Title: FNRtSR, The GOTH edition :) 2/11/2012
Post by: tiermat on 30 April, 2012, 01:12:43 pm
A ride out from York to Whitby, flat to start then it goes up a bit, down a bit, up a bit more then into Whitby.

I have done the last two of these, and greatly enjoyed them, obviously I shall be there again this year.

IIRC the NYM railway is running that weekend too, so a chance to ride the train back to Pickering is in the offing.

Running List:
Riding:
Tiermat
mcshroom
Deano
phanta
Kim
CrinklyUncle
loadsabikes
Mrs Miggins

Not Riding, but staying @ Whitby:
Barakta
Arch (+1, I'm not going to try and get the acronym correct :) )
CrinklyAuntie
2* CrinklyCubs

Possibly:
CrinklyLion
LG
MrCharly
Canardly
SFUN
Aidan
jogler

Deffo not Riding:

Absolutely up for a bit of goth-spotting.  And cycling, of course.  Preferably without the 45 minutes of standing around in a cloud waiting for the rest of the group to catch up take a shortcut to the café, though.

I'm in. Which route into Whitby are we taking?

Shall we all agree on taking the route the slackers alternative thinkers took last time? It was nice, the climb was a bit less strenuous and much quieter, traffic wise.

Or would you prefer to go the way the front group went?

Not all of us were standing around...

At least a passing motorist stopped to check if our mad Belgian audaxer was ok.

I'm not fussed about which route we take, as long as we all agree on it in advance. :)

Avoiding a climb and main road seems likely to be popular.

Yeah but what about that decent from the roundabout to the town centre :)

I'm in by the way - and also planning to ride back from Pickering assuming the trains are running and the weather isn't horrible. :)

Yeah, I must admit that I quite enjoyed that (and again in January with rower40, albeit on silly tyres), but I'm happy to leave it out if the popular vote is for the flatter route.

I can probably get the 'cottage' for the weekend if I book it now.  And have provisional outline agreement with CA that she could go on Friday to open up, taking a sufficiency of bedding and Essential Supplies, to meet us there on Saturday am.  And take the cubs, if it is a cubs weekend which I don't yet know, so that I can ride  :D

It's about £200 for the weekend, so eminently affordable if a few people want to stay 'til the Sunday and also if associated others who would like to join in the frivolities without riding (Mrs T? TLD? Arch? Alfred? Barakta?) want to stay Friday/Saturday.

3 double bedrooms, 1 twin bedroom, 2 attic rooms with mattresses on the floor, one gigantic settee, and a couple of camp beds in cupboards.  With a bit of organisation about who goes where it could easily accommodate over a dozen people in comfort.  The addition of the odd thermarest/sleeping bag would mean plenty of room for extras.

Show of hands from those interested?

I'd vaguely thought it might be pleasant to ride over on Friday night, breakfast at Arbut's, doze and socialise in the house Saturday, Fish and Chips for tea on Saturday, then Sunday morning assuming there's one running catch the steam train back to Pickering and ride back from there....

Timetable does suggest that there will be trains on Sunday (I don't know if that's kettle engined or diseasel) but there's no more info up for it yet.

Sounds good to me.  I have a vote of enthusiasm from barakta, if there's a space in a car going over.  She's not going to be able that kind of cycling in time.

And I already have an outline agreement for a CrinklyTaxi service from York and back again for your good lady, should she wish it.  Plus she has the advantage that she can turn her ears off and ignore the racket the cubs make in the car if they are there :)

Right, I have enquired about the 'cottage'.  It is possible that the family that own it may be using it themselves that weekend.  If they aren't, we have first dibs.  I'll know one way or another in a month or 2, which is still waaaaay ahead of when people need to make travel decisions if they want cheap advance train tickets.  Everyone happy with that for the mo?

It's the Goths that need subjecting to RL issues.
IGM (Black, heavy and knee-length) C.

Keeping an eye on this but committing to nothing for now.  What with it being the weekend before my burpday and all.

All the more reason to spend a night, sleep deprived, riding your bike over lumpy bits in North Yorkshire.

It's what I do, on or near my birthday (see the Saltburn ride)

She does realise that, between Pickering and Whitby, the road has a tendency to go UPWARDS, doesn't she?

Apparently this is no longer an issue, as the bike will float upwards naturally. :)

Apart from a bit near Whitby (which is short), the upwards is comparatively gentle. Gentle enough that, in the dark, one can fool oneself into believing that it is flat really.

this post may not be factually correct

Although I can't remember who has already told me that they wanted to stay.  It costs about 200 quid for the 2 nights, and last time it worked out at not_much_really each between us.

