America's Cup - 2021
« on: 23 January, 2021, 03:02:42 pm »
Anyone else following the America's cup ?

An extraordinary turn round from the British team.

Lost all six races in the pre-Christmas regatta.

Switched out the rudder, foils, mast, mainsail, foresail, and the 'systems', and have won all races in the first round of the Prada Cup so now are in the final against either the Italians or the Americans (to be determined). (Winner of that goes on to the AC itself vs the Kiwis.)

I'm following (but don't tend to say much)

It just goes to show if you throw enough of Jim Radcliffs money and Mercedes CFD skills at something you can turn things around (or develop a world beating Sandbagging process)

We have a damn good chance this time I think, quiet what we do if we do win the Americas cup I don't know, its only been 170 years after all.

If the Americans do win from here, I expect the "based on a true story" film of the turnaround from almost sinking to winning will be in development before they get home.

Yep. The American boat's attempt to go into low earth orbit was one of the more spectacular bits of yachting I've seen.

Very familiar with the grief involved in not getting the leeward runner off in time, but when I've been involved with an incident like that we generally haven't been doing in excess of 40 knots.

I was impressed with how they managed to right it just like a dingy. Thought the capsize initially looked pretty terminal. Thanks for sharing the video

As far as I can make out they need a rescue boat to pull them upright.

I was in Auckland for some of the LV Cup series of pre-AC races in 1999, and lucky enough to watch some of the races from close up on a friend's boat. The IACC boats were nothing on the current foil boats, but still pretty special. I think there was no British boat in that series.

I made an arse of that once as well, given what I was sailing I was glad it just got tangled rather than something more fundamental.

In another place I was talking to someone about the 1988 AC and Blue Arrow, which is the closest to the current AC75 foiling monohulls as we have had I think*
At the time, the outright sailing speed record was only just over 40knots, and now they are match racing at that speed.
Madness.

The Ineos (UK) boat exceeded 50kts in the last race against Italy.

Anyone get the feeling that the wheels (hydrofoils?) have rather fallen off the Ineos challenge?

The Italians seem like the ideal combination of a faster boat on all points of sail and a crew that just doesn't make any errors.

4-0 down is going to be tough to come back from.
It is simpler than it looks.

This was looking likely from the semi-finals when the Italians seem to have made some big improvements. How will they fare against the NZ boat though?

Ben came back from 8-1 down in 2013
but that was coming into a boat from new
He was only tactician, rather than doing everything
...and was working with James Spithill rather than sailing against him.

No idea if the Italians can beat the Kiwis, will be fun to watch though.

New race schedule has been agreed to complete the Prada Cup with races 5 & 6 on Saturday 21/2 and 2 per day thereafter, if needed.

I have, perhaps dropped off the urgency when Ineos fell out.

Will not comment on todays racing (or yesterdays that I think made the difference)

I was happy that the ENZ didn't run away and hide in the first round of racing, but they showed signs of being the faster package in many wind conditions, but the Italians are I think tactically better (pre-starts etc)

Again not comment on the last few days because spoilers.

I hope the formula is unchanged for the next time round, but I can't see it happening.
