What beer are you having for Christmas?
« on: 13 December, 2011, 03:34:47 pm »
I was pleased when the doorbell rang this morning at 7.30am just as I was about to go out my Christmas beer arrived

24 bottles Huyghe Delirium Tremens
24 bottles De Bie Helleketelbier
20 bottles Dortmunder Union Export

I considered buying Delirium Christmas but I find it heavy going. A bit like Delirium Nocturnum but more alcohol.

Edit: I should point out this will last me beyond Easter

Whatever ale is on special offer at Waitrose. At the moment it's looking pretty Black Sheepish.

I went to Tesco yesterday, as they have a special offer on lots of good beers at the moment & splashed out on lots of goodies, including St Peter's Stout, Marston's Pedigree VSOP, Fuller's ESB, Fuller's 1845 and other treats, including White Shield. Nothing under 5% and nearly all over 6%, hic!

I should have locked it all away in the garage, as the St Peter's Stout didn't make it through the evening.

I'm picking up a minipin (18 pints) of Mighty Oak Captain Bob on the 22nd, which should have settled perfectly for Christmas Eve/Christmas.

Last Xmas the guy I normally drink Leffe Brune with gave me a 3L bottle of Chimay Bleu. I haven't drunk it yet.
Must remedy that soon. Can't do it all by myself though.

That reminds me, must look in my local to see if they have any Copper Dragon.....

Ah Prosecco , normally I wouldn't even use the stuff to wash my wheels , but a couple of months ago we were in this fine establishment

and the proprietor offered us a couple of glasses buckshee. Churlish to refuse we thought. It was Terre Nardin Gold . We told him how much we liked it and he gave us a bottle.

What a guy.

I dare you to try Guinness Foreign Export. (But NOT the Nigerian version they used to have in Tesco)

Don't know yet but I'll call in at Bottle Shop and see what takes my fancy.

According to their current beer list, they have a few Christmas beers in, including Mikkeller's Santa's Little Helper (2009 Barrel Aged Red Wine Edition) - a mere 11% abv and £12.50 for a 33cl bottle. I reckon one of those might go very nicely with the Christmas pudding. The Goose Island 2009 Christmas Ale also sounds interesting and is a more modest 5% abv and £8.50 for a 660cl bottle.

Just been down to our local independent offy and got a case of Wall's County Brewery Gun Dog Bitter, due to the lack of Copper Dragon.

I thought I might pop in there until I saw their prices.

Ended up getting a load of Belgian stuff from BeerMerchants.

I thought I might pop in there until I saw their prices.

The "ordinary" beers are indeed more expensive than supermarket prices (eg Thornbridge Kipling is £3 compared to Waitrose £2.25, and London Pride is £3 compared to £1.75 in Tesco) but you can't really expect an independent to compete with supermarkets on price and I don't shop there for stuff I can get cheaper elsewhere (Tbh, I'm not sure why they even bother stocking London Pride). For me, the main reason to shop there is that they have some amazing beers that you just can't get anywhere else, not even Waitrose.

I'm off to the parent's, where I normally get fed vino, but I shall take a bottle or three of Fullers Vintage and/or Brewdog Hardcore to fill the gaps. I'll also have to check out the Abbeydale pub down the road to see if they've got any Last Rites on

I'll be going down to my local brewery, Great Western Brewery in Hambrook to purchase a few 2 litre bottles of their excellent ales.

We had Christmas dinner with my parents yesterday (since they'll be away next week). I took some Goose Island 2009 Christmas Ale along. Bloody good it was too. A full-bodied brown ale with spicy, nutty, citrussy flavours and warmingly alcoholic. Highly recommended.

I had decided not to buy any more beer but something snapped in my head and the Credit Card escaped from my bag and ordered some.

8 Delirium Christmas
4 Maredsous Blonde
4 Maredsous Tripple
8 De Bie Helleketelbier
24 De Bie Zatte Bie
24 Delirium Tremens

Should keep me going until after Easter.