Loadsabikes - there's 3 doubles, 1 twin, then a couple of attic rooms with mattresses and a living room with a comfy sofa (plus various camp beds in cupboards).

I'm working on the theory that couples get first dibs on the doubles/twin, and that Cubs and odd bods fit into the attics/living room where they can.

CrinklyAuntie has agreed to drive over on the Friday night with the Cubs and Barakta, so they'll open up and stuff then ready for us arriving after breakfast at Arbut's caff.  Which means I can ride there :)  I also asked Arch if she and Alfred would like to/be prepared to go over on the Friday.  I figured that would give us a crack team of sensible people to greet us with central heating on, a fire lit, and the kettle boiled (hopefully they've replaced the kettle that was there).  There's duvets and pillows for all the beds, but you are meant to provide sheets/towels etc for yourself so I was going to ask CA to take the contents of my linen cupboard and as many sleeping bags as I could muster and would fit in the boot :)

It is _possible_ that if everyone who expressed an interest in staying is still planning to that all the 'couples' room are booked, but I'll put you as a first reserve for one while I do a bit of getting in touch with ppl over the next week or two to find out!

And I've emailed SFUN a formal invite :D

bIt a very particular definition of sensible.  But the sort of sensible that is entirely appropriate for being in the welcoming party for a bunch of tired smelly cyclists who have just ridden 50 odd miles over the NYM in winter :D

CL having mentioned this last week on the Pubbe ride, I reminded MFWHTBAB, who is still up for it, and hopes he may even be driving by then. If not, I'll be!

He did mention that if we could have the same room we had last time, that would be cool, as it'll be familiar, and hopefully sleep-inducing...

He's talking about bringing the bike rack and roof bars, in case ferrying services are required again.

Can we have fish and chips again on Saturday night?  ;D

Having bumped into Arch and her FWHTBAB yesterday, I was reminded to give this one a gentle bump.  They and CrinklyAuntie and the Cubs (with car space for Barakta) are still up for being the advance party, hurrah!

If anyone who is staying wants a bagdrop they need to get it here early enough for the cars leaving - not sure what time Arch+HF will be setting off, but I reckon CA and the Cubs will need to go relatively early since the boys will need putting to bed not hideously late!

I'm planning to send as many duvet covers and sheets and towels and pillowcases and sleeping bags as I can muster with them too.

Steam train on the Saturday/Sunday looks to be harry potter themed special....

We certainly intend to come along, but we may slope off on the Saturday to try and Make Some Money at a craft sale in Scarborough - seems to make sense to attend given we'll be nearer than York, and there's a free stall on offer (I just need to organise myself to send the form back).   We should be able to light the fire before we go, and be back in time for a chip supper.

We'd intend to head over pretty much as soon as I finish work at 4.30, so can help getting the house set up.

Bugger.  Just realised that our train tickets are for the 18:30 out of Mordor Central (I was thinking barakta getting out of work might be a limiting factor), which doesn't get in until 20:46.

List added to OP, please check and let me know of any amendments required.

One slight route change this year.

Instead of stopping @ the Hole of Horcum carpark, we carry on a short way and take the next right (from the map only about 100-200yds further on) and follow the track down a short way, between the trees.  There are two clearings in the trees there, one on the left and one on the right which should afford us some nice shelter from the ever present wind!

Down 'the Old Wife's Way'?  Seems sensible. The car park is so people can gawk at the view; aka stand in most exposed spot for miles and freeze their t!ts off.  I seem to recall that on the inaugural ride it proved a suitable test for people's stoves, with only 2 out of 4 able to get water to the boil.

It was bracing ;)

Are we fetching stoves, then? I'd rather not bother carrying one of mine, to be honest.

I'm intending to bring my Kelly Kettle, which boils 800ml of water in about 5minutes. So we may not need much else.  Marshmallows optional.

For them as are staying over, if you can get stuff to me at some point before the Friday lunchtime or so I can organise a bag drop via CA and the Cubs.

Kim can presumably send Luggage with Barakta, Arch and her FWMBAB :D

As long as the Luggage behaves itself, I don't want it running about all over the inside of the car on those little legs.

(same goes for Barakta.... ;))

What's our ETA in Whitby? It was about 6-ish a couple of years ago, I think. No later than seven?

And are we definitely going through Pickering on the way out?

(trying to plot it into a DIY 200, hence the annoying questions - sorry, Phil)

I'm being contrary, I'm afraid.  Despite lots of ppl doing stuff to enable me to ride this one, I'm going to me Dreadfully Sensible and Growed Up and Practical.  I'm not riding, I'll head to Whitby on the Friday and just do the weekending bit.  2 weeks away isn't long enough for me to be confident that I'll be fit for either the distance or the hills, and I don't want to be stuck somewhere exposed near the Hole of Horcum with a jiggered joint.  So I'll join the advance party and meet you for breakfast.

