Blimey!  That's a really good reminder to not ignore these things and go to the doctor, even if you think you know what's wrong!

Absolutely.
I am a bad one for this with my, "I'll be OK" attitude.
My case was a bit special though. The normal warning for an abscess is pain and swelling. I never had the pain because mine was exceptionally deep. I was tired at first, which baffled the doctors. I had a real freaky one and it's almost always much more straight forward than what I had. No catheters or anything, just a quick, neat operation and you're done, just like a chap in the bed opposite me when I left.
I was hoping I'd get to see a doctor when I went to the chemist, but this crept up on me, with me thinking at first that I was just tired. I should have had pain and swelling from the very start which would have rung alarm bells for me. I never had that to go on, so thought I was pretty OK and didn't need a doctor, so had no appointment. The depth of my abscess was what caused my urination issues, the doctors had to work this out because it was unheard of. I really did have a freak.
I'm a tough guy anyway. So perhaps it's better that I had than a weaker man who may have come off much worse. I'll put it down to experience and be stronger from this. Hopefully wiser too.

If it was an abcess in the ischaeorectal fossa then be ware that in medical school we were told that it is one of the most painful conditions available and it is also very hard to get to.

Apparently its a pain in the ars* :)

For both the victim and the doctors and surgeons that sort this mess out. It certainly is. :)

Mine was caused by an ingrowing hair and I was advised to use depilatory cream on the area to prevent a reccurrence. I never got around to doing that and it never came back.

I'm certain that if my abscess was caused the same way, the doctor would know. My abscess even had the doctors puzzled for a while, due to it's oddities.

I'm sure you're right and I never had the tiredness that you describe, just a large lump on my arse that antibiotics wouldn't see off. After the op I had an anti-lump that Vernon had to clean and pack every day (he went a very pale shade of grey the first time he saw it!).

Keep it clean.

Reminded me of another thread...

Taking a four pint, plastic, milk jug so you can wee twice without leaving the tent. Bliss!   8)

You're going to need a bigger milk bottle than is usually available!

bloody hell.  How do i avoid getting an abscess?

Live in a bubble, never eat, pee or poo.

You can't. they're mostly bad luck.
[Edit] Avoiding getting 'run down' by infection, exhaustion or starvation may help.

Fucking Legend.

This story will be cut & pasted in years to come on many unrelated flora, like Agent Picolax and that one about the guy who shaved his arse.

Do you have to shave your arse now, to stop it reoccurring?

Eeeek, was that a pilonidal abscess? If so I've had one, size of a hens egg, took about 6 weeks to heal.

GWS.

That's not what I remember it being called, but it could be, I suppose. ???
I was just told that I had an abscess. I didn't really need to know the exact identification, I just needed it out. I left the clever stuff to those very clever doctors. :)

Sounds more like an ischio-rectal abscess to me. Pilonidal are relatively superficial and originate in a pit between the buttocks. Ischiorectal start in the rectum and fester in the tissues of the pelvis.

Thanks for the information Helly. I did wonder if I could prevent it again, but hopefully lightning will never strike twice.

Mike (everyone), again, I must say that mine was very odd. If you get pain in your bum and notice swelling, then see a doctor ASAP and you won't go through half what I did. I never had the pain and swelling from the very start.

Looks like you'lkl have to stay off Stick bikes for a while. Maybe a nice cushion on a Rec(T)umbent seat would be the way to keep the legs fit?

Ischiorectal are a problem because they inhabit a space in a fibrous area of the pelvis, which gives them no room to expand, hence the pain and the pressure.

Stand back when lancing, or get a trainee to do it  ;D ;D
It is simpler than it looks.
