Are you watching, or boycotting?

I'm watching, it's fantastic to see humans stretched to their limit.
I'm not, too much money, hypocrisy and homophobia.
Are they a popular beat combo?

any sane judge with any sense of 'sport'

That's a great definition of sport. Anything that requires a "judge" isn't a sport.

They may not be called that in short-track, I trusted Frankie. You do know it's not Figure Skating, don't you?  :P

Sport will always need someone to impose their opinion, or their reading of the rules. Otherwise you have warfare! [Or - much worse - online computer gaming.]

I look forward to counter-examples with interest, but I think they will be rare.

Some of the things they pass off as sport really are farcical.
What's that one where they have to continually brush the ice in front of the path of a puck which doesn't seem to affect it's trajectory one bit.
Where's the accessibility there? It's hardly the sort of thing kids are going to aspire to be good at. "I want to be a footballer!"
"I want to be a cycle racer!"
What do you want to do little Johnny? "I want to be an ice-brusher!"
Isn't it funny how people assume that because a sport isn't popular in England, it's rubbish and nobody must want to do it?

Isn't it funny how chippy Scots get when you suggest one of their minority sports (c.1% of scots actually curl) might not be popular and assume it's because the commenter is English ;)

"Winding up the Chippy Scots about their silly sports" I think it's called.

(Or What sports should be in the Olympics. Or something)

I don't have any problem with it being in the olympics. I like curling*. It is a skill game and deserves it's place. I was just amused by the knee-jerk anti-english reaction.

* I like bowls as well (btw, c.4% of Scots play bowls)

It's a minority sport, but that doesn't mean nobody wants to do it. And it's not the first time people here have assumed that the English view of a sport is definitive.

Could somebody please tell me what the English view of sport is? I would like to know what I should be thinking.

So basically I have nothing to celebrate since 2005 and there was me thinking we won the Ashes this winter.

Once we started winning The Ashes regularly it wasn't such a big thing...

Well that's that then - pretty good overall.    From a BBC POV Clare Balding was perhaps a tad 'over aired' though.

I think you'll find I'm arguing that the English view of a sport is absolutely not definitive.

So who does have the definitive view?!? You two sound pretty expert on this - noone else has claimed to have a definitive view of any sport.

Do all the English hold "the English view" on every sport?

Can we only comment on those sports more popular in our own nation?

Lots, the angle you corner at determines whether you glide effortlessly along and cross the line on two planks to rapturous applause or slide ignominously over the line on your arse.
