The Greatest. Very sad - possibly the most memorable character from my childhood.

Death of a legend. His style of boxing got him fame and exposure for discrimination etc. but also damaged his health and killed him.  :(
It is simpler than it looks.

Plus, possibly the most good looking man on the planet.

His refusal to fight in the Vietnam war was heroic.
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

Somewhat sorry he's gone, he added a bit of colour (figuratively speaking) to the general US backdrop.  Loved seeing Our 'Enry decking him.

"Man, I hit him with punches that'd bring down the walls of a city." - Joe Frazier after the Thrilla in Manila

"I'm gonna tell ya, that's one helluva man, and God bless him" - Ali on Frazier after the fight.

"Joe, it's all over. No one will forget what you did here today" - Eddie Futch, Frazier's trainer, telling the referee to stop the fight against Frazier's will.

I'm not really interested in boxing but that's what Muhammed Ali did: took boxing beyond two blokes hitting each other and decked it out with poetry, religion, politics and stuff. Plus, although Basil is probably exaggerating, how could a man whose job it was to get bruised and beaten be so good looking? Odd.

And of course he had the best boxing name (apart from Tyson Fury) twice over. Cassius Clay, a case of nominative determinism surely; and a name I misheard when I first heard it as My Hammer Dali, which is also what he did, even though at the time I'd probably never heard of Dali.

I'm not interested in boxing either, at least, not now. I was 9 when he beat Liston for the first time and the fight dominated television (only two channels in those days). Ali was one of the key figures to transform the relationship between blacks and whites in the US - a confident, erudite black man who was capable intellectually of running rings around the majority of white authority figures at the time. The fact that he used, nay, dominated boxing to convey this message to the world is just one of the very remarkable things about this amazing guy.

He lived in a country and in an era which meant that boxing was probably the only route upwards for someone of his origins.  Nevertheless, it made him become what he was and do what he did for black Americans.  Without such people the idea of a black President of the USA would have remained a fantasy.

His legacy in the ring would have been much greater had he not been banned for nearly four years.

His ability to box well was the very least of what made this man great.
Some people say I'm self-obsessed but that's enough about them.
