I've seen strange numbers on signs like that for years.  I always assumed that there had been a time when metrification seemed immanent, so the positions would be logical, while the numbers would be more sensible later.
They don't quite work out though.  (Unless they were using some very rough and ready conversion factor)
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

Or using the factor the wrong way round? Still doesn't seem to work out.

I assumed it was when there was something in the way around the 150 yds point, or a side entrance which would make the sign ambiguous or confusing.

So,
We need Ham to:
A)  Accurately measure 150 meters from the junction and see if the sign is anywhere near that.
B)  Accurately measure 150 yards from the junction and see if there is anything there that would make the position impracticable.

Attempting to find it, I found this:

http://goo.gl/maps/fXari

It is in the same area, with the same 142 yds.  But it is not the same sign (check the height versus the earth).  And moving this one 8 yards back would make it more visible.  The combination strongly suggests I am wrong.

One hundred and forty six yards and two feet would be the natural distance to mark, being 2/3 of a furlong.
