Not actually a YACF thing, but since there's some overlap, the ALC are going to Hayfield that weekend... http://lightweightcampers.org.uk/hayfield-peak-dist-apr-17/

Keep on keeping on!

We are booked in there for 5 nights
Are you a member of the C+CC?

Mrs. Wow and I are members of the C & CC.

It just so happens that our wedding anniversary falls on 17th April, as it does every year, curiously enough. This year will be our 41st.

We are very fond of Hayfield, despite Arthur Lowe having lived there. We have stayed in the Lantern Pike Inn (Little Hayfield) on several occasions. This was Mrs. Wow's stomping ground when on family afternoons out as a small child.

Go on, go on, go on!

We will be in Hayfield that weekend, obviously and we'd love to see any other C & CC members out. It's very cheap when we camp as a rally  :D

I suppose that, as an Association of Lightweight Campers, it might be frowned upon if we took a very large tent in a car...

Nothing wrong with using a car.  It's all about the tent.

I am formulating a plan which involves getting a train to Stalybridge, spending a night with Mrs. Wow's sister at the Family Seat and then pottering over the hills via minor roads/sustrans routes. It isn't that far from Stalybridge to Hayfield - probably about 12 miles, says he without actually plotting a route.

Not a Member, yet. Is it extra cost for the ALC bit? I assume I'd need to be a paid up member for the Hayfield meet, I might be able to find the joining fee in a few weeks so watch this space.

ALC is an extra £6. You're allowed to join a meet if you are a C+CC member though.
I'd need to know in advance if anyone wants to join us as we only have a set amount booked.

Book us in please Rich. This will be Jan's first small tent venture since our ill-(midge)fated trip to Mull 3 years ago. However, if she finds it utterly intolerable she has a sister 13 bike miles away with a perfectly decent bungalow to escape to! We are C & CC members. Quite happy to pay the extra £6 for the ALC element.

Put me down too.  Not sure about barakta, as she isn't really rated for lightweight tents, but she has a mother about 6 miles away with a perfectly good bungaloid.  We are members of that there ALC.

You don't need to pay the extra to camp with us but you can join the section if you so wish.
You get a small mag and great rally rates at all our meets.
The fee for this meet is only £8 per tent per night.

We have a meet booked most months this year, have a look at lightweightcampers.org.uk to see the list.
Hampshire, Lancashire, Yorkshire, Somerset, Oxfordshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and Kent to name a few  ;D ;D

Put me down too.

Will do also

I just spoke to Jan's sister about potentially using her bungalow as a bolt hole, but she won't be there - she has decided to join us camping in Hayfield!

This should be very amusing...

Edit: hey, Pedaldog, sorry to hijack your thread like this, but I definitely think you ought to be there now!

Our plans are currently in a state of flux. Jan has had a rotten cold for over a week and her asthma is playing her up, especially when horizontal. Subjecting herself to a cold, clammy tent does not seem to be especially wise. I think there will be a representation from our party, but whether it ends up being just me is yet to be decided.

OK. Jan was intending to stay at home whilst I whisked her younger sister away for a camping weekend. But - younger sister says "Come anyway and Jan can stay with me in the house!" Which is something akin to what I put a few posts back. Even after all these years I don't think Clare trusts me (says he, twirling his moustache and pouring two large glasses of madeira...)

So. The latest plan is for Jan and me to set off on Wednesday and make for Dukinfield. Our older daughter wants us to spend some time en route at Hardwick Hall, where we are to take photographs for some activity she is devising for the history curriculum. We will spend Wednesday night with Clare and then my intention is to cycle with full camping gear the 13 or so miles from Dukinfield to Hayfield using this route:

http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php?lnk=http://peter.chesspod.com/routes/sk16hayfield.gpx

Jan and Clare can then join us during the day if we are intending to do exciting things, like walking up Kinder.

