Returning to road racing at 57

I last rode in a circuit race about 35 years ago, shortly before giving up cycling. I returned to the sport a year ago, and have since done a few 100kms sportives with reasonable times; I'm now looking at doing a few audaxes. However, I also feel increasingly drawn to trying out some road racing again (preferably circuit-type races) and am considering applying for a licence to do some 4th cat events (not LVRC ones though - those guys are too fast!).

What do you reckon needs to be the baseline for staying with the main group in this category - say, being able to hold a steady 20mph comfortably on the road, obviously with short periods of much greater intensity? Would that avoid me being disgraced? I've no great desire to progress to elite status (I work long hours so can't get enough training in :)!!), but perhaps picking up a few points for minor placings here and there might do the ego a power of good. Anyone got any experiences they'd like to share? Thanks.

Find a local club and ride with them. A competitive 50+ male will be on a par with the ladies section.

I rode both LVRC and BC(F) races into my early 50s. As you say, the LVRCs were harder, but you can ease your way back by riding in a category or two higher (i.e. with the over 60s or over 70s) by arrangement with the organiser - just don't take the prizes!

You can't be a 4th cat if you've ever been a 3rd or higher, so if you've been a 2nd or 1st in the past you can only be a 3rd. Actually, that's OK because some events are 3/4, and 4th cats only can be a total casino, with bodies flying everywhere!

Personally, I'd turn up to a few circuit races and accept that for the first few I'd find it hard, but that I'd soon get back to it.

Don't forget - age, experience and cunning will always defeat youth and fitness!
