I was at Snetterton on Sunday to see a relative of a friend in a 125cc race. He has just turned 15 which (to me anyway) made his 2nd place against last year's Chapmion by 0.035 of a second even better.
Never seriously tried to get photos like this before, although I am no stranger to the theory of panning. I started by not trusting the auto focus on the D90 + 18-200mm lens, and experimented with one of the preceding races. Tracking a bike moving at 180mph is tricky! I decided to try the auto focus and was impressed, so for Jordan's race I stuck with it. It was a nice sunny day, so these were at 1/500th sec., 200m slightly cropped. ISO200 f9 or thereabout. These (smaller) bikes were doing c 120mph here.
Photo 1 has just been used in the local paper with a story I wrote.
Now I want to go back and do more
Oh, and it reinforced my aim to get an interesting telephoto zoom for sports