Being in lots of pain makes me Grumpy, anyway.  You don't want to risk having to ride with me when I might be Grumpy.  You wouldn't like it :)

Sorry to hear it, but will be happy to see you when we get there with Barakta.

Having baled from even the easiest rides for most of the year due to getting rather Out of Fit, I know how you feel, but I agree, it's not fun to feel you're struggling, and very Not Fun to damage yourself.

It is indeed not a ride to do with a misbehaving joint.  That endless slog up onto the moors is very unforgiving of that sort of thing.

Right, CrinklyAuntie and I have had a good natter about Logistics and Stuff for the non-bicycle bits of this particular SBA.  And I'm collecting the keys from my mate on Thursday.  So, non-riding stuff....

Arch - are you guys still OK to pick up Barakta?  If so, CA and I will head over Friday afternoon and open up, get the heating on, that sort of stuff.

Between us we reckon we can rustle up about enough towels to go round.

I'll take as as many sets of bedding/sleeping bags as I can muster, should be enough for us plus a set for one double room and the twin room and maybe some spare for the attics.

We'll go to the horriblemarket on the way to Whitby and get some supplies in.

I'm assuming Saturday morning, breakfast at Arbut's.
Saturday daytime, having some bread and cheese and stuff around for anyone that is hungry.
Saturday evening, Chish and Fips takeout?

I'll bring some cereal, milk, lacto-free milk, orange juice with no bits, tea, coffee and raid my freezer for it's vast reserves of audaxer fuel bacon and kim-friendly sausages for Sunday breakfast.

I'm assuming that Arch and her FWHTBAB will pick the same room as last time (bring your own duvet cover/sheet/pillow cases!), CA can pick a room for her and CU (probably the same one as last time, bringing their own duvet cover/sheet/pillow cases too) and Barakta can go round n bounce on beds to find the room that has the most hip/shoulder friendly bed for her and Kim between the other double and the twin - I'll bring bedding for both.  Loadsabikes and Mrs Miggins - you happy to have the one that is left?

That leaves the two attic rooms, and the sofa, for me/cubs/Deano/anyone else who wants to stay.

So Friday night sleepovers:
Barakta
Arch + HFWHTBAB
CrinklyAuntie
CrinklyLion and the CrinklyCubs

Staying on Saturday night

Barakta +Kim
Arch + HFWHTBAB
CrinklyAuntie + CrinklyUncle
CrinklyLion and the CrinklyCubs
Deano
loadsabikes + Mrs Miggins

Maybe staying Saturday?
mcshroom?
phanta?
Canardly?
MrCharly?

The cottage is 200 for the 2 nights, so with a dozen-ish of us staying if we just split it it is less than a tenner each - does that sound OK, rather than indulging in complex bistromaths?

Any particular requests for shopping while we're getting provisions?

What are people's thoughts for getting back from Whitby?  There's the ride to Scarborough option, for a train to York.  Or steam train to Pickering, ride back from there (or ride to Malton to pick up a scarborough train).  With warning (not least to ensure bike racks are available) I'm sure that a certain amount of car assistance could be arranged like last year.  There wouldn't be space for everyone and their bikes to get lifts to York so ppl prob need to think about it - but Barakta is definitely guaranteed a lift back!

Good point, well made - that was one of the other things CA and I discussed.  I won't be at the Den - although I could leave keys, somewhere, if needed?  Also I guess CU will be around at theirs (near the racecourse) or maybe mrcharly might be able to take in waifs and strays waiting for midnight?  AFAIK it's just Kim who is particularly expecting to get there a couple of hours or more in advance....

Btw, anyone else concerned that Kim is asking for branez for the halloween ride....

Yup, should be!  We have complex plans involving a trip to see the lit up stuff at the NRM first, and parking the car in town for easy access. Can Kim/Barakta confirm the arrival time please? There's a drop off lane at the front of the station (under the canopy, alongside the taxi rank, not right out on the street), which I assume is ok for pick up too. We may elect to try and arrive a little after the train, if it's ok, since it'll be easier for Kim and Barakta to loiter out front waiting for us, than for us to loiter parked in the drop off zone, or go round the block several times.

Depending on the efficacy of MFWHTBAB's car sealing attempts, be warned, the carpets in the car might be damp. We have a mystery leak.  Shouldn't be a problem, assuming Barakta isn't wearing dainty-suede-and-satin-mustn't-get-damp type shoes...

