In the spirit of recommend what you ride: Singular Swift.

Comfortable for all day rides, agile and stable. Can be run as a single speed or, if you must, geared and the new frames will take + sized tyres I think.

It rather depends on what you want to do with it;  Lightweight XC race wippet bike? Towpath trundler? Slack-angled mid-life crisis bike?  ;)  And budget, of course.

The XTC is a good value do-it-all general purpose machine. Almost anything from the mainstream manufacturers in that price band will not disappoint.

In a similar vein to the previous recommendation, I've been very happy with my on-one 456 so would happily recommend the latest incarnation (I believe the Parkwood is a close equivalent in 29r flavour, if that's your thing...)

I ride a Trek Stache 29er in 17 1/2". A very nice ride and the current crop of Trek hardtails is worth a look. Budget from £400 up to the deposit for a house.
