I've been on their eMail list for a couple of years, but I just realised I had 8 weeks to take advantage of their business model: distributing wines at local Portuguese prices within the EU https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/
Basically, shipping adds on slightly less than £1 bottle so something like this (https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/vinho-verde/10173-adega-de-moncao-white-2019-5601531118124.html) is £4, which I reckon stacks up against £7-8 bought locally quite happily, this (https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/douro/6801-cadao-red-2018-5601247031120.html) for the red, probably more for example. I ordered 5 cases, from order to delivery was 2 weeks, in line with the original info.
Does help to know something about Portuguese wines, but you can't go too far wrong.
-
Yes , I've had several cases of excellent wine from them. The last order took about a week to arrive.
Order while you can >:(
-
Oh that does look good. What wine is worth ordering?
Also, port. Too much choice and no idea.

Mariposa Red 2015
6,25 €

Quinta do Covão Selected Harvest Red 2015
7,85 €
Messias Selection Unoaked Douro Red 2015
5,85 €
Dom Diogo Arinto White 2018
5,05 €
Pequenos Rebentos Alvarinho Trajadura White 2019
5,55 €
My last order. I think the Mariposa & the Quinta were thee best of the reds, and I wish I'd ordered more of the white.
Hmmmm ... from 2019
This place has very good prices for Portuguese wines. The following are all made by the chap who did yours.https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/search?orderby=price&orderway=asc&search_query=carlos+eduardo&submit_search=Search&p=2 (https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/search?orderby=price&orderway=asc&search_query=carlos+eduardo&submit_search=Search&p=2)I enjoyed this from M&S https://www.marksandspencer.com/quinta-de-fafide-estate-reserva-case-of-6/p/p21127281 (https://www.marksandspencer.com/quinta-de-fafide-estate-reserva-case-of-6/p/p21127281) and found the same stuff a lot cheaper on that site. https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/wines/4635-quinta-de-fafide-reserve-red-2016-5609851524007.html?search_query=Quinta+de+Fafide&results=6 (https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/wines/4635-quinta-de-fafide-reserve-red-2016-5609851524007.html?search_query=Quinta+de+Fafide&results=6)

