Title: gas and induction mixed hobs -any good
Post by: velosam on 17 May, 2019, 01:16:33 pm
Anyone have one - wish they had not.

I want to get an induction hob, however there are certain bits of indian cooking  - chapatis etc where a naked flame is preferable. Also I guess if I want to flip pancakes or stir fry, I am guessing gas is better.

So should I get a mixed hob or can I get a small gas stove burner?

The mixed ones seem very expensive, so that may rule them out anyway.

Get a stand alone work burner run off a bottle for what you want - bit like a paella gas ring.

For example..

My sister has one, four induction hobs and a wok burner. I'll ask her opinion when I next see her.

We've got one of those and we are very pleased with it. We would not go back to anything other than an induction for everyday use.

We like the controlability, and the way you can have a timer on any ring. The gas burner has only the little middle bit come on at low power settings.

A few very minor niggles. The gas burner doesn't seem to produce it's full rated output so there's no difference between about power setting 7 and max. This could be a restricted feed, but we don't know and it works as well as we want it and we can't be bothered to investigate further.

Water or a pan on the controls results in the hob beeping at us.

It has crashed a few times in 3 years, and needed turning off and back on again at the mains.

We really are living in the future...

We "inherited" this:

http://www.kitchenappliances123.co.uk/shop/pc/Whirlpool-AKT477iX-77cm-wide-Gas-on-Glass-and-Induction-Hob-p9562.htm?gclid=Cj0KCQjwt_nmBRD0ARIsAJYs6o2sSQfZvV3l_JFPCM5Fob0gxH3ogRFRzDsxWvKZdI6lMzKIptdkoUMaAptGEALw_wcB

When we re-did our kitchen, I say inherited as it was part of the ex-demo kitchen that we bought.

Would I have bought one otherwise? probably not

Would I buy one now? almost definitely

Why? I like cooking on gas, but the induction is much more controllable and we don't need to buy new pans to use it (though our most recent pan purchases have been with an eye to compatibility with the induction hob.

that is what I am thinking as well.

I feel its an aesthetic challenge to match the gas ring and an induction hob

We have an all induction range. I wanted gas (propane no gas mains here) but Mrs Pcolbeck insisted on induction because "the clean". She was right. Its easy to control, pans heat up almost instantly compared to older electric hobs and extremely easy to clean. No problem doing pancakes or flipping them. We have had it eight years and no issues.
I do occasionally hanker after a single gas ring for a proper Wok but there again not enough to go buy a single gas ring thing.