Apart from the joy of camping, does anyone have any particular plans? I am intending to bring my Thorn with me and no bike for Jan at the moment, unless she has a change of heart and fancies a bit of electric tandemming. I don't think Clare is anything of a cyclist but does like a bit of hill walking.
Title: Re: Celebration
Post by: Kim on 11 April, 2017, 12:06:59 am
I'm being cautious Achilles-wise on this one.  Things seem to be going reasonably well from a cycling perspective (190km last week, albeit no more than 45km in a go), but my walking stamina is low and this weekend is primarily going to be an experiment in how well it stands up to camping (crouching and standing around being a known problem, and somewhat unavoidable where small tents are involved), with a view to surviving the Long Itch tour in May.

So in the interests of being able to stop making things worse if it objects, I'll be coming by car.  I'm planning to stick my mountain bike in the back, on the basis that I keep ending up in Disley with a Brompton, going for a ride because there's non-Birmingham scenery, and inevitably end up comedy off-roading and/or zooming down hills at speeds in excess of R17 swearing about how I should have brought something with proper brakes.

Barakta will be mostly visiting her mum, but I may fetch her for a bit to say hello if plans make sense.

We're not planning to bring the bikes with us.

I am struggling to get my camping gear organised. We still have TPCs from Phyllis's bungalow and they are, very largely, occupying space that used to be dedicated to TPCs of camping gear. My lovely warm Stormlite sleeping bag is quite important to me on an early-season camping trip as I can get my shoulders in it. Trouble is, I can't find it.

Title: Re: Celebration
Post by: Wowbagger on 12 April, 2017, 09:42:17 am
OK, we aren't travelling up today. This was the intention when the history syllabus demanded that we photograph Hardwick Hall, which we are no longer required to do. Haven't ruled out tomorrow yet, but...

1. I am struggling to find my camping kit, especially my lovely warm Stormlite sleeping bag. This is because the house is full of TPCs and much of the camping gear has been buried under an avalanche of knitted and crocheted things which have been the fruit of my wife's needles over many years, even though they have nowhere to go. This avalanche was caused by Dez clearing out another room quite a few months ago. This can be remedied by buying more camping kit, but see TPCs above.

2. Jan has had a rotten cold for a couple of weeks and her asthma is giving her a lot of difficulty at night. Not staying in a tent seems like a good idea, and of course Clare's bungalow is only 13 miles away.

3. I have been on the verge of getting a cold for about 6 or 7 weeks and it seemed to be developing properly yesterday evening. Now it has gone away again.

4. Clare phoned. We were to be giving her a lift dahn sarf next week so that she could visit a family friend (Anne) in Eastbourne, a lady who has cancer. This was all to be timed around her chemotherapy sessions, one of which was planned or this week. That was postponed and lady in question decided to return to Stalybridge in order to do something with her late parents' bungalow and to give Clare a lift back to Eastbourne herself ( ::-)). (Clare drives, but refuses to go on motorways or any distance out of her local area). Given that this would undoubtedly put us into contact with Anne, two people with nagging throat infections are not ideal company for someone on chemotherapy.

5. In the night my right knee has decided, for no apparent reason, to become extremely painful. I suspect that by this time tomorrow it will be behaving as though butter wouldn't melt in its mouth.

So that's where we are. Sarfend, for the moment.

Tomorrow is looking as though it's on. I am intending to camp, with car. Jan will be staying with Clare and they will be visiting as and when. Off out to buy stuff in a tick.

Jan and I will set off tomorrow. The plan is for us to make straight for the campsite where I will pitch my tent and Clare will join us for a meal later we hope, and then take Jan back.

Anyone else for a pub dinner?

It is decreed that we will bring two bikes - the Circe and Jan's Thorn. That allows for the eventuality that I cycle alone (choice of steeds), Jan and I cycle (Circe) or Clare joins us (Clare stokes, Jan rides her Thorn). If three of us are awheel, I would expect nothing more exciting than the Sett Valley trail.

