Good luck Things!

I hope they personally won't have time to be arsing about on social media ;)
-
Leading rider is about 1400+ miles into it. They must do some staggering starts since there is so many doing it. The Things tracker is as I'm typing this showing some movement.
-
Ha! Just clicked about and had a look at the other teams. There is a two man team, not many miles from where I grew up :)
-
I hope they personally won't have time to be arsing about on social media ;)
Whaddaya mean? One steers, the other tweets!
Good luck, Things!
-
There are three LS&G teams. 4 woman, 2 woman & 4 tandem. Currently sheltering from the sun in the starting enclosure and looking at people playing in the waves crashing on the beach in front of us.
Thanks for everyone's support. RAAM is a huge undertaking. The logistics are mind blowing. Yesterday we all spent 4 hours in the hotel car park practicing scenarios for rider and crew shift changes.
We're now debugging our backup comms systems......
Racing starts for us in 54 minutes.
-
Gosh! I just streetviewed (https://goo.gl/maps/kLeMb) the start. That's alright, innit!

I imagine.
For most other circumstances other than commencing a transcontinental cycle race...
*wilts*
Good luck, Things!

Good luck to the Things !

Here is a photo of them at the start - https://flic.kr/p/tZJc4q (sorry for the flicker link)
-
I didn't realise they were doing this. I hope they smash it!
-
Where they are now is 29c (about 9AM) will get about 38c later on today, hope they slip, slap, slop and DRINK!
-
Wow must have hit a bit of tail wind at the 400 mile maker - 93mp/h :)
-
Good look Things!
-
Hmm their tracker is stuck at 400 miles, been that for a few hours.
The lead mail rider is of course, by a fair bit. I wonder if they can do their own route or will the get taken time off. As it stands right now, there is four Danes in the top ten - sole male 18-49.
-
The lead mail rider is of course, by a fair bit.
Due to flooding near the Missouri and Mississippi River the @RAAMRaces route TS33 - TS36 was diverted.
-
One live tracker have lost them, so no live tracking, but they are pinging every check point there is and before schedule too.
T409 - Love, Sweat & Gears - Tandem - 729.20 miles done, Last check point 06/22/2015 4:43, 1 d 13 h 29 m, 19.45 adv speed.

They have a special class just for posties :o
-
haha :) Well there was the pony express over there some years back, so why not again :)
-
Go Things!
-
Just in RV heading up to Wolf Creek pass. Then it's all down hill to Annapolis :)
Legs feeling great today. Audax training ftw.
-
I've driven over Wolf Creek Pass on a Several of occasions. I do not envy anyone going up under their own power.
-
Yay, go Things! You're amazing.
-
1181 miles done, racing across the flats after the long down hill from the big hills. It is funny to see that they are now getting closer to the tail end of the first bunch of riders. Their release group were nicely bunched up coming out of Cali but now across the Divide they are rather close to the others.
The Things are going! \o/
-
Update on farcebook - The team got to checkpoint 20, Trinidad, CO @ 1:40 local time. This was the last of the major climbs in the west and they are still keeping up with the schedule.
-
They will shortly come into Kim, Co. I wonder if they are going to visit Kim's only emporium - Kim's Out Post - https://goo.gl/maps/6ewBG :)

After the Wolf Creek Pass the La Veta (between the San Luis valley and Walsenburg) scarcely merits a mention, though I imagine it's enough to slow down even the keenest of Things.
-
At last check point (23) 1379.80 miles done (06/23/2015 13:57), Time in saddle 2 d 22 h 43 m, 19.51 adv speed.
They are picking up, very soon, the solo riders who set off four days before.
The Things are really zooming :)
-
Check point 29: 1653 miles in a little under 3.5 days and an average a just shy of 20mph :o
-
There are not in in Kansas any more and over halfway. Go Things!
-

Are they doing without sleep altogether or is there a rolling average considerably higher than 20mph?
-
The Things are in Team RAAM. There is always a tandem on the road.
-
It's pretty amazing looking at Strava - their efforts are short (their longest appears to be around 23km) , but intense (30-40kph typically), and then they have to go again fairly quickly!
Hardcore - like riding lots of 10s every day.
Amazing stuff. Be fascinated how warm up and cool down is performed whilst transferring to the next relay handover point.
-
Most often with Team RAAM, there is no warm-up or -down as there is no time to spare. It is a case of getting on the bike with cold legs and hitting AT many times a day. Usually a 4-up team works as 2 pairs, each pair swapping out at frequent intervals (to keep speeds high) for a few hours while the other pair eats, sleeps, etc.
-
^ ah - that makes a lot of sense. It seems they do have a period where they are on the bike every 30 minutes and then off for a few hours:
15:00 - 7km
15:25 - 9.4km
15:53 - 11.4km
16:26 - 11.2km
16:59 - 7.5km
17:29 - 12km
18:16 - 16.3km
and then off the bike until nearly 23:00
Clever stuff and seriously hardcore!
-
If you judge it properly, the best climbing pair do more of the hilliest sections and the best flatland pair do more of the fast bits.
-
LW&B has it!
(Just waiting for our partner tandem to turn up, and sitting in phone reception for the first time in what seems like days)
Our tracker has had problems since we started and finally died yesterday. Won't turn on and won't charge. Previously it wasn't charging ( so was kept plugged in), and turning itself off every few hours.
It's fun, hard, exhausting, fun and really, really interesting.
-

Best laid plans and all that... Our plan held for nearly 24 hours!

