We have a 3 chinese takeaways, 2 chip shops, an indian, and 3 or 4 pizza/kebab shops within 0.3miles of our front door according to Google Mappery and what I can remember.  And 2 24 hour garages.  That's what you get for living in the student area!

I just ordered some cycling longs.

Not winter weight ones though.  I mean, that would be silly.

edit-I sent a PM to (I think) everybody who might be parking/lurking/carb loading/defrosting and recovering at ours with how to find us.  If I missed you off, shout!

I have had a thought about the brew up, as we are going along the A169, doesn't that go straight past the campsite @ Pickering? If so wouldn't it be worth seeing if we could stash the tea making equipment there, or is that too far into the ride for a brew?

I thought that seemed a bit early in the ride - and I'm not sure how well we'd be received, crashing into a campsite at 1.30 am...

I'm just going to carry a stove with me.  As someone suggested above, people can carry their own water for a brew-up.

Me! Me! My train arrives at 22.57, so I'll have an hour's kicking in York.

I've PM'd everyone my mobile number - I think.  Let me know if I've missed anyone.

I'll carry my gas stove, and a large(ish) gas cannister.  I will not be carrying vast amounts of water, so if you want a cuppa you'll have to donate some water.  I'll probably grab a pint of milk from somewhere near CrinklyLion's abode, since it would be silly to bring it all the way from the deepest south (and it might go off in a nice warm car!)
Actually, it is rocket science.

So, if Tim's magic pannier is going to be full of stove and milk (and an entire workshop's worth of tools from what I hear) and Deano's going to stuff the SuperCs with a stove etc, who is going to carry the cake, that's what I want to know!  I may have to bring a pannier and carry it myself  :o

I'll have room for a cake or two, there won't be that much stuff in there!

I'll probably have room in my rack bag for cake, especially as I'll be wearing most of my keeping warm layers

Can't you squeeze him into a bar bag ?   He'd match the Halloween theme  :)

hee hee!  Could you arrange a bundle of twigs sticking out the front too?  I'm sure I'm seen witches depicted riding bristles-first...

Um, not that I'm suggesting you're a witch....

I shared a house with a witch once.  She wore leather trousers a lot, and did stuff with crystals.

Obviously what's really needed is a wood-effect Bacchetta Giro.  "Pretending to be a witch" is a legitimate reason for n+1, isn't it?

Is there such a thing as an illegitimate reason for n+1?

I'm still working on the design for the front of my jersey.  The back's finished (though not quite what I had in mind).

Sod's law dictates it'll be too cold for jerseys, after all this effort ;D

I doubt I'll be wearing anything exotic, I've got enough issues and complexities just getting to the start of the ride!

It all sounds a bit suspiciously like fancy dress.  I was just round at a friend's house sorting out her printer, and she kept offering to lend me bat ears and witches hats and capes and stuff.  I'll just state for the record that I Don't Do fancy dress - the school silly dressy-up days (Comic Relief, World Book Day, random theme days) is one of the things I am incredibly glad that I have escaped by not being a teacher any more.  Although I'll absolutely defend your right to do fancy dress, if that's what you choose, of course.

She's now trying to persuade me to at least borrow some themed earrings.

I have a similar rule on fancy dress, but decorating bikes is, I reckon, fair game.

On the subject of decorating bikes, I thought of you earlier - we stripped a bike at the rescue and it had a googly-eye bell that got stuck in the bits for sale box.  Are you in any way desirous of acquiring of further sacrificial bells, or are you hoping that the streetmachine has had enough blood to slake its appetite for the time being?  I could keep an eye out for particularly silly ones.

(We also had a fine collection of spokey-dokeys at one point)

There's a hopefully-not-too-sacrifical mirror occupying the relevant section of handlebar on the other side, so I don't think additional bells would gain much in bike-protection terms.  Also, while my Captain Dashboard tendencies are well documented, I'd like it to remain - on balance - a bicycle, rather than feature-creeping its way to becoming (to borrow a phrase from a drummer percussionist friend) a mobile multi-timbral percussion workstation with stereoscopic music stands.

While I'm not going on this ride, this talk of decorating bikes has me thinking.  This is how it should be done:

(apologies if you've already got this one. It's a long thread)
There are two ways you can get exercise out of a bicycle: you can
"overhaul" it, or you can ride it.  (Jerome K Jerome)

Incidentally, if anyone wants a lift up (and back) from Croydon region to this ride I'm happy to offer it, but with my Corsa there's only room for a bike or a cyclist inside the car, and I'm using my bicycle carrier for my bike on the roof.  I could probably transport someone with something like a Brompton, but for any larger cycle there isn't really the room!
Actually, it is rocket science.

Spurn Point would be bleak good.

We don't have to ride to the coast every time, either.

Playing around with BikeHike I think you could do a fairly decent ride from Liverpool* out to the Welsh coast at Conwy or Llandundo.  Easy train back to Liverpool via Chester.

Start from Birkenhead, down the Wirral, cross the Dee at Queensferry, over the Clywdians and Denbigh moors then drop down to the Conwy valley.  Approx 60 miles.

I may do a recce ride in the near future.

* Underground to Birkenhead, the ferry doesn't run late at night and the alternative route via Widnes-Runcorn bridge is a drag.
