Paintjob pr0n
« on: 24 June, 2010, 02:58:57 pm »
I got my Roberts Audax Compact back from Mercian yesterday.  It's so gorgeous that it's almost more than I can do not to lick it like an oversized lollipop.

Oh.  Oh!  Ohhhh!

I think I had a little accident.  But I'm sure it'll wipe off....*

That's a very nice finish.  What is it?

It looks great - and hopefully harder-wearing than the Roberts paint. What colour was it before? It's going to seem like a whole new bike.

It used to be black sparkles.  Roberts paint is well known for being thin and flaky.  Shame really, as their frames are awesome.

I get the feeling that photos don't do the thing justice - am I right? It's gonna hurt putting the wheels in and seeing the paint flake away from the dropouts...

And what's the thread on the underside of the rear brake bridge?

I am going to jump in and guess that it locks the rear brake caliper on position in relation to the rim and keeps it properly centered as it is indeed a pain to make it so just using the caliper bolt.

I take it the caliper still moves freely once it is bolted in place?

It's for the mudguard, actually.  You drill a hole in it and screw it to the brake bridge before you fit the wheel.  Does away with the need for a nasty bit of pressed metal to hold it in place.

Nice Charlotte.

My British Eagle was rennovated by Mercian.  When I unwrapped the frame it was all I could do not to hang it on the wall rather than fit components to it.

My Lynx needs a respray and a new top tube since some bastard had a go at it and the D-lock left two small but noticable dints in it.

There are other options to replacing the top tube.

True.  But I didn't want filler because this is my best bike and I'm a bike tart.

I thought it might be something like that. My winter frame has a threaded stud in the same place, which I'd never seen before. Couple of trimmed rubber tap washers and a nut from the spares drawer and the rear guard is rock solid. I'm sure those pressed metal clamps are responsible for a lot of guards cracking.

That is truly beautiful.  I know where my Roughstuff will be going now for a second respray.  Roberts original was poo and so is the subsequent Vaz jobbie.

Ah yes, thanks awfully  ;D

Must be quite a tricky job replacing the top tube - presumably it is difficult to avoid affecting nearby brazing such as the tops of the seat stays.

I'd have thought so.  Unbrazing the old one and cleaning it all up must have been a right sod.  I can't see a single flaw anywhere - it's an incredible job.

We still need to dream up a colour scheme for the tandem to be resparklified (and a tiny bit of filler where the bike was knocked over).

Inspiration welcome...
