Free VOIP Landline Number?
« on: 14 December, 2021, 06:14:54 pm »
When I was in Hungary I had an 0121 voip number that was free. Useful for folk to call me at UK rates.

It now appears to be dead. Hardly surprising given it's 11 years since last used.

So, is there any way of getting one now for free?

We use https://www.sipgatebasic.co.uk/ as our 'landline'.  If it's only for incoming calls, you shouldn't need to put any credit on it.

I also use Sipgate. It's used only for the rare outgoing call - cheap & reliable.

Thanks. Does it need any hardware?

It's a standard SIP account, so you can use any industry-standard VOIP phone (Snom, Cisco, etc) or ATA with it, or a software SIP client if you're a masochist.  No need for anything proprietary.

Mine runs through  a Siemens Gigaset  phone box thing. The same account also works perfectly on my mobile using the Zoiper free app.

Stock Android actually has a SIP client built into the phone app.  Obviously it's the first thing that gets disabled in the phone companies' custom builds...
