I'm no great photographer, but I'm quite pleased with these, taken on holiday recently. The camera is a Canon Ixus 70, and all shots were taken in full auto mode, so no intervention from me.

You can get some spectacular pictures when the sun is low on the horizon. Out of those I like the first and last most. The first one has a nice graduation of colour and intensity, whereas the last one has lots of "texture" in the clouds.

Those Liverpool shots are great - the grey city and the glowing sky

The majority of my photos are non-digital, but here's one I've got on the computer. The photo is of sunrise from the TAZARA train that travels from Dar-es-Salam to Zambia. This was taken somewhere in Tanzania and I had plenty of time to watch the sunrise because the train was stationary for about 6 hrs

One of the sunsets in the middle of nowhere in Mali, looking across the Niger.
This one was for Dave. Dave would disappear behind a bush with a bucket of water to wash his hair every evening for a wash and brush-up before it got too dark. By the time he emerged, he'd missed the sunset. So I took a photo of the unset every evening so that he would eventually see what he'd missed (this was in the days of film, he had a long wait). BTW, no photoshoppery involved.

Errr... aren't you (always) looking West if you are looking at the palest part of a dusk sky?
-
Nice pictures everyone. I'll have to look and see if I've got any old ones but I don't think they're up to much... Now I'm waiting to see if anyone's lucky enough to bag an elusive 'green flash'* but I'm not holding out!
Elleigh, your first piccy is very good of you, don't feel shy about being in your own picture, it's quite natural for people not to like pictures of themselves (well I, for one, don't!). The second picture you posted is of course, not sunset but Aurora Borealis. At least, I'd be rather perturbed if I saw the sunset due north (except in the high Arctic). The aurora is something I've never seen - I'd love to have a chance one day....

Apparently the Aurora Borealis picture was taken in Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada. It is sad to think that something so beautiful can occur and so few of us will ever see it in person. It has been a life long ambition of mine to see them and tried to talk my ex-fiance into taking me to Alaska on honeymoon. I have every intention of seeing it one day.

You and I are like-minded in this respect, it seems! ;) Very occasionally, in times of high solar activity, the aurora pays a visit to us folks in the UK, but I've never caught it (anyway weather in UK is so cr@p these days....).
The other thing on my mind is, of course, I'm still wondering whether I'll ever get a total eclipse in. The number of opportunities open to me, in my remaining years, is dwindling fast .... :'( I passed up on the Turkey opportunity in 2006 (fully expecting it to be a wash-out; those who went had a splendid view). I passed up on Russia/China earlier this month (ditto; ditto). And of course 1999 was a total failure for us (as for many! We pitched up in France and saw nothing). Well, there's China next year. Maybe....

I have absolutley NO sense of direction without refering to maps :-[
-
I have little sense of direction without a map either.
It's handy to know whether the sun (or vaguely the brightest patch of the sky) is a any time of day.
It's a trick I use when trying to work out when the various Google Earth images were captured. (Note gross discontinuity about 100 metres north of My Abode.)

Where's that? Or more importantly, which crag is that?
*thinks*
It's west facing (climbers won't be up early enough to see sunrise), by the sea & it looks like limestone. So, Gower or Pembroke? (Tho there seems to be an island on the horizon, which is slightly confusing.)
-
It's Aillaide in Ireland, County Clare. The Island in the distance is one of the Aran Islands.

Oooh - very graphic, if you know what I mean.
One of the techniques Tony Hart once demonstrated that i managed to reproduce succesfully, despite being dreadfully clumsy artistically, was to create such a scene by alternating layers of cartridge paper torn roughly to shape with sheets of tracing paper, giving a similarly pleasing effect of hills off into the mist.

There's a fake geysir in one of the parks in Reykjavik (near some nice singletrack). The spray from the geysir covers these trees and leaves them encrusted with icicles. I rode through 15cm deep snow to get this photo.

This is the road from Cookham to Maidenhead. The meadow in the first two is to the east of the road with Cliveden on the ridgeline. The third is to the west. This time of year regularly produces mis covered flood meadows. A beautiful sight and one of the reasons I think I am privileged to be able to cycle to work.

A sunset in St Lucia. This one actually won me a prize at the Wolsingham Show (http://www.wolsinghamshow.com/) in 2008 (2nd prize in the "Best Snapshot - any subject" category).
The colours in Pingu's photo reminded me of this one, taken in the slightly less glamorous location of Gants Hill.

Sunsets on Brighton Beach on Sunday. Technically yes, the sun had dipped below the horizon when I took the Bandstand, but just had to include it as the colours are georgous.

Why the f*** isn't there someone, silhouetted, cycling along the surf-line? It would have made every cycling magazine in the world.