My recommendation is slightly different from andrewc, that is, unless you know what you are ordering, max out at €5 euro a bottle and don't be afraid of the 2 - 3 € stuff. The white I linked to above is extraordinarily nice, much fruitier and fuller than the normal vinho verde and a personal favourite when I discovered Moncao, cycling through during their wine festival week. Duoro is very sound for reds, especially if you want to spend more money on a bottle, and Dao for satisfying quaffing. I don't think you will go far wrong with any of their wines, the prices you see are those you find in the supermarkets in Portugal for everyday wines.
Port? Where to start. If you haven't, try a white port, they are drier and make a great aperitif. Colehita port is another gem rarely seen outside portugal - think of it as a Tawny on steroids. My own go-to for port tends to be LBV for convenience and price, and the cheapest LBV on the site (https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/lbv-port/1743-messias-lbv-port-2013-5601292173318.html) looks to be a bargain.
Have a look at Majestic Portugal selection (https://www.majestic.co.uk/search.htm?searchText=&filterCategory=Wines&filterWineCountry=Portugal&sortWines=ascprice&pageSize=36&view=Products&layoutType=list&pageNum=0) - the white I was talking about is at least as good as the Cazas Novas @ £10.
-
Re Majestic .... the Vidigal Porta 6 has been our house red for years since celebrity chef (and cyclist hater) James Martin recommended it on one of his TV programmes. This is now available in Sainsbury's, occasionally for under a fiver. The Porta 6 reserva is £9.99 (mix six) and is a worthwhile step up. Sadly Sainsbury's do not stock this.
I am thinking of getting a case which will include some P6 reserva and some of the Quinta do Pinto which one of my local restaurants have at £39 and £49 a bottle which seem to correspond to the two on offer at Portugal Vineyards.
I will (have to) include some whites. Thanks for the suggestion re the white.
-
The grape varieties of the Porto 6 Riserva identify it as a Duoro, so looking on the Portugal website I'd choose this (https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/douro/4001-adega-de-vila-real-colheita-red-2018-5602079053908.html) as an equal and this (https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/douro/4009-castello-dalba-red-2018-5609851521839.html) as a beater.
While we're at it, if anyone likes a bottle of sweetie, the Duoro moscatel (https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/144-douro) or the Setubal (https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/145-setubal) version, for that matter) is very worth chucking into the basket.
ETA, while I'm at it the standard Porto 6 grapes identify it as a Lisboa, probably, so I would point to this (https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/lisboa/4418-mil-caminhos-red-5600206949179.html) rough equivalent
EATA: haha - if I'd have looked at the Majestic page for Porto 6 I would have read "Lisbon". Nice to know I got it right ;D ;D
-
I remember having some nice red port in Lisbon years ago that wasn't overly sweet and sticky but have no idea what it was...
-
Possibly a ruby port? That's another you tend not to see over here, they tend to be less sweet.
-
What I need is a tasting kit!
-
I have been spending TOO MUCH time on that site. Here you are https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/tawny-port/4358-caves-messias-5-classic-port-wines-5601292180668.html
-
I had spotted the Quinto do Noval selection which is a bit dearer at €12.35, thank you :)
-
Right, done. You're a bad influence, you are :P
-
Bastard.
The last thing i need is a website offering really nice Tawny Port, Colheita and Madeira.
-
The cheapest wine I bought was vinho verde at about €2.50 each. Even if it's shit it'll be ok for cooking at that price...
-
So I am thinking of making an order for a few reds. What would you recomend.
-
Oh my. You've not given me any parameters, so I'll stick to less than €5, smooth drinking with flavour
So, trying to avoid selecting for myself (although obviously there is an element of that)
Duoro & Dao typically have character, in a classic french manner.
this Dao looks well worth the money (made by the same people who do the Porto 6 - which you can get, too) https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/dao/4196-vidigal-dao-red-2017-5601996550118.html
Duoro stuff
https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/douro/6801-cadao-red-2018-5601247031120.html
This one I'd expect to be a bit more new worldly https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/douro/4003-adega-de-vila-real-reserve-red-2016-5602079055100.html
I've bought some of these as a meal quaffing wine, haven't tried it yet
https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/douro/11802-cara-a-cara-superior-red-2018-5600752489105.html
Looking for "softer" wines? drop down to Alentejo. I confess, I don't know that much about them, but I doubt you'll get a duff bottle. Expect easy drinking.
This looks like a good example https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/alentejo/9482-loios-red-2019-5604135001144.html

Adega Mayor Reserve Red 2017
there are many great wines
probably will make another order before the Brexit
-
I should add that my basic familiarity with Portuguese wine (I claim no more) was the one good result of my shit-for-brains BiL retiring there (they are back now).
-
Two cases of vin ordinaire, as recommended above, duly ordered so we will see. I wish I had known about this site when the pound was worth 1.46 euros.
-
I got a £5 voucher because you placed that order. Now I'll have to buy some more :P
-
I am getting very tempted. You lot are a bad influence.
-
I got a £5 voucher because you placed that order.
How does that work?
-

They have a "refer a friend" scheme. I think I mentioned this site to people over a year ago & sent Canardly the details.
-
Yes you provide a referral email adress when ordering for the first time. They also give the person ordering a fiver off the next order.
-
Someone should have said when I was ordering. Mine has left Barcelona apparently. Excited to try something new for a change...
-
I am going to place an order with them. So if any of you who already have ordered want a refer a friend voucher DM me and I'll give you my Email address.

