Just keeping the thread ticking on.. Might be time for a collection from the first year field trip to Tentsmuir. Pictures taken with a 55mm Micro Nikkor and rather a lot of extension tube.  or a 135/2.8 Nikkor (again with much extension). The square grid is at 5mm spacing. I'd have liked to do dark field illumination but don't have an etched glass scale.

A rather poorly looking bee. Mrs P tried to revive it with honey, but it didn't seem interested. It looked like something had laid some eggs on its back under its wings. Any ideas?

ETA - a quick look at images on the interwebs indicates they may be mites.

Was out the other day with my Canon SX40HS, Raynox 250 "macro" lens, and ebay special LED ring light:

The photos aren't as sharp as I'd like, mind you, I was shooting hand held...

I spotted this in an abandoned quarry in The Lakes.  It is only about 2 inches deep and was empty.  This was in early May.  Is it an abandoned wasps' nest, unfinished, or the nest of a much smaller insect?

A week or two later, back at home, I saw this mayfly which had just emerged from its previous "shell".  I understand it is the only insect which does this at this stage in its life, so was pretty pleased to see the two together, given the short life of the fully metamorphosed fly.

Not exactly a bug but on the same sort of scale. This is in a plastic storage box that had a bit of earth in then was left in the garden and collected some rainwater. A few days later we see this.
Looks like an earthworm and has been happily swimming about for a few days. Now the middle of it has erupted with loads of wriggly things. Is it reproducing or what?

No. Looks like a nematode infection. They are individual worms.

I'd only ever seen photos of this fake snake caterpillar before. Saw one isn the flesh and the phone camera doesn't do it justice.

Edit: it appears to be an elephant hawk moth.

Good find though, they're pretty big aren't they!
I got a bit excited then, I thought the invasion had started and they were going to be all over the country.

Should've known it wasn't England, it looks sunny on the photos ;D

It was mahoosive -  a very impressive insect. We thought it was a beetle to begin with, but after I thought it was more waspy, beeish in shape.
