Id say with the new EU travel directives for the Summer. TCR is almost certainly a go. Best dial in the tapering QG. Hopefully see you in Brest.

I wonder how it's going to work. I'm not expecting to be fully vaccinated in time. I'm hoping for 1 dose at least. Will we need a PCR to cross each border?

It is not clear how long a pcr test will be valid for but the eu are saying pcr tests will be free for citizens that have not been able to be vaccinated. It might add another aspect to route planning.

A little muddled and as usual, subject to possible changes but here:-  Don't be put off by the title it goes on to elaborate on non fully vaccinated.

This is very encouraging.  I wonder if there will still be any sort of quarantine?  Would be good to know soon to organise, travel, etc.

According to the eu green certificate thingy is you have your qr code showing vaccination or testing status there will not normally be any quarantine.

Not if the country is on the green list to be announced on Friday and updated every 3 weeks. Orange quarantine at home. Red quarantine at her majesty’s pleasure.

Sat down for an hour of route fettling. I now have three routes for the ports to the finish. Each with varying degrees of climbing involved. Also rather pleased to reduce the climb on my route from CP3 to CP4 by nearly 2700m. While reducing the distance by 5km too.

It's all starting to get very real.

Yup Greece there is bumpy AF. Also that Appenine part of Italy seems bumpy AF.  The trip East  through hthe Alps to the goat tracks above Stelvio appears to be bumpy AF.  I will inevitably get horribly lost at some point in a gravel strewn area that's bumpy AF
Ah well, all good training for TPR later in the year that's.......
Thank goodness for the sub compact this time round.

Most countries of the world have requirements to prove you have a return ticket, accommodation and financial means for your stay. It is only if they think you are dodgy do they ever ask.

If France decide to start being silly then fully refundable hotel bookings are available and much easier than the paperwork providing proof you are staying with friends.

yesterdays Giro stage took some likely possible routing for the journey from the Stelvio to CP4 in the Appenines.
The diabolical mountain weather was also a great advert for fitting mudguards.

Todays route has some of my planned route to CP4... The bit along the coast.

He was doing ever so well till he went beyond the basic facts.

Having travelled to a couple of dozen non-EU countries, most of them on a bike and without a definite agenda, it's worth saying that countries requiring confirmed accommodation for every night, proof of itinerary etc is

1) Pretty common
2) Nowhere near universal
3) Observed with widely varying levels of strenuousness.

There are lots of countries that will let you in without a hotel booking for every night, so it's not an inevitable consequence of leaving the EU, though the Schengen zone does have harsh border checks at its borders, in exchange for allowing you to travel between 26 countries visa-free once you're in.  Of countries that do require this sort of thing, some don't really care, some want you to make some tokenistic effort (e.g. in Japan, mentioning a friend's house at the border and being evasive as to quite how long I intended to stay there), and some (e.g. China if you want to cycle) require you to make an entire fake itinerary using refundable bookings sites.

If France want to behave like China, it's up to them but it isn't a good look.  I highly doubt it'll turn out like that though.

But we'll know for sure by next Friday

Hi all - longtime reader here, first time poster  :)

I agree Anna's email today left me a bit less confident but the Covid testing should hopefully not be a major issue:

France: PCR test will be completed before the start so no race delay

Italy: from what I understand Italy accepts rapid lateral flow tests which are free and fast https://www.medicspot.co.uk/covid-test/italy

Greece: it looks like you can get PCR tests in Bari 7 days/week for €62 with results in a few hours https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g187874-i799-k13395860-Covid_test_in_Bari_for_traveling_to_Greece-Bari_Province_of_Bari_Puglia.html

I've not yet been vaccinated so will need testing but I don't mind losing a few hours in Bari (or a day, or whatever it takes) if that means the race can go ahead this year, rather than staring at maps trying to find another underwhelming backup plan for the summer.

Stay safe, hope to see you all in Brest
Jamie

Thanks for the feedback Jamie.
I must confess that when the email arrived today I started reading it thinking that the event would be a "go" with the opening up of Europe that's been announced in the press recently. I was a little taken aback when reading on.  I'm a little out of the loop on events over in Europe while living on this small rock the last 2 years in  the Truman Show part 2.
I can see Anna's conundrum though. She is the very epitome of "fair" and its a minefield that she has to negotiate.. I trust her implicitly to make the hard calls and will respect whatever that  decision may be.
I have been double vaxed and would happily race under whatever the regs are. I also appreciate, though, that others haven't and in a race that guides itself on the fundamental principles of fair play and equality it may be deemed to be unsolvable.
What will be will be. Heres hoping that we all meet in Brest, and if not then at a place and time yet TBC.

I don't understand the "fairness" problem: the Olympics goes ahead even when a nation stops hundreds of athletes from competing (Russia/USA in the 80s).
Denmark are still the winners of the Euro footy when Yugoslavia were excluded.
This is a bike ride first, isn't it?