Same here, I reckon I can get a couple of orders in before the end of the year (a mixed taster order and then stock up on the preferred results). Send me a message if you want my email for "refer a friend"
-
Our Christmas wine has arrived.
We’ve had to taste it....
-
Three cases ordered. Pity its the last chance before Brexit does its thing.
-
2 cases arrived yesterday, 1 today :)
-
Still waiting here, seems to have left Barcelona two days ago (Why Barc?) I am hoping to get another order in before the end of the year. They are providing short delivery dates for some wines.
-
I got no update between it leaving Barcelona and turning up at my doorstep a few days later.
-
They have arrived! I did get an email last night and one hour's warning today. There will be a tasting later.
-
Being suitably impressed I snuck another quick order in for delivery in the middle of December. Probably the last chance to do so.
-
You got through the first order so quickly.... :P
-
Has anyone tried pink port? I know it not.
-
No. White and red, both of which I can recommend ;D
-
We tried a pink port last winter. Not terribly impressed. Rather sweeter than we like.
-
Has anybody discovered any great new wines in their recent purchases?
-
I bought Monte Baixo Vinho Verde White 2019. I wouldn't particularly particularly recommend it, it's not subtle, but at €2.65 a bottle it's drinkable (just).
Tonight we are on Cadão Red 2018 which is not as fulsome and fruity as Cotes du Rhone but it's very drinkable and at €3.25 beggars can't be choosers. Would have again.
Will report when I've tried the others,
-
Nothing great in there but all reasonable and quite drinkable at good prices. Some has been used for cooking. I have yet to find a great wine at affordable price levels and having lived sur le continent I have tried lots of em via Delhaize, direct from the Vinyard and other 'upmarket' supermarche. French friends however always seem to turn up to meetings with bottled nectar. German wines are good fun and inexpensive (or they were then). Pure serendipity but Aldi have a 2018 Dao in stock atm and it is really very good, being silky smooth at £5.99 a bottle. I have some Dao 2017 and Porta 6 on order. We will see. This is fun.
Note: A few years ago we asked a local wine merchant for his suggestion at a tenner a bottle. It was vinaigrette crap, appallingly bad. We have never been back since.
-
latest order, all reds
Porta da Ravessa Reserve Red 2018 x6
Monte do Roseiral Syrah Merlot Reserve Red 2018 x2
Monte da Ravasqueira Red 2019 x4
the Porta da Ravessa is under a fiver and enjoyable
-
You got through the first order so quickly.... :P
We haven't supped it all, though we are trying our best. I wanted to get a delivery in before Christmas. The Brexit curtain is about to descend but otherwise I would seriously consider their top Portugese 'cru' wines offer of 6 bottles normally costing more than 20 euros ea. for £100, to store for a special occasion.
-
3 cases just arrived. I'm glad I bought that stair climbing shopping trolley , you can take the bag off & use it as a little flatbed. Better than carrying the stuff up to the 4th floor...
-
Tonight (yes I know it's a school night but Pingu is off) we are on Fafide Duoro Reserva Tinto 2019.
Again, despite Vivino users scoring it as 'bold' it's nowhere near as bold as a CDR but again very quaffable. Bit bo.der than the Cadao we had last night. This is the most expensive of the selection I bought, at 4.95 Euro a bottle.
-
Tonights meal was cold roast beef (food parcel from my mother), Lyonnaise potatoes and carrots. The crate of Cadao was breached & it's certainly drinkable. I wouldn't rave over it but for the price you can't complain.
-
Yay my wine arrived today.
-
Tried two so far out of my selection that were very nice.
Then we have the Tr3s Castas red.
I opened one bottle and then chucked it as I thought it was corked. Second bottle is just the same. Has a slightly fizzy mouth feeling.
Anyone else tried this one ? Its only 10% proof.
Its a Vinho Verde. Are the reds supposed to be slightly sparking? Sparkling red is a new idea to me.

