Good thread !

If nothing else, it will get everyone scouring their bikes looking for possible causes of catastrophic failure, which has to be good.

Oh yes, reminds me, the famous "Condor Crack" caused by too short a shim in the seat tube of some of their frames:

The (ex) Condor Tempo (it was stolen before I spoke to Condor about getting a replacement frame. The insurance company paid out for an entire replacement bike.)

You show me yours and I'll show you mine....
VN Aeolus fail August 2012
Several months of dry weather creaking, and feeling a bit 'spongy' when delivering grunt, led to this.
Eventually replaced under VN's warranty.

And lo! Today's picture (and story)

That'll make them sit up and pay attention in Sainsbury's car park.
The original (I suspect) rim on the rear of the Pompino I bought from Thing 1 last year.
I've had 9 months worth of commuting on it, Thing 1 - who knows how many years.....
Trust me when I tell you that it was a loud bang.

Funny thing is, I was thinking that the rims were looking a bit worn, so last Tuesday I ordered a pair of Goldtec Pro track hubs from BETD, and on Friday I went to Brick Lane Bikes and came away with a pair of Velocity Deep V rims.....

Mercifully, as I was laden with toothy comestibles, my speed was akin to walking pace.
Prior to leaving home, I felt the tyres and thought them to be a little soft. I put 7bar into each.
The journey on my way to the emporium includes a descent on which my RPM usually maxes out. As it did today.
I think I can count myself lucky.

Did I mention it was a loud bang?

I spent weeks (possibly months  :-[ ) riding around trying to track down the source of a creak on my Pompino. Finally I spotted it....

It nearly went far enough around to meet itself coming the other way

I wonder what would happen if your chain snapped when powering along at 20mph and then the split link jammed in your rear mech?  This maybe:

I've tried that too, no pictures though. Did your rear wheel lock up too ?

Another chain ripping the rear mech off at 28mph as I crossed the finish line on a TT a couple of years ago - ruined the frame and rear Kysrium wheel (spokes bent & rim split) as well as the mech.

I suspect the bearings popped out of newly fitted jockey wheels, but can't prove it.  >:(

I had similar a couple of weeks ago, bouncing along a rough road. Mech hanger broken, spokes broken, mech cage bent, gouge in seat stay, chain links bent.
New mech hanger fitted, new spokes fitted and wheel trued thanks to otherdave, awaiting replacement mech from YACFer, fingers crossed for seat stay, new chain fitted.
So, MercuryKev, Gus and Wobbly John, any idea what causes this catastrophe?  ???

If you look at the lower jockey wheel (the top one in my photo), the plastic bit has separated from the bearing. I think this is how the chain wrapped round the side of the mech ripping it off.

Note, this was an old Ultegra/600 rear mech where the inner 'cage' does not enclose the jockey wheel on the inside.

I'd only fitted the jockey wheels the previous week.  >:(

Post by: MercuryKev on 28 July, 2013, 11:37:33 pm
In my case a chainlink came away at the pin and this link than jammed into the read mech.  This then cause the rear mech to be drawn backwards and up into the rear wheel.  The result was one totalled rear mech and really bent rear hanger - steel frame so in effect one pretty compromised frame as the hangar was bent and twisted.  And yes the rear wheel locked up and I skidded to a halt in front of a bus.

I damaged a lovely Pinarello Sestriere a few years ago in a submerged pothole. My friend, who looked after it as I went to hospital told me upon its return, "check your brakes, I think they're rubbing"

Broken Rohloff, 2008.

The most obvious crack is at 12 o'clock, and that lump of flange is ready to part company from the hub, but there were 7 visible cracks when that photo was taken, all emanating from the trailing spokes on the non-drive side. Two others, at 3 o'clock and 4'oclock (ish) are visible in the photo.

We have been operating our current hub quite successfully and without incident for 3 or 4 years now.

So, if anyone's interested in how thin the braking surface on a rim needs to be before it'll yield to 7bar and this (https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=74335.msg1531328#msg1531328) happens.....
It's somewhere between 0.67 and 0.81 of a mm.
That's the readings I'm getting at the point where the rim separates into two

Mavic Aksium rear wheel, they were 4 years old but only did around 150 miles from new, set off on a ride and it just gave up, lucky I was not too far from home and was able to walk back.

The new wheels have a lot more metal around the spokes so I suspect they had a few failures.

Tuesday afternoon and a bloke brings in a GT Chucker. Apparently I've told his lad that I'll replace the BB for 25 quid.

He also brought the remains of the chainset - which looked like it had been used as a prop in the 'Anvil Chorus'. The square taper more, sort of, wasn't. Square or tapered. Mullered is probably the best description. 'Someone' had tried to remove the BB with a chisel and succeeded in snapping half of the driveside cup off so fitting a splined tool had become impossible. They had also managed to chew up the frame which, being alloy, couldn't be heated to assist in the BB removal.

Honestly, it's the first time I have looked someone straight in the eye and refused to work on their bike. Not even the wheels were salvageable.

Cleaning it the other day, I noticed the mudguard bridge looked a bit rusty below the paint.  It was not exactly smooth prior to getting the re-spray.
I prodded it lightly with a screwdriver and it just collapsed. The rot looks confined to this bridge.  What to do ? (I had noticed the handling wasnt exactly secure on fast bumpy downhills any more, perhaps co-incidence)

If it's rare & exotic then it may be worth visiting [insert framebuilder of choice] for a renovation, if it's a common or garden gate steel frame then look for a replacement a powder coater anna can of waxoyl.

Our very own Bicycle Repair Man would be the man to consult . . .

A Shimano HF08 tandem hub:

The nice and fortunate thing is that you can ride for quite a long way with a hub in this condition.