Why, thank you for those kind words, sir. Almost makes it worthwhile hanging around on an empty freezing beach for an hour waiting for the sun to set. Help yourself.
If you want to see a cyclist from here your best bet is a very powerful telescope trained on Drummore, on the land on the right edge of the horizon. It's a control on the 8some reel. You would be able to see where it was if they turned the street lamp on.
BTW, it made flickr's Explore i.e. ranked* 262 of all the photos uploaded to flickr on 2nd January. Not bad out of about 7 million.
*using a formula which they won't divulge.

Nice shot David! How long wa the exposure? I presume L-O-N-G...
Long enugh for me to walk up to the castle, fire of the flashguns a bundle of times, (about 10-15 in total with gel changes) then try to find the camera on a tripod on a pitch dark hillside without a torch. So about 3-5 mins. An astronomer would measure the angle of arc for the star trails and tell me..
You can see the failings of the Nikon D80 at long exposure with the sensor noise in the corners.
It was a lot of fun but dragging the kit 1.5 miles uphill along paths I had never seen before was interesting, even more so scaring the green eyed monsters (sheep) on the descent.

Not too impressive compared to some people shots on here, but I do like the clouds in this one. I was experimenting with the EXIF data on my phone, and took this shot to see if it recorded the cameras viewing direction as well as Lat and Long (it doesn't).

New York at sunset, I liked the way that the clouds illuminated by the lights from the buildings. The three below were taken over a period of about twenty minutes, the last to be fair was nearly in the dark! I'm really just a happy snapper, but for me the advantage of a digital camera is that I can play around with the settings just to see what works for the effect I'm looking for.
The below were taken with a Canon 500d, the ISO was at 3200 with the exposure set to darken the image so that the lighting was highlighted (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2594/4098217872_35db86693a_z.jpg?zz=1).

After Christmas lunch we went for a walk and ended up on a rocky outcrop overlooking Pontardawe. As we got there the warm light of the setting sun was lighting up the trees in the valley below, although the snow on the playing fields was in shade.
The land on the right of the river was the site of the steelworks where my nuncio's father-in-law started work in 1950 on the day before his 15th birthday.

Ramsgate, 18th February 2008: this spectacular sunset was visible across most of the UK. The effect was due to unusually low temperatures in the stratosphere causing very high altitude cirrostratus to form. These conditions were at their peak on 18th and the day before.

Thanks fuzzy. I don't think I've ever welcomed a sunrise as much as that one. We'd been up since half past midnight, slogging up loose scree at -10° in 40-50mph winds with only the boots of the person in front visible in the dim light of my headtorch. And although we were fairly well acclimatised by climbing Mt Kenya (strictly speaking Lenana Point) the week before, being at 5000+m asl adds its own difficulties.
But everything changed once the sun came up. To the north I could see Mt Kenya. I've read that Kili-Mt Kenya is the furthest you can see between two points on the earth's surface. I don't know if that's true, but at over 200 miles it shows how clear it was that day at that altitude.
With the sunrise behind me approaching Uhuru Peak (5895m asl, just beyond the figure on the right), with its own shadow on the clouds.

Kilimanjaro 1999 again. Barafu* Camp, 4600 m asl (http://www.mtkilimanjarologue.com/pictures/barafu-camp-picture-2.html). The evening before the summit day. Just as the sun was setting, clouds bubbled up from the floor of the Rift Valley thousands of feet below. It was as if the mountain had conspired with the weather to say "Look, you think you're clever getting this far, but there's still a long way to go, and we can still make it very difficult for you. This is just a show - tomorrow it's the real thing"
As luck would have it, someone was standing silhouetted against the sky, and the tiny figure sums up nicely how insignificant I felt at that moment in the face of the elements.
*barafu is swahili for ice

Taken by David Kaplan. What a fantastic photo! One can well imagine the photographers reaction with everything just 'coming together': the clear sky, the alignment of Venus and the Moon, the beautiful colours and the way the town's lights put a blush on the lowering clouds.

What I think you're trying to say is "No Brits", which is much better when abroad. Probably our 7th time in Portugal, and they are jolly friendly.

Yes - Portugal is our oldest ally. Although I'm not sure why after what we have done to their SE coast ;D

Dunno about the south coast, as we've never 'done' that bit. We're always heading north east of Lisbon (about an hour away) for the surfing duuuuuuuude! (insert nodding smiley). Like, tooooaaaatally dude.

Taken by David Kaplan. What a fantastic photo! One can well imagine the photographers reaction with everything just 'coming together': the clear sky, the alignment of Venus and the Moon, the beautiful colours and the way the town's lights put a blush on the lowering clouds.

You could try asking him Gonzo. Click on his name under the picture, and it jumps to his email reply page for Switzerland. You never know until you ask… as they say.

