Hailsham 300: Late Entry?
« on: 10 April, 2011, 10:37:10 pm »
This event is next Saturday and AUKweb says that entries are closed.  Were I to post off an entry to Dave Hudson tomorrow (Monday) 1st class, what are my chances of getting a ride?

Slim. I hear Dave Hudson's a bit of a stickler for such things.

Do it.  Dave's normally very helpful.  I'd put a covering note in too, explain the circumstances that lead to the late entry.  Don't forget the first class stamp on the envelope for the route sheet.

But do not try for an entry on the line.

I have a friend who, due to a monumental planning cock-up, DNS'd the Invicta at the weekend so is also writing a begging note to El Supremo.  I hope he's feeling charitable  :)
Why should anybody steal a watch when they can steal a bicycle?

IMBW but I've heard it's full (although this may be based on the auto-event close date on the new website)

Post it first class now. You might be OK.

Dave is a good bloke and puts an awful lot into organising Audax events but don't take the mickey, he's got quite enough on his plate without you making it worse. Having said that, he can be extraordinarily accommodating. If I were in your position, I would post it today, first class (or maybe even pay a fortune to get a courier to get that entry to him today). Do bear in mind that this weekend he is running not one but three events - the 3am start from Hailsham 300k and the 6am start from Hailsham 300k and then Le Tour de Didling 100k starting from Midhurst at 8.30am. He'll be feeding all these events, somehow, as well. I'm not sure how he'll manage that, but I do hope he will manage it - because I'm in Le Tour de Didling.........
Besides, it wouldn't be audacious if success were guaranteed.

My nice, handwritten begging letter was posted half an hour ago, saying that I'd prefer the 3am but will do the 6am if it's got more space.  Let's see what happens.

The limit was 250 riders for each event so that's a lot of food if it is full!

El has a shiny brand new van and a huge trailer :o. That, the oven, the gazebo and the chairs all make for a fine feed stop ;D. He'll have worked it all out to a T. Or a tea :D. It's not for nothing he's known as El Supremo, y'know .

That's excellent news, now let's get planning.  Assuming the AUK page is accurate and there's no sleeping accomodation at the start, has anyone booked a twin room in Hailsham that they'd like to split?  Otherwise I'll get a bed at Eastbourne youth hostel, is anybody staying there?

definitely no sleeping at the start; we look suspicious enough as it is (and I've been stopped by the Polis before to ask where the rides started as they often get forlorn cyclists riding and driving round lost at silly o clock)

Alfriston YH is a better bet; you often go straight past it on his events (not this one though) so easy to find a quiet route to the start from there;

The A22 from Eastbourne I would not wish on anybody especially at 0200

I can't vouch for all the lanes, but the controls are the same.   Shouldn't be as cold overnight this time.

Not this Martin. I'm not doing it. (Did the Invicta 300k) While you are doing that, I shall be relaxing on Le Tour De Didling. Three feeds!
