CUK Affiliate Membership no more.... alternatives

I've just got a renewal through from Cycling UK and they've done away with their affiliate membership because apparently everyone want the mag etc... I don't tbh
So it is now £40 for the first year (which includes a 20% discount)

So I am looking for recommendations for similar cover (preference for memberships that don't prescribe magic plastic hats) ??

I recall LCC might be an option, any others?

I've been with LCC for a couple of years. However I was going to look around at the next renewal ... something I read a while back made me question the level of cover compared to the likes of CUK.

Well unfortunately the decision has been made for me this year as I forgot it was on direct debit, but it is £10 less than LCC with the single year 20% disco, I'll put a reminder in to check out the options before the next renewal.

Thanks - that looks interesting, problem is it's not on the list for some of the 'approved insurances' for other events/clubs like The Fridays rides (BC, CUK & LCC) - not that I've been on one for a while.

Yeah - I was surprised to receive a mag a few weeks ago - I assumed it was because of the voting, but didn't make the connection that the membership had changed.  I spent less than 5 mins flicking through it and then it was consigned to a pile.  I was hoping it would be something to occupy my self with whilst I was been chauffeured for an hour to somewhere, but it wasn't to be...

If you are only after the third party insurance to cover you as an individual then look at a few commercial offerings.  I got a higher level of cover from a very well known if slightly annoying insurer for something like £12 a year / £1 per month.

One of the often missed benefits of the legal cover offered by Cycling UK and BC is the waiving of the success fee in the event of a personal injuries claim handled by their preferred solicitors.  If you're ever unfortunate enough to need that, it'll save you more than a lifetime's subscriptions. Affiliated CUK members didn't get it, LCC members don't, Clarion members get a reduced fee.  I don't know about Laka, it says you keep 100% of any compensation, though I'd want that clarified. I don't know of any others.

You can opt out of receiving it if you want to save the paper.  I don't think there's any savings to be made, I get the impression it's pretty much self funding.

do BC still pull that - "if you have a collision with another BC member, during a race you are not covered, due to conflict of interest" could you imagine if motor insurers pulled that - "yeah, not covered because both drivers are our customers, sorry"

It's a different subject to the one I highlighted above.  But that exclusion has only ever applied to competitive events, considering that the other options exclude most such events anyway, you'd be looking for a specialist policy if you wanted cover.

It does happen (particularly as many brands of insurance are actually owned by the same insurers) albeit that they don't deny cover.  Instead you often get decisions by insurers in such cases that disadvantage both drivers.

The CTC rag used to be great but it now has too much campaigning, you're-having-a-laugh overpriced kit and niche bike content for me.

It has not been anywhere near as useful since they "retired" Chris Juden. 
His articles guided my return to cycling after a 35 year break.
The only writer I have seen who advocated that small frames shouldn't just have shorter tubes, but lighter gauge tubes.