After some searching, I managed to find the place where he sells his pics. He's after 450 euros for a medium size and over 1000 for a big print! This all seems strange as you can find a very large image here (http://ubersuper.com/go.php?http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/image/1102/moonvenus_kaplan_4255.jpg). Would it make me a bad person if I just went somewhere and got them to print a copy of it directly?

I'll take your word for it, Dean!
-
The sunrise was from a bit higher up, hence the changed angle.
-
I was thinking of you on Sunday as I walked the Lyke Wake walk with my brothers. It took us forever to lose Roseberry Topping, or Rosemary Topping as we know it!
-
Ah, you did the Lyke Wake Walk! I hope you took some photos.
I was telling somebody about Roseberry Topping while walking around Annapurna - it's properly mountain shaped, even if that came about by accident.
-
Dean, PM on the way.

I like that shot, it's got a lot of detail without having lots of lights in buildings, which can be a bit clichéd.
It's also interesting to see they've taken the final crane off of the top of The Shard. I can see it from a few miles away on one road during my commute, but it's been hard to see it clearly recently, so I couldn't clearly see that the'd taken it off.
-
Jeezus, that Shard thing is fugly!
-
That's a fab photo.
It makes the City look mean and brooding, Lord of the Rings stylee.

And there was me thinking that all the shard is missing is an eye between the bits at the top..

There was an unbelievably stunning blood-red sunrise over Brighton this morning. Coupled with the scene of beautiful hoare frost covering the ground and trees around Shoreham with the bruised backdrop of a sky made it jaw-dropping. This was around 7.30am. The pic of the sky (from work) at 7.50am won't really do it justice, and I'll have to post it another time now.
I think you'll find it was much redder in Brighton Boabers …

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned before, but I'm afraid Flight Crew are not allowed on this thread.
For anyone knows - you have the best possible views from Anywhere. And that's just cheating.
And speaking personally, I'd rather you had eyes on the Panel, rather than holding up an iPhone to the Sunset on the approach path ;D.
But... this was sitting in a queueueue on a taxiway with nothing else to do! Not fair!
Yeah Yeah.
#2: Taxi checklist.
TimC: Hang on... (fumbles for phone)
ATC: "After company 737, line up and wait, zero niner Left"
#2: Come ON - taxi checklist
TimC: Hang on - this'll look GREAT on the forum!
#2: OK OK, forget the taxi checklist, pre-takeoff checklist...

Erm you will find that there aren't 12, I think the count is 9. Some of them got tired and went to sleep or walked way.
It look jolly good at sunset I must say, day time a little more boring. Did she go on a helicopter ride there, they kept buzzing above us when we were there.

Apparently 8 these days, some may have converted.
She's doing a road trip atm.

Rotterdam? That's a city that often looks good when you are looking in the opposite direction ;)
(I still remember the defining feature of Rotterdam from the first time I visited (in the 80's) - signs on lamp posts all over showing the distance to the nearest McDonald's, "200m this way-> 150m that way <--" )
-
Rotterdam? No - Felixstowe - The clue was under the photo!

Is that shining through cloud base Tim?
-
We were at 35,000ft, the cloud was a fairly thin layer maybe 5000ft below us. So the level horizon was somewhere above the cloud you see there, but the earth horizon somewhere below the sun (obvs!). It's quite a significant zoom; maybe 20x?

Thanks Tim.

".... and then, with an almost inaudible hiss, the bikes slid gracefully below the surface: ET and his mermaid friend W.ET were going home."
Lovely pictures, Jaded - especially the third. Is that a cormorant in the middle one? It looks a little un-crucifix-like, so maybe a Greater Black Backed Gull?
Thanks, anyway! We had an absolute belter here in the NW yesterday but I couldn't find the camera!

Tanks Peter :)
Here is a different frame of the bird, I was focussed on the islands in the distance. Looks gull like to me!

did anyone who looked at the sunset last night look behind themselves and spotted the moon? Sadly I didn't have a camera with me, and taking snaps of the moon still isn't in my skill set. The moon was dark orange into the red, stunning.

Driving back from the not-very-frozen North to That London yesterday was the first time I'd ever needed to use the sun visor at night. Fellow volunteer Ina was complaining bitterly about how her phone camera wasn’t good enough to get a decent picture.

The people who live on the near side of Barsalloch Point get wonderful sunsets over the sea in the winter, but as the winter turns to spring, the sun sets further north, and by mid-April it sets behind the heugh. So they won't have seen this last week.
Right on the promontory, looking down on the point, there are iron age earthworks known as Barsalloch Fort. There are several advantages to building there - easily defensible and close to the sea for food and transport. But I'm convinced that they settled there because you get good sunsets the whole year round. I'm sure our ancestors enjoyed a good sunset as much as we do.
-
Wasn't sure if this should be in Panoramas or here. It's a year old.