They're AWESOME
Go Things!

Go Things!
A mate of mine was part of a four-unit multinational Dark Side team a Several of years back (which quickly turned into a three-unit team after one of their number knacked his knee1 early on). When asked if he'd ever do it again the reply was epic in its sweariness and all the more effective for being delivered in a Norn Iron accent like three Ian Paisleys.
1: Same injury put him out of PBP in 2007, which must be all the more galling for having come all the way from Captain Cook's Mistake and only get as far as Fougères on the outward leg.

Under 500 miles to go, these Things are going \o/

Wooly, your forgetting they are West Coast based so there is the small matter of 3000 miles home which I assume they are riding. ;) :demon:

Naa they are continuing in a strait line next stop Paris :)
-
Their back into hilly country, the current stage has a couple of 1000' climbs though I have to say I would want to ride the end of the next section .
-
Just over 200 miles to go \o/
-
Under 180 miles, now the question is - to sleep in or not to sleep in tomorrow morning.
-
They've cleared the worst section of them all, they'll finish in less than 9 hours

I'm waiting for the last 2 danish solo riders.
-
I was surprised how many Danes doing the ride and in the top 10 male solo. And the win by the Danish girl in the RAW too. Sad news about Anders - GWS.

Under 20 miles to go, go Things \o/

They done it - 3004.00 06/27/2015 1:51 6 d 10 h 37 m 19.43
Live streaming is about 30min behind hmm
-
They could have done it faster if they didn't stop ten metres from the start line :)
Well done Things and team Love, Sweat and Gears :)
-
Hurrah for those Things!
-
Yay, well done team LS&G.
-
Well done Things & Team Love Sweat & Gears!
-
All the posters etc says it is a 3000 miles ride across the USA. So why do all the trackers say 3004 miles done. I'll would have collapsed on the dot 3000 miles done and demanded CAKE!
-
Well done the Things!
-
Chapeau Things!

Chapeau Things! :D

Thanks for all the support folks, it really helped us.
Nowhere was open for beer when we arrived last night, so some of us are about to have some with lunch before sorting out the vans. It's amazing how much mess and chaos you can generate by having 25 people live in 5 vehicles for a week. It's going to be fun untangling everyone's belongings!
-
Congratulations, Things!
-
You are amazing! Well done well done well done! And have a hug, too.
-
What an achievement, congratulations to you both.
-
Well done Team Thing! Amazing!
-
pah, missed all the excitement. hats off to you both.
-
Having been away for a couple of days, only just seen this. Congratulations Things, amazing effort!
-
Congratulations Things; superb effort. And to the rest of the LS&G team too.
Is that a new record as well?
-
Good effort, chaps!
-
Late to the party - very well done Things!
-
Congratulations Things; superb effort. And to the rest of the LS&G team too.
Is that a new record as well?
Yup. A new 4 mixed tandem under 50 record, 1.03 mph (iirc) faster than the old record. We were a little off are targeted pace, but still pretty pleased. We all had a lot of fun too. For a very geographically dispersed team with a huge age range from a very wide range of backgrounds where most people knew at most one or two others beforehand, we all got on remarkably well.
-
Congratulations. That's quite an achievement.
What were the conditions like? I noticed there were some extremely high temperatures in the States last week, together with some pockets of very heavy rain and flooding.
-
We were very lucky with the weather. It was very hot on Saturday (when we started), but not as bad as it had been for the solo riders a few days previously. We also finished just ahead of a big storm. The people coming in 24 hours after us had been riding in heavy rain for 20 hours! We had a spectacular thunderstorm with added hail in Bloomington, and a nasty headwind for a 50 mile section in the Rockies. In Kansas it was mostly a sidewind, but not strong enough to cause us serious issues - it just slowed us down enough that we were overtaken by a couple of teams we played leapfrog with for most of the race.
-
Does this now mean you can eat lots of pies with total abandon?
-
Does this now mean you can eat lots of pies with total abandon?
My appetite is undiminished and I really need to stop eating all the pies ( it took me 3 months to lose the weight I put on in 2 weeks over Christmas). We all put a healthy dent in the amount of beer in Annapolis too (along with a few other teams). Fortunately there was some left for Shu & co.
One thing I have learnt by doing this is that anyone who rides a solo RAAM is truly exceptional. My admiration and awe of anyone undertaking it has only grown since experiencing it as a team.

There'll be a red carpet for you both outside the 'ut.

Also late to notice this. Fantastic to see you both achieve this. Well done, bravissimo, chapeau, and all the variants thereof :)