Can you PM me a postcode/address so we can put it in the satnav? I assume we can park in the same carpark as last time? We'll probably be without bikes at all, since it was more complicated to travel between the carpark and house on a bike than it was on foot!

I'll remind MFWHTBAB to bring bike rack bits.  I suspect he'll also have a fairly comprehensive tool kit too, but I'll make him promise not to fit electric motors or winches or extra wheels to anyone's bike without permission....  ;)

We can always nip out for provisions during Saturday if required, not having ridden through the night, we might be able to stay awake.  If nothing else, we need to go and buy a pot of random seafood so that MFWHTBAB can test whether I like cockles etc.

Sounds sensible.  Train is the 18:30 out of Mordor, arrives York 20:46.  I'll offload barakta and a pannier or two, and proceed to wherever en velo.

I don't have any dainty shoes and my bag will not be too big 1x rucksack if I get my own way + a pair possibly of Kim's panniers which should be quite packable.

Trying to think of other things that CL has mentioned and I'm failing at this point as tea and lactofree are both in the list.

Is there anything useful I should bring or do for the trip in general or for Arch and MFWHTBAB?

Not that I can think of, bar being ready to hop in the car when we pick you up, if it's busy! I'll PM you car details so you know what to look out for,  but I'll be looking out for you.

Do you have a preference for front or rear seat by the way? If you prefer the front, I'm ok in the back - assuming MFWHTBAB is driving.

Front is probably easiest from a hearing point of view if you're OK in the back, but I also have ebook so can read quietly in car too so either is fine.

We might be - it will probably depend on our respective ability to get up (at least get up in a more organised fashion than merely fire lighting duty).

Although I seem to remember a built in Cub-Alarm clock last year, so yes, we may be up...

Despite having a surfit of CBAs this week I am still for this, and the weather is looking like it is going to be good for it too! slight chance of light rain with not too much cloud cover, add in a nearly full moon and we should get nice views across the moors (I have jinxed it now so we will have rain, hail, snow and sub-zero temps with a nasty headwind all the way :) )

I meant ride - I have an old ankle injury that makes walking uncomfortable at best. And going up is much more fun than going down.

I can't believe I'm the first person to see the innuendo potential in the above post.

Is there anywhere I could drop off a wheel so that phantasmagoriana can collect it please? I'd prefer not to carry it to Whitby :)

Oh go on. Bolt it on and make like a trike....

(Ah, I get it. You're afraid if you leave it lying around in Whitby, MFWHTBAB might do just that for you..... ;))

I think I'd like to come back via Rosedale Chimney; seems a shame to miss riding up this, never done it.

 :o

It's the natural route back to York from Whitby - I haven't checked, but I think it's shorter than our route.

It would make quite a good summer run. I never really considered it for this ride two years ago, though, as no one would've fancied going down chimney bank in the dark. And that road from Rosedale to Egton bridge is a brute.

Anyone bringing coffee, by the way?

I still intend to bring boiling water making device.

If some peeps could bring a bit of plain water, that would be good. I can carry 1.5l total.

My headtorch has died. I presume others will have suitable lighting equipment

It's the need for light when manipulating boiling water etc. A volunteer to shine light as needed would be appreciated. I have a rational fear of boiling water, we have previous, you know.

I'll bring an extra bottle of water, some marshmallows (non-veggie - I'm afraid I'm not that strict!)  and skewers if there's going to be a stove.  (I have one but haven't yet tried to use it - the moors in the middle of a November night is possibly not the best test run!).

Presume it's a good idea to bring a cup (I didn't last year!)? I think I've got disposable ones somewhere, if necessary...

However, I would like to come across and say hello tomorrow morning.  The train doesn't get in to Whitby till 0838 however.  Will you all be asleep on the floor by then?

It's a one big rucksack job as barakta's b0rked her shoulder, so flying pickup should be straightforward.

We're off to Mordor Central now.  Via Silly Oak, because using a bus would be adding insult to injury.

...and I'm out.

I started with good intentions, getting out of bed @20:00, having a shower, getting changed and sorted in record time.

Rode to the station and had that horrible feeling in my head that I know means that I have a cold AND a migrane coming on, as well as my guts not being 100% (no I didn't feel that in my head, I felt it elsewhere).  After the carlisle to Newcastle ride it took me 6 weeks to get over the cold I rode through then, not something I want to repeat in a hurry.

So I texted Deano and returned home, sorry guys, have a good one and I'll catch up with you all (hopefully all of you) on Thursday.

It's going to be a chilly one.

We never established who was the model for the layout that was on the floor when we arrived last night. I think Kim took a picture.

