Title: Significant places in Audax.
Post by: Exit Stage Left on 03 April, 2011, 12:42:06 pm: I wondered where the spirit of Audax is physically most concentrated. The centre of it all is the Brasserie, 'Au Pied de Cochon' in the Les Halles area of Paris. It's where the ACP Fleches start from. Boab would be delighted by the menu, the signature dish is pig's trotters and chips.

In Lancashire the epicentre of all cycling is the Priory cafe in Scorton CYCLISTS - THE PRIORY :: SCORTON :: RESTAURANT & TEA ROOMS :: STOUTS BAR :: ACCOMMODATION :: WEDDINGS :: BUSINESS FACILITIES (http://www.theprioryscorton.co.uk/cyclists_the_priory_scorton.php), but it's not open 24 hours, there's probably a 24 garage somewhere that gets the most visits from Audaxers.

Post by: Billy Weir on 03 April, 2011, 02:22:10 pm: Cafes? In the Southern counties it has to be a face off between the Tutti Pole in Hungerford and Friar Tuck in Amesbury. Both are used heavily, both for their location (both towns are passed by or through by many routes) and their fare.

EMLEY MOOR TOWER: Did you know that Emley Moor transmitter is the tallest free-standing building in the whole of the UK - higher than Blackpool Tower (left) or the Post Office Tower (centre)? No wonder you can see it from all over the county

You were lucky, I've repeatedly tried to use them as a control for my events - they've seldom been open, and when they were, a shortage of staff resulted in poor service. A pity, as I'd like to support local business where possible.

The good thing about Talybont-on-Usk is the village has two of the best PHs in that part of the universe - namely The Star, and The White Hart.

No, that's Holme Moss. Emley Moor is def. nearer Wakefield

They were originally twins, both steel lattice towers, but Emley Moor iced up and came down one cold day in 1969, & was replaced with a concrete structure.

I have to add the village hall in Ardgay, HQ for several years of Steve and Denise Carroll's brilliant rides round the northern highlands. Their events are now transferred to Portmahomack. I've not been yet, but hope to put that right at the end of this month. :thumbsup:

Ferrybridge power station, and the new(ish) A1/M62 interchange, are truly things of beauty. Especially at night.

I got a call from Ann (who does the bookings for dalmeny) about 3 weeks ago asking me if we were still going ahead with our event this weekend. I checked the auk calendar and pointed out that not only did I not have an event running this weekend but nobody else did either.

Like the restaurant that only wants you to phone to cancel your booking, it was very reassuring.

she also knew that 2011 was a PBP year. ;)

May I also nominate Ballachulish Village Hall - home of curtains and voddie?

Beattock Village Hall! I've never done PBP without doing Ower the Edge as well. I was most unimpressed by the ground- source heat pump system, I wonder if they investigated how much heat there is to be recovered from the ground in Beattock.

Non-control, significant Welsh Audax places which are significant to me:

- The bench at the top of the square in Usk.
- The stretch of road in front of Pen-y-Pas Youth Hostel.
- The grassy bank by a gate on a private lane off the A4085 between Garreg and Pont Aberglasyn, which I tend by watering on average twice a year, those two times coming about 5 or 6 hours apart.

That's quite a significant place for me, the red arrow is drawn right through my old house in Marple Bridge.

That's rather spooky.

Not sure why it's significant in Audaxing (except that it's a fair old honk to get out of Marple Bridge on a bike)

I've been to most of the Wales places mentioned.

The journey is more significant than any particular arrival. I vote for the Brecon A40 Bypass at 1am in May or late April

Thinking about this over lunch, I settled on Llandovery as a spot in the UK that I associate closely with audaxing. Or to be more specific, the bend in the road on the A road at the West End Cafe. There are essentially four highways to/away from there, each of which has special memories of the adventures I've had (and shared) in the past 6 years.

Similarly the T junction where you can go left into Marlborough high street or right towards the downs.

I made a quick stop on the M1 yesterday (as a passenger). My driver commented that these services were very cramped, had too short an entry-slip, yada yada ...

I was thinking how compact it was, with coffee, toilets, 3 types of food, all within a short walk. And comfy chairs in a little side-alcove. :thumbsup:

Must check out the non-Motorway entrances ...

It's one of the few services with no barriers on its non-motorway entrances. It's the unofficial M4 jn14.5, used by everyone in Lambourn.

I think so. I got a puncture halfway up Snake, and while I was mending it Sheila was fantasizing about doing something unrepeatable with a nearby sheep.

But my main memory is of Rikki Goode trying to stir his mug of coffee with two hands, and failing messily.

Hey, what a great day, a memory I'd forgotten - thanks for reminding me Mr. Frankie. I can still hear the spoon rattling ineffectually against the side of the "Tea"mug (I don't drink coffee). I can also remember all the motorists huddled selfishly around the fire blocking off all the heat whilst us cyclists continued freezing. Was dreading getting to the top of the Snake that day, had to stop several times on the way down to break up the ice in the gloves.

Anyhow I spotted that but really came here to inform of the following;

I know that Leigh Delamere services is special in Audax circles, I'd never realised though that it were such an important spiritual place for Mr. Salvatore, it being "The Centre of the Spooniverse".

Whorlton Bridge over the glorious Tees.

It's a fabulous and very old bridge, close to my ancestral home; I was two-thirds of the way round my first 400 (a solo DIY) and appear still to have been able to use the big ring. The bike (on which I started audaxing on one of Don Black's rides) has since been stolen but the memory never will be, except by the curse that steals all memories, in which case, I hope it will be one of the last!

Indeed, there is a patch of grass at Lockerley near where I live; when I'm passing it I often think of being sat there on a sunny afternoon many years ago enjoying tea and cake with ElS.