Probably secondary fermentation. Does it taste somewhat like apple sauce?
-
Is the term not 'petillant'? In French at least.
Wish I'd found this site earlier... https://thewinedetective.co.uk/
-
Did some digging on the internet.
Its supposed to be slightly effervescent and have a sour undertone. So it's not corked its supposed to be like that. That's what you get for picking random wine :) Apparently in the UK you normally only get the white version.
Gave it a try with a cheese and cold meat platter. Once you get over the initial surprise its actually quite good. Which is good since it was a minimum six bottle purchase. And at £2 a bottle I can live with the fact that I chucked one bottle down the drain thinking it was corked.
-
I'm planning a Portuguese Camino next year (Covid permitting). The route starts in Porto and winds it's way through the Vinho Verde region of Portugal, before hitting Galicia and one of my favourite grapes, Mencia .... *hic*
-
Running out of white wine I might try a last order, I need recommendations for white.
I had this, and while it was very cheap it showed https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/vinho-verde/6119-monte-baixo-vinho-verde-white-2019-5601660972178.html
I generally like nice dry wines like Reisling, Gruner Veltlinger, Sauv Blanc, Albarino etc
Recommendations from Portugal Vinyards welcome!
-
Your wine choices are the same as Mrs Ham (she also detests oaked wines), she really enjoyed this (https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/vinho-verde/8403-adega-cooperativa-de-barcelos-white-5602886000034.html) vinho verde. You'd be unlikely to be disappointed by Tras os Montes (https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/39-white-wine?q=Region-Tr%C3%A1s--os--Montes), I wine I tended to reach for when choosing for Mrs Ham in Portugal (it's basically a Duoro), but as it is on the slightly pricier end I didn't have any in my recent order. Looooads of Alvarinho grape - this (https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/vinho-verde/10173-adega-de-moncao-white-2019-5601531118124.html) recommended upthread is a good'un, here's the "pure" alvarinho search https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/39-white-wine?q=Varieties-Alvarinho
-
It won't let me place an order, when I get to 'shipping' it says 'There is no carrier available. Check back soon if we are already delivering to your destination.'
:'(
-
"There is no carrier available. Check back soon if we are already delivering to your destination."
Fuck Boris,
-
Well I must say the Dao 2017 is rather nice and the Porta 6 is yummy. Both from the same winemaker in the country of our oldest ally. We must be mad.
-
Did anyone else follow my suggestion of the Moscatel? I went for this (https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/douro/9946-encostas-do-peso-moscatel-do-douro-5601176002659.html) which turned out to be an absolute winner.
-
I bought Águia Moura White 2019 which was very drinkable, and
Cadão Red 2018 which we haven't yet opened on account of being given some reds for Christmas.
-
They are starting shipping again, but it is going to be more expensive...
e.g.
One of our best sellers to the UK market, the Vidigal Porta 6, before the BREXIT at 3.60 GBP plus shipping, it will be now 3.19 GBP plus 2.23 GBP excise and 20% VAT tax, so a total of 6.50 GBP per bottle.
The shipping cost is the same in terms of transport cost but it takes per order an extra fee of 9.79 GBP for the exportation customs dispatch so it means that if you buy more than one case of 12 bottles, you will save money since it’s a flat fee per order and not per case.
In the end a bottle of Vidigal Porta 6 that in the past was around 4.7 GBP with all taxes and shipping included, will be now between 7 and 8 GBP depending on the number of bottles ordered.
This information is very important because if a client refuses to pay the importation duties, the parcels will return to us and we will have to deduct the return costs to the value paid for the order.
The transit time to the UK is not yet stable because there are some delays in the customs clearance but this means also that some parcels can reach you without the payment of the local duties and taxes.
-
Ah return of the booze cruise to Calais. At least eurotunnels woes might be eased in due course.
-
Not really, there are personal allowances 24 bottles of wine, etc.
It is now a total of:
42 litres of beer and
18 litres (24 standard 75 cl bottles) of still wine and
4 litres of spirits OR 9 litres (12 bottles) of sparkling wine, fortified wine or any alcoholic beverage less than 22% alcohol
-
I got that email today too, very good of them to explain it so clearly. A big % increase in price but still not tremendously expensive per bottle. (Goes off to study the Quinto do Noval port prices....)
-
Also, are they saying at the end of that email, 'chance your arm now and you might get your order cheap while the UK customs system is in a state of omnishambles'?
-
Certainly sounds like it.....
-
Just had a delivery of Porta 6 reserve with no apparent difficulties. Transport significantly more expensive than hitherto but no additional charges this time out. However, charges could well apply in April. Not sure how the 24 bottles of still wine duty free allowance affects on line orders, if at all.
-
I was going to ask if anyone had been brave enough to order recently....
-
... Porta 6 reserve ...
That's a favourite of mine. How many did you buy? What did it work out at per bottle?

AFAIAA duty free allowance only applies to accompanied goods
-
A fraction over 7 euros a bottle.
-
Has anyone ordered recently ? I finished my last delivery at the weekend.
-
No, but they have been very busy with marketing emails, which suggests:
- they are missing the business
- it's not that hard to deliver to the UK

Reading the comments, the majority of British people still don't seem to understand anything about Brexit.