We've had a nice trip out on the steam train from Whitby to Grosmont, where we had lunch and cake. Now enjoying tea, and thinking about a stroll before it gets dark, to spot some more Goths.

I'd like to know who was the stupid git who suggested the road from egton to rosdale? Oh, that would be me  I have a photo of a big sign with '30%' on it. Made it up that with one brief dismount when traffic prevented me from zig zagging. Took ages from there to Rosedale. Decided I could either ride back to York or try Rosedale chimney but not both. So I did the chimney and what a good sweep am I. I'm not sure I'll even be able to get out of bed tomorrow, but I have managed 2 toughest climbs in my life.

My question was with Dylan Thomas in mind, and therefore smutty.

Quote
In Pembroke City when I was young
I lived by the Castle Keep
Sixpence a week was my wages
For working for the chimbley-sweep.

Six cold pennies he gave me
Not a farthing more or less
And all the fare I could afford
Was parsnip gin and watercress.

I did not need a knife and fork
Or a bib up to my chin
To dine on a dish of watercress
And a jug of parsnip gin.

Did you ever hear a growing boy
To live so cruel cheap
On grub that has no flesh and bones
And liquor that makes you weep?

Sweep sweep chimbley sweep,
I wept through Pembroke City
Poor and barefoot in the snow
Till a kind young woman took pity.

"Poor little chimbley sweep," she said,
"Black as the ace of spades
O nobody's swept my chimbley
Since my husband went his ways

"Come and sweep my chimbley
Come and sweep my chimbley"
She sighed to me with a blush
"Come and sweep my chimbley
Come and sweep my chimbley
Bring along your chimbley brush!"

This may not seem remarkable, unless you were privy to the huddle of forummers at various stages of the weekend, trying to make my dongle work... They blamed the Goths.

Well, another fabulous weekend, even for the non-cyclists. Good company, steam trains, fish and chips and copious tea, courtesy of a functioning kettle!

We're home now, winding down before I work out what we've got for dinner.

Thank you for the lift MFWHTBAB and Arch, and thanks to CL, the riders and everyone else this weekend.

In answer to your question, we watched the train pull out as we got to the platform so we had to catch the later one. In the mean time we managed to find a pub that served 'home cooked food every day' (but not until half an hour after we arrived), and after wondering around Scarborough for a bit we ended up eating chips in the waiting room.

I got just past Penrith on the way home before I was too tired to be driving, so after an hour or so in a lay-by on the A66 I got home at just before 1am this morning. I'm glad we cycled Friday night not Saturday though as the car thermometer got down to -1oC on the way over the top last night.

So I did the chimney and what a good sweep am I. I'm not sure I'll even be able to get out of bed tomorrow, but I have managed 2 toughest climbs in my life.

Many thanks to the house crew for making us welcome.

Thanks to Ruth for accompanying me out of Whitby

CU was on about going back the same way...

Thanks to all involved - that was fun. :)

Six of us set off from York. An early and not entirely successful stop for coffee at a service station (they'd stopped doing coffee by then) led Mr Bunbury to the aid of a student in need of sweets but with not quite enough money. He then left us at Stamford Bridge having not been persuaded to come along for the whole ride.

It didn't seem quite as cold as the forecast had suggested, though I was wearing rather a lot of layers and had to don a second pair of gloves. As we went over the moors the mist descended, making downhills a little scarier.

The half-(ish)way stop was much less windy than last year, due to it being less windy and in a less exposed place, and it was rather civilised as mrcharly (having by far the most luggage, and still getting to the top of all the hills first!) produced a very large stove, lots of water, several cups, and proceeded to make filter coffee. And we toasted marshmallows (note to self: carry a spare spoke, as they have multiple uses!).

Blue Bank wasn't quite as scary second time (for me) round. I was pleased that I wasn't the only one taking it slowly this time, as the surface was a bit wet. With a small group, we managed not to get split up at the bottom this year and took the "easy" (i.e. not up over the main road) route into Whitby. It wasn't as easy as I'd remembered, involving various hills including a 20% one covered in slippy leaves. :-\ Consensus from those who'd done both routes was that the main road is a better choice.

With impeccable timing, we arrived at Arbut's just as the clock was striking 6am, which is when they open. We were shortly joined by the CrinklyPosse for breakfast, then back to the house to vegetate in front of the nice warm fire for a bit. LindaG stopped by briefly, before accompanying mrcharly on part of his ride back. A train track was built around CrinklyUncle, though he wasn't asleep.

mcshroom and I both needed to get back to York, but couldn't quite decide whether to go on the steam train and ride back from Pickering, ride to Scarborough and then get a train or just hope for a lift as far as Scarborough. In the end, inertia and the lure of the sofas and nice warm house won out, and Arch's FWHTBAB kindly gave us a lift in the evening. Going there in the car reminded me of what a bad idea it would have been to try cycling that road. It's a bit uppy-downy...

