I think that article is over-egging it a little. The Giant Weta has been documented before (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Barrier_Island_giant_weta) and the last biggest recorded was 70g (only 1g less than the new record holder).
I love weta - they're fantastic insects. We used to have a weta hotel in the garden and one of our neighbours, who worked for the old Forest Service, was involved in tree weta conservation.
Cave weta were my favourites though.
