I have a suspicion that Vaughan Williams named a hymn tune after Monk Street.

Close.

In actual fact he set Bunyan's hymn "Who would true valour see" to music using the traditional Sussex melody "Monk's Gate".

Real life will shortly be releasing me so I can get back on me bike.  The earliest opportunity for a spin next week is Thursday evening.  Huggy and I have discussed a spin around a couple of Maldon pubs (Royal Oak on Fambridge Road and the Quuen Vic on Spital Road).

Anyone fancy it?

Paging slipgate, fancy a spin on Thursday evening?

OD, what time's kickoff on the third? I fancy coming along. It's been a while since I've cycled that far, should be good fun!
BTW, reference the 3rd see over here, time yet to be decided but probably about 8am departure from Witham (maybe earlier when I'm corrected by OD  ::-) )

I thought Monksgate was a paedophile cover-up. :smug:

Yes, you are right and that's what I was thinking of.

Chief spotted  :o
Driving TCMT-H to work this morning we passed a gurning, orange clad, Chief who didn't appear to be enjoying his morning cycle-commute.  Nevermind, Chief, there must be more pleasant weather ahead in a few months  :-*

What time do you propose setting off from Witham on Thurs?

I am currently in negotiations with AH of this parish for a day ride on Thurs, but if that falls through I may well be interested in a certain amount of rail assistance if I may join you for some of your ride. I would imagine that you would be returning to Witham long after the last train has gone, so I would head either for Wickford, or straight home after Maldon.

I assume that you are considering an ascent of TMNH?

I will be coming at some point tonight, but probably not setting off at the same time as the rest of the Witham contingent.  hopefully I'll be in time to catch you up at the first pub.

I have the route (mental not to self - load said route into the GPS before tonight!)... If soembody with my number (OD or huggy) could text me if you leave the first pub before I get there then I'll know to head straight past and on to the second.

Cheers

I almost certainly won't be at Witham: I have a nasty suspicion that my beloved Rohloff (solo machine this time) might need to be going back for some repairs. It's been feeling rough most of the year and I spoke to Dave of Thorn this morning. Comparative fettling alongside Mrs. Wow's bike shows just how rough it feels. I may be on my single speed and I certainly don't want a repeat of Friday's ascent of TMNH* on it.

Which, pray, is the first pub on the agenda? I could ensconce myself in there at an appropriate moment and await your arrival. This will quite probably be rail-assisted to Wickford.

*Actually an ascent of TMWH as we crossed the river from Boreham, passed Little Baddow Church and ascended Colam Lane.

Hmm. Pub is about 15 miles from Wickford station. That means catching the 6.07 train, I reckon.
