ai editing - spot the diffs...

Had a go at taking an image, town scene (just after sunrise), back in time with 'magic eraser', on the phone camera's edit options...  Don't use it that often, sometimes for sun lens flare etc, but the results are quite impressive - the way the deleted section of the image is refilled.

I initially looked at that and thought, well it's just adjusted the brightness & contrast so you can see the buildings better.

But then I looked at it properly and realised it's zapped the people, crossing, cars and signs.  That's very good.

The phone used here is the Google Pixel 8 Pro *, using ai button edit tool (incorporates being able to erase/resize/move objects).  This requires (i think) an internet connnection as apparently the ai edits are done using Google Photos app via onboard chip together with cloud processing AFAIUI.  Other models of Pixels have magic eraser, & I assume it's v.similar. 
For the editing of the photo, I basically went through in turn selected individual subjects by drawing around them with my finger e.g. the costa sign, or bollards, and hitting erase.  Sometimes I repeated an erase, & generally it doesn't simply seem to do exactly the same thing twice, so one can get a better version of the edit.  I occasionally save my original quality images onto external hard drives, so don't have a Google 1 plan, just the basic free account.

* bought after my previous phone met a sudden & dramatic end.

This was an on the fly edit (one pass I think) of scaffolding on Wollaton Hall (Nottingham) a  few days ago.  As you can see on this occasion it's a fairly rough 'reconstruction'; though a tricky subject to be fair.  I think the ai processing desaturated the image slightly.

I did a quick rework of both sides of the street...  Interesting to see how the edit has added sunlight on the road to the right, at the end of the bridge wall.   ETA it seems like some PP needs t be done perhaps on levels/saturation...

The original edit attempt in removing 'modern day' was just to play around and see what could be done.

Interesting.  Yes, although there is still a 'magic eraser' option, when in Google Photos there's now a multicoloured 'ai' button, which brings up another image screen from where one can pinch zoom etc, and draw to highlight areas to erase/move.   There's more options to change the sky...  e.g.  in this case the options to choose from were fairly subtle...

Look at the image full size in Flickr, and it's obvious how much damage has been done the the bits of building that weren't obscured by the scaffolding.

The ai facade reconstruction is fairly rough yes; ok if you don't look too closely.     The area / window features behind the scaffolding should match the right hand side of the front of Wollaton Hall (vertical bilateral symmetry through front entrance?);  probably too complex a subject for the extent of the ai processing allowed by google for photo users.  I did try a reworking, but no real improvements in this case.

The ai engine, for this Wollaton image, came up with an option to 'remove people from the background' which worked well, if this was something one actually wanted to do.  Individual people = small area with enough surrounding image data to adequately fill in erased area, I suppose.

Ah. I viewed these on a smartphone so was only picking up on "what still looks wrong" rather than what is not perfect!

I wouldn't normally bother with a 'remove scaffolding' type of image edit, but mini ao requested the image for someone who is a batman* fan, BION.
