It's £15 for adult & bike on the steam train from Whitby to Pickering.
Then approx 43km ride to York

It's £7.50 on the train,icluding bike,from Scab to York.
Approx 16km ride to Scab from Whitby.

So that's a £7.50 premium to ride a steam train part-way back
 :-\

I think it will be one of those "I'll decide when the time comes depending on my mood" decisions.

But don't forget that a walk-up fare from scab will set you  back 15quid.... so you wouldn't save money unless you decide and book in advance and you would need to time your train out of Scarborough right!

Oooh!  I wonder if the NYMR would be more open to a trike on the train.  Riding back from Pickering makes it seem more doable.  I might enquire.

'slightly hilly'?  Yeah, I know that sort of 'slightly hilly'....

You shouldn't let the possibility of hills put you off.  On average it's downhill, as there's a massive freewheel into Whitby at the finish.

Besides, I've yet to lose anyone on a ride.  No man person left behind!

Yeah, I've heard that before too!  Any ride to the coast is downhill overall...

(I suppose if you started in the Fens and rode to Beachy Head, that wouldn't be true)

No, I get up ok, eventually. What's the mileage likely to be?

Long and slow, I do better than short and steep - I lose momentum very quickly.

There was also the advantage of not being able to see the road, so I kept thinking it must end soon....

Grand to come down, that one.  Worth the climb up.

I'm going to list some possible routes to Whitby. There isn't really a way of avoiding hills, although avoiding the Howardian hills might be a good idea.

Route 1 - simplest, using the A169

Hello mcshroom!  Do you like cake?

Does a cyclist like cake?  Does the Pope wear a pointy hat?

The lemon cake made it back ok, by the way, although it's a little more compact than it was due to being rattled about in my bar bag.  I will take it to my sister's - I'm sure Oli won't mind if it's a little bit crumbly.

Back from work now, and I think the sleepiness is finally catching up with me - had to have a quick lie down when I came in. But I think walking was the best plan, to stretch the legs a bit.

Can I sign up for this please. I've not booked it with the boss yet, but I enjoyed Friday night's ride to Scarborough so much that I'm definitely coming.

Explaining it may be a little difficult - non cyclists don't seem to understand the idea of night rides. However, as my son put it to his mother before the York - Scarborough night ride: "It's OK, Mum - no way can Dad be having an affair. If he was - he'd never dream up an excuse that weird... its just got to be true" ::-)

I think it's just a step further, isn't it. Some people can't understand how you could ride more than 5 miles for fun - hell some people can't imagine any distance for fun. Night rides must be the next level. Even some cyclists who ride for fun, probably don't see the appeal. I certainly do, now.

Oh, and when I saw my boss today, he asked how it went, and after I'd enthused, he said "so, are you going to do another one?"

"Oh yes", I said "......"

"...in October!"

He seemed not to be very surprised - that's how mad I must seem!

Oh, dear, it seems I can't make this ride.

 :'(

I was looking forward to wearing makeup on the bike.  Something I never do, because by the end of the ride I look like the Bride of Dracula.

It would've been perfect.

Have a fantastic night, all, and see some of you on the December 11th ride.

I'd always planned to use the A169 - it'll be deserted in the middle of the night (not that it's an especially busy road).  The only alternatives are going via Scarborough and the A171, which seems a bit daft, or going through the lanes.  I could guide us through, but it'd be lunacy to go through Rosedale or over Wheeldale Moor in the middle of the night...

Your route to Pickering looks fine - I don't know that area too well.

Sorry you can't make it, LG :(