As we arrived at the platform the train pulled out, and so we set off on a wander round Scarborough as I was hungry and wanted to find some food. We ended up eating chips in the waiting room, before getting the next train to York.

Wish I'd stayed until today, actually. Next year, maybe...

That was a great weekend that I really enjoyed.

The night ride was great, and it was another ride that showed to me the progress I have made with cycling over this year.
Here is a picture from the coffee stop:
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7137/8155659962_97e08d3924_n.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/74277693@N03/8155659962/)

On Sunday morning for some reason I decided it was a good idea to ride home.  I’d heard a lot about Rosedale chimney on here and I wasn’t sure I had seen it before so decided to go take a look... I left Whitby at about 14:00.  I stopped just outside Whitby for a faff where Arch etc passed me leaving in their car, they stopped to check I was ok (which I was, thanks for that). I continued on to Egton where I came across this:
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7276/8155627067_9845b882fa_m.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/74277693@N03/8155627067/)

Shortly followed by this:
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7252/8155625189_6b1a36b8c0_m.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/74277693@N03/8155625189/)

I made it up most of it but like mrcharly I got stopped on one of the steep bits by a car.  I have difficulty setting off on a steep section so I had to walk up a bit until the incline was shallower.

By the time I got to Rosedale Abbey it was getting dark and cold and while descending Heygate Bank in to Rosedale Abby I got a good look at Rosedale chimney and decided that today was not the best day to try it.  So I diverted to Pickering, then on the way to Malton I was over taken by 3 gritters one of them was gritting as it passed. I got to Malton a few minutes before a train was due so I jumped on it for the final part to York.

That's a lovely one.  The steam was very good there, I almost did the thing of running down the platform calling "Daddy, my Daddy!"

We stopped briefly at the Hole on the way back, to look at it in daylight, and there's a bus stop there, with a rather sparse timetable detailing the three buses a day that stop there. Also an exhortation to text to find out the time of the next bus. Presumably in case the timetable was too complicated...

We checked, though, and there was at least mobile signal! Presumably Fylingdales helps...

Almost as scary as SFUN doing it last year with, effectively, no brakes  :o

I will post some thoughts about the weekend later, maybe, when I've got past a very busy couple of days - but _need_ to say thank you to everyone for all making it such a gloriously lovely weekend for me and m'boys.

A bit of boring accountancy... lots of people thrust cash at me at various points.  If you realise you've overpaid me or that I owe you some change then PM me and I'll sort it out - I more or less kept track of what I was spending on stuff, but didn't pay enough attention to what people gave me.  I'm blaming the staying up til half 4 gossiping followed by getting up before 6 o extract boys from sleeping bags to get to the cafe for breakfast!  Costings, calculations etc (roughly and approximately because life is too short for complex bistro maths when you're as sleep deprived as me today) as follows:

House 200 total - £12 per person per night.
Counting kids on a 2-4-1 deal, I made it 7 person-equivalents on Friday night and 9 of us on Saturday, so divided 200 by 16 to give 12annbit quid a head per night.

Fish and chips on saturday was £6.70 a head for a growed up portion

Steam train to Grosmont - £9 a head
£71 for 7 adults and 2 brats, on a complew combo of family/adult/concession tickets.  I worked it out as kids 2-4-1 so divide by 8 giving just shy of 9 quid each, which I believe works out that everyone paid a couple of quid less than they would have done by buying tickets separately apart from Barakta who probably got the least advantageous deal as that's what she probably would have paid anyway but I had forgotten that when I was in the cafe working it out because I needed COFFEE!!!!

Food'n'stuff
I spent about 30 quid in advance on food stuff for Friday tea, and to have around, plus loo roll and that kind of thing.  Topped up with assorted random bits and bobs from the CrinklyDen zombie-apocalypse survival/emergency audaxer fuel stashes and £15 quid for the shopping in the coop in Whitby - but we didn't eat all of it and I've brought all the leftover stuff back here, so I reckon the contributions from the day trippers pretty much covers most of my outlay on that bit.

Boozahol
It was all stuff on special offer! I spent 35 quid altogether, brought a fair bit of it back with me, and it was only a few of us drinking anyway - mostly me and That Deano and I must owe him a billion pints because he always gets to the bar ahead of me on the pubbe runne, what with being fast and all, so the booze is on me.

