a capital letter or whether we should just keep it quiet, or what.  Oddly, it doesn't query "spellchecker", which wasn't a word at all until microsoft (?) invented it.

I have a Facebook friend who tried posting a Nativity scene recently.

Autocorrect kept changing his caption to 'manager'...

Autocorrect is a devil but spellcheckers, if treated with a modicum of common sense, are very useful.

Peter, can you not add Rochdale to your spellchecker's user-defined dictionary, or whatever it calls it?

Agree with your sentiments, stranger!  Yes, I'm sure I could sort it out but it gives me something to talk about!  What really is irritating is the way the council's algorithms prevent me looking at things it deems to contain pornography or terrorism-related material, possibly because there is a p in pancreas and pornography and a b in bike and bomb!  I'd expect it to get uppity if I typed in Rogerzilla but I've not tried it!  Am on non-stroppy muchine, just now!

Known as the Scunthorpe Problem (for obvious reasons), it's the sort of thing you expect from lowest-bidder filtering software beloved of over-cautious public sector organisations who waste little time considering how such systems may impede the getting done of useful work.

Since developers who understand how to parse Unicode cost money, you should be able to work around it by writing all your rude words in emoji...   ;)

(As for spillchuckers not knowing 'Rochdale', this is simply because nobody at Microsoft has ever been to Rochdale.)

At my last job, the filth filtering software refused to allow me to email photos of boilers that I'd taken on my phone, to the office email.  The IT section got quite arsey with me when I put in a formal request for them to sort it, but when I took to regularly taking pics of every boiler I saw, whether I needed to or not, then asking them to release each one, they eventually changed their tune.  Initially they were extremely reluctant to even release them, I had to get my manager to point out to them that it was part of my job, just as it was apparently part of theirs to do their utmost to obstruct the business of the local authority.  Pictures of cats were apparently OK, though!

Saw that the other day and meant to take a picture for this thread or the grammar one, but then realised on my way back to London that I'd got no further than good intentions. Ah well, it doesn't really need to be immortalised more than once.
