Don't Look Up. As said, it's a sort of satire that tries to dance in size ten platform boots, not exactly a vehicle of subtle, razor-sharp wit. Also far too long and spent much of that running time hammering the obvious points over and over. On the other side, in the wake of a dismal COP26 where we agreed and made binding commitments to not give a shit, it's terrifyingly on point.

With a far sharper script and a 90-minute running time, it could have been brilliant and terrifying.

Most of MrsT's FB running group are American, and most of them didn't notice the satire or even link the film to climate change. Meanwhile they are yammering on about how they're going to do N marathons in M countries this year.  One pair last year did one at Machu Picchu "before it's spoilt".

Yes; for a while I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be a satire of COVID-19, before it became more obviously about climate change.  I wouldn't be surprised that people missed it entirely.

I don't think Netflix have editors on the payroll.

Mark Rylance as proto-Jobs was the standout character for me, but then I'd turn up to hear him read through a telephone directory.

I think it was aimed at a fairly un observant, US, audience, as opposed to you poxy left wing elite types.  Like most films, unfortunately.

Fair.

(He almost saved that odd spy court drama a couple of years back. Can't be arsed to google it, a 6/10 film I'd say ...)

1987 The Fourth Protocol where Michael Caine saves East Anglia from Peirce Brosnan
A comforting old style spy story where the bad guys are bad, and the good guy is sweary Michael Caine.

But did you make sure to watch The Hitman's Bodyguard first?

Not sure it it would have helped with adding more drivel or ...

The Gentlemen, on Netflix.

A Guy Ritchie film that I had seen before. Not too bad actually, even though I know its fashionable to hate Ritchie. Hugh Grant is great as a creepy lechy private investigator.

Actually thought HmsBdg was not too bad/ watchable.  Gary Oldman's good value.  Wondering if RR has any decent non-wisecracker roles.

I watched Don't Look Up the day before yesterday. Frankly, it wasn't funny and I don't think it made its point strongly enough. There were one or two good performances, but I never felt that the film really got its teeth into the absurdity of modern - particularly US - life in a way that would penetrate the skulls of those who don't yet get it. There's no point in ridiculing the idiots if they don't get that they're being ridiculed.

I have already seen people on FB that I know who have fallen into the cults trap state that it's brilliant...

Ready Player One while I did basic but slow computer fixin.

I'm not sure who the film is aimed at - too many 90s references for kids, but too much digital animation for anyone from the 90s I would have thought.  Prob too grown up for young kids but too simple for older kids.

With a bit of thought I think that they were aiming at a Pixar/Muppets sort of film that could be enjoyed in a different way by adults and kids; but the kids need to be that little bit older so I expect that they will be confused by all the references they don't get and the movie is too jarry for adults to watch it for the in jokes.

"After Love"
BFI Player
Great, suspenseful, poignant. Would thoroughly recommend. But does it pass the Bechdel test?

"Boiling Point"
Prime Video
Expensive, but judged worth it in our household at least. Is Stephen Graham ubiquitous because he's good? Didn't even notice the one-take, look no cuts jive...

I watched Under Siege last night.

I've seen it before and it was just as good this time!
It is simpler than it looks.

Safety to Nome on prime. Fatbiking the Iditarod- stunning photography captures the scenery, isolation and endurance really well.   What an adventure !

A bit more like "The Age of Stupid" perhaps? A bit dated now - it was made in 2009, but sobering.

I quite enjoyed it, but I'm willing to suspend a lot of my disbelief for a simple storyline where the main characters in the film have a happy ending. :)

I'm also a big kid, who watches a lot of films as pure escapism. ;D
Actually, it is rocket science.

Starship Troopers (1997)

I just watched this again, after watching a YouTube video by "Knowing Better", and I was curious to see it once more, and compare it to my memories if the last time I read the book (which I probably need to do again too!)

It's a curious film. Initially it is very clearly aimed at the teen US audience with the main characters being jocks and the popular people at a USA type school. After that, it becomes a much more space battle type of film, probably playing on the era of many shoot-em-up science fiction films, that started with Star Wars. What I find particularly weird is that whilst Paul Verhoeven, and others involved in it, state quite clearly that it's anti-fascist, the characters and the storyline pretty much say that their culture actually works. Whilst plenty of people die, ultimately it's all "for the greater good", and the film ends with all of the warrior types, and even the 'faux SS' with Neil Patrick Harris, having demonstrated that they were in the right, and all their justifications are valid.

It's rather hard to see how this is meant to show fascism as being bad, when it appears to demonstrate the exact opposite. I find it a little uncomfortable to watch, although the cinematography and relatively early CGI special effects are more impressive.

I've never seen any of the sequels, so wonder in which direction they go. I suspect they're just more shooting baddies and succeeding, rather than any better or further consideration of the background culture.
Actually, it is rocket science.

I'm with you Tim. Total failure of tone. What a terrible contrast with his brilliant RoboCop (10 years earlier).

What an amazingly erratic director: Basic Instinct, Total Recall, then Showgirls - which is pure hetero soft-porn, with no saving graces.

I've only ever seen Neil Patrick Harris playing "Neil Patrick Harris" in the Harold & Kumar films.