Does that all seem fairly reasonable, transparent and fair?  And _seriously_ do tell me if I owe you change or you've overpaid, because I probably won't notice! Or, indeed, if you ended up paying more than you can sensibly afford - I booked the house and budgeted the last couple of months on the basis that actually, I could and was prepared to take the "loss" if the whole shebang got cancelled and it ended up just being me and the boys so you wouldn't be leaving me short of school shoe funds!

At last a ride report! Well, that was a good weekend, it was lovely to meet up with everyone again, or for the first time.

First, thanks to Tiermat for arranging it, and we did miss you. Apart from anything else, a lot of beer was left un-drunk. I did what I could.

And thanks to CL for organising the house, which was a bit too comfortable in some ways. It took me ages to get going on the Sunday, which was an echo of Mcshroom and Phanta on Saturday; they were in the comfy chairs when the rest of us went down to the beach for an hour or two, and when we returned they were in the same seats, and the same poses.

Five of us met in the York Tap, plus a cameo from bunbury. I was first in, and some of the drinkers commented on my outfit. At least I had a bike outside, what was their excuse for dressing as nuns and witches, was there a black mass on the go?

I quickly realised that, given the company, we'd probably reach Whitby at about 4.30 am, but as the York Tap had called last orders and the bacchanalia in the rest of town didn't appeal, we needed a plan B for slowing the ride. I tried to get coffee at the space station cafe, but the lad at the counter couldn't go and get it, and wouldn't let me in to get my own, so we faffed about for a bit while I had a fag and drank some of my pre-prepared coffee and whisky. I'd brought my own whisky this time, since Andrewc wasn't along. I still think, with a little more group effort, we could have persuaded the student in her jim-jams to come on the ride. Goths! Whitby! Empty roads! Some hills. Who wouldn't want to come along?

The tailwind gusted us along the lanes to Buttercrambe, plus a bunbury diversion towards the glittering metropolis of Stamford Bridge, where he left us to go bunburying back towards York.

It was still a fast-moving ride, though to slow things down we were ably guided along a longer, lanier route to Buttercrambe by CU and Mrcharly. I was just happy to follow and talk rubbish, though I started to recognise the rolling run-in to Malton, where I started to warm up on the wee climbs. I should, since it was only three weeks ago that I rode the same way on Gerry's Autumn Brevet.

This year, there wasn't an ambulance charging down the hill from the ambulance station at Old Malton, but the lights at the crossroads by the Yorkshire Tea Room still refused to respond to cyclists (much like the service in the tea rooms), prompting us to nudge our way cautiously through the red, and onto the A169 which would take us onto the Moors and nearly all the way to Whitby. I had the thought, which I didn't express, that the Roman road across Wheeldale would be a pleasant diversion, and would have ensured that we weren't too early for breakfast. Phanta in particular would not have been amused at the extra hills, especially the 1:3 grunt from Egton Bridge to Egton* and the extra extra-slippery descents. One for next year, perhaps.

The long drag up to the Moors from Pickering took us up to the top of the Moors and the Hole of Horcum in stages, which lifted us into the fog, a thick, clammy sea fret which clung to everything and revealed nothing of the way ahead. With a few yards' visibility and the following wind, it didn't feel especially steep, until a car's full beams appeared at the top of the first rise, and seemed to rollercoaster down towards us.

We had a debate about how close we were to the Hole of Horcum (where we weren't stopping), and the slight diversion tiermat had planned for the tea stop. In the fog, it was hard to judge how close we were, so I called a stop at a layby to the left of the road, in the shelter of some trees. Mrcharly brought out his impressive stove and treated us to a display of self-sufficiency. I can't believe the amount of stuff he was carrying with him - he didn't quite out-do 'slow'coach's luggage strategy, since 'slow'coach managed to include spare network switches, an engineering textbook and a map of Norway, but mrcharly had a stove capable of boiling three litres of water, enough wood to fuel three litres of water boiling, teabags, sugar, milk, coffee, a coffee filter, marshmallows, and three litres of water. Much marshmallow burning went on, with spare spokes as improvised skewers. It was considerably less exposed than the layby at the Hole of Horcum, but still getting a bit nippy by the time we set off for the last pull to the summit.

The descent from the Hole of Horcum (spectacular in daylight, just a black hole to the west at night) was terrifying. Visibility was down to not-very-much, and the road surface was like a slipper: slippery. I remembered seeing Arch on her trike gliding around the sharp right-hander a couple of years ago. Where was she now? Watching mcshroom vanish into the fog just before the bend was a much less reassuring sight. At least I had remembered the bend was there - I'm not sure he had...

