There are REASONS why Mel Kirkland, son of an optician, has HUGE lenses...

My optician chain tells me their lens maker will not allow the near sight segment to be lower than 12mm in height, base of frame to top of segment, as they say that "you will not be able to see through it."

Weird way of putting it, because the important bit is the height relative to your pupil. If you measure from the frame, the positioning will be affected by frame size and shape.

My current specs have large, nearly round lenses. If the reading bit was only 12mm high, I wouldn't be able to read through it and trying to do so would severely strain my eyes (not to mention I'd either have to tilt my head back until it was horizontal, or hold the reading material under my chin).

Sprogs had an idea, a year or so back. She wanted bifocals to be easier for reading music. She went into Specsavers and told them the height of lower lenses and they obliged, no problem.

I just collected my new spectagoggles.
Apparently my eyes have improved a little and these new pair, bi-focal and transition, mean I can get away with wearing them to look at the monitor and write without changing to a near vision lens or adjusting my posture.  8)

Since we don't actually have a medical rant thread, I'll just mutter "bitey beastie bastards" here.

If anyone needs me, I'll be in the corner with the antihistamine dozies, waiting for my arms to return to being the same size.

The joys of camping ? I’ve had a few bites myself in the last week.

Yeah, after a couple of years of not camping I hadn't missed that part; I've had to get my midge bites vicariously by following Notsototalnewbie's tweets.

Though I suspect this was something nastier than a midge.  The reference midge-bites on assorted other parts of my body remain merely itchy, where this one caused me to wake up at 3am with my right hand feeling non-specifically funny.  Then, in the time it took to find my torch, I proceeded to wondering why my lower arm looked like it belonged to Popeye...

Blood sugar 179 mg/dl this morning despite cycling & frugal diet. ???  Turned out the pharmacy had given me Rennies with sugar in instead of my usual sugar-free ones. I've been using them against nocturnal acid reflux for the last week with nary a thought that they might not be sugar-free. Bugger.

Some enterprising beastie has helpfully taken my mind off the arm by biting me on the sole of the foot last night.  Fucksake.

Good call.  I remember shooing something that looked a bit like that away when it landed on my other arm.

Worst bite I had from one of those things ended up with the entire calf red & swollen and a course of antibiotics.

They sound quite gnasty. Maybe even knasty. Anyway, "3. Avoid swarms of insects" seems like rather good advice no matter what sort of insects they are.

And one of the best treatments for such bites used to be Solarcaine, until the nanny state took the (lido)caine out of it and substituted Aloe Vera  >:( >:(.

Ugh!  Mine seems to have cleared up now, and is less itchy than the midge bites.

I've been trying to ignore it and hoping it will go away, on the basis it might be viral labyrinthitis or similar.

This strategy was working quite well until I woke up at 6am with horrendous tinnitus (high pitched whistling edition) in my left ear, and a sensation unpleasantly like being drunk.  Over about half an hour or so the tinnitus spread to the right ear, but less loud.

It's showing no signs of abating, but the associated hearing loss appears to be purely conductive, and my eardrums are throbbing and squelching, so I'm going with the snot theory on this one.

Didn't help that I had to go to Mr Sainsbury's Emporium to stock up on Toothy Comestibles, which has made me travelsick.

My mum got stung by a wasp on Sunday evening, She was woozy and not v happy Monday. Ex-GP stepdad was worried about her despite her taking a lot of antihistamine. Yesterday she contacted her GP, got a shitty email saying "take antihistamine" which she'd been doing and now it was infected looking and her arm doubled in size. She phoned and grr'ed at them and a GP phoned her back, Glaswegian like she is, so she liked him, he reviewed her pix and agreed antibiotics were probably a good idea. Hoping they kick in by tomorrow as she sounds rough.