A quick swoop down, and we caught up with the others for the climb towards Fylingdales. I had mooted the idea of a brew-up in their car park, but we decided that the spooks mightn't have had a sense of humour about it. The fog had cleared and the arc lights dimmed the stars until we pulled away up the hill. Night riding is good for the soul: although you do generally get to see the Hole of Horcomb during the day, you don't tend to get starlight over the moors.

We had a discussion about who would be the slowest down Blue Bank, where we descended back into the fog which was rising from the river Esk, and if it was a competition, mrcharly comprehensively lost. Blue Bank has a long, gentle lead-in, making it possible to carry a lot of speed into the steep part of the descent, but I rode cautiously, aware of how greasy the roads were.

We re-grouped in Sleights, for a discussion on the route we should take into Whitby. The main road is simple, and provides a satisfying last descent to the sea, but I was assured that the alternative route was shorter, and flat. It was certainly shorter (but not quicker - routefinding by committee and all that), and there was only one hill, but it was a steep 'un, which was 'closed' and the steepest bit was clagged with an inch-thick layer of leaves and mulch. I gave up when I started to lose traction on my rear wheel, which was just after I'd decided that I wouldn't actually be able to turn my front wheel to make it around the bend.

Dawn was starting to lighten the sky out over the sea by the time we reached the outskirts of Whitby, and some early morning people were around as we descended to the river and around the docks for our final crossing of the Esk, over the swing bridge and up to the cafe. No goths or night people around - except for us, of course. The church bells were chiming for six o'clock, so we couldn't have timed it better for Arbutt's, which opens at six. We were the first customers, and four full Englishes (plus one cheez on toast) were sooon ordered. Arbutt's, with its traditional menu of classic fried breakfasts, feels like a holdover from a different era, soon filling with burly trawlermen guzzling mugs of hot, sweet tea. And the Crinkly Clan, of course, who joined us for breakfast. It was also warm enough to fall asleep, which mrcharly did.

The house was warm and a good spot for some sleep and goth-spotting. It was very entertaining to look out the window and watch the people going up and down the lane, though Phanta was a bit discombobulated by one person who broke the fourth wall and waved at her. And over the harbour, as the goths emerged from their crypts or whatever, the line of people climbing the steps to the graveyard and the abbey changed from the reds and greens of day-trippers to become a black procession. There was lots of hanging about the churchyard.

That was the end of the ride, but not the weekend. I did plenty of sleeping, and mooching about. Some drinking. Fish and chips. Some wandering about on the beach, too:

(I know, that last one isn't a beach, it's an alley down to the chippy, popular with the goths)

On Sunday I realised how comfortable the house was, and took an age to leave. I was going to get a train back, but the only train from Whitby was 8.45 in the morning, and getting up at 9.30 kiboshed that plan. The 20-mile ride to Saltburn was tempting, but it has been a long while since I rode along the Moors Road, and it's not an especially hilly route, so off I went.

The traffic was your typical weekenders rushing back to Teesside after a weekend of debauchery in Scarborough (not that I could judge). No wonder I don't go that way often. Still, Scaling Reservoir catching the late afternoon sun was a rewarding sight, as was the sunset from the top of Birk Brow, where I descended again into the sea-fret which was bookmarking my weekend's riding. I'd watched it develop over the Tees estuary as I rode north, and it made the slog on the Guisborough bypass up to Boro a ride of chills and gloom. Boro at its best, and the drivers weren't that bad, apart from one lunatic on the dark stretch of Low Lane west of Acklam. And the fog had vanished by the time I passed Stockton.

So thanks, everyone, for a lovely weekend. Same time next year? Hopefully we can get some slower riders along: as I commented to tiermat later in the week, slower riders are very useful for making sure you don't arrive at the cafe too early.

*That'll be the hill CU went down.

Great write up.

Yes, I'd like to do it again sometime. Maybe if we work at it over the next year, MFWHTBAB and I will be up to it.  We might well have been this year, if it weren't for his achilles going at the start of the summer.

Driving back in the light, though, I'm always amazed how hilly it is, since my memories are of long gentle uphills I hardly noticed. Not being able to see a hill really does help!

Those hills are gentle when heading up from the south, very steep from the north.

I'm not sure why I remembered that as being particularly flat (and I don't remember that 20% sign being there last year: I think the hill grew :-\). It definitely wasn't as slippy and leaf-covered last year, though.

Driving back in the light, though, I'm always amazed how hilly it is, since my memories are of long gentle uphills I hardly noticed. Not being able to see a hill really does help!

It really does! I'd much rather go up hills in the dark, if I have to go up hills at all. Though daylight is much better for coming down them...

That's going to make most bike rides quite long though, isn't it, if you have to wait for dark to go up and light to go down.... ;)