If Jan and Clare decide that cycling isn't for them, then if you fancy a potter somewhere, Kim, I'm upfrit. Could be car-assisted, or straight out the door, with tandem or solos. Winnatts isn't too far away.

I've rounded up a sufficiency of camping stuff.  I have the car from 1pm tomorrow.  Plan is to head to barakta's mum's in Disley and hang around there for a bit, before heading to the campsite on my own.  Looks like it's planning to chuck it down for most of tomorrow afternoon, so there doesn't seem much point in rushing.

Hope you're having a good weekend at Hayfield. I would've liked to be there today, my 21st Rebirth-Day, but I'm going to make sure I celebrate having 7,670 days of life that I wasn't expected to have. I'm aiming to be at Clitheroe in August and planning for a bit of an Itch' in the not too distant future too.

Would be good to see you, PD. It was nice to hear Kim's voice yesterday, albeit  through very wet ripstop. I am only half camping at the moment: I have been sleeping in the tent but eating indoors, having two non-campers in the forms of Jan and her sister to take into account. Hopefully that will change a bit tomorrow as they are supposed to come out here early* and partake in some sort of physical activity.

*traditionally, for Jan's family, mid-afternoon is considered early

Today there was hiking in high winds, cow-muddy off-roading (including a ford where Nothing happened) and what Nye describes as "another adventure to somewhere else".

Here's Wowbagger walking one of the less technical bits:

That's our route. The beautiful horizontal line represents the train ride and demonstrates that New Mills station is due west of Edale.

Many thanks to Kim for providing the route and the decision that that is what we would do. It was bloody hard work and I was aching the following day - not arthritis, but that pleasant whole-body muscular twinge which shows that you have been putting yourself through the paces. Total ascent: 2414' (736m).

Thanks to Nothing happening, I've got a multitude of aches and assorted interestingly-coloured bits.  Everything except the Achilles, it seems, so I'm declaring that an overall win.

As I said at the time, Knees™ mean that walking downhill can be problematic[1] for me, and even if I have to use the 24" gear to get up, a mountain bike lets me get back down again with much less walking.  It's nice to get to places like that, away from the roads.  I keep forgetting how fun technical off-road riding can be, though I admit my comfort zone for that involves more trying to stay upright in treacherous (but ultimately harmless) mud than bouncing downhill over scary-looking rocks at what's invariably the wrong speed.

There was a point where, about halfway up Coldwell Clough - and after a fair bit of faffing around with cows and navigation errors and descending the sort of rutted singletrack that could pass for a drainage ditch - proper mountain bikers in body armour started coming the other way.  I was feeling my general lack of fitness and started to have doubts about the sensibility of continuing, but turning back is abhorrent and the easiest bailout option was to push on to the main road.  Once we got to the top the going got much easier, the view became worth it, and - Wowbagger's mildly inappropriate bike[2] notwithstanding - I reckoned (more or less correctly) there wouldn't be as much prolonged unrideable stuff.  The pretty bit with the fords (and the rather enjoyable descent to get to them) made the whole thing worthwhile, IMHO.

[1] I had a moment walking on the moors above the Upper Derwent about 12 years ago where a fatigued knee failing to lock caused me to slip and twist an ankle.  Getting back down was slow going and unpleasant.
[2] Actually Mrs Wow's Thorn, which coped admirably well, given the limitations inherent in cow-muddy off-roading on touring tyres.  Just as well he didn't break it.  :)
Title: Re: Celebration
Post by: Wowbagger on 19 April, 2017, 01:14:37 pm
It was an excellent afternoon. Mrs. Wow's Thorn is a Raven Sport Tour, constructed of Reynolds 853 main tubes, 531 forks. The only difference in the frame is that her top tube is a bit shorter than mine. Her inside leg measurement is the same as mine despite her being 3" shorter than I am. Long after I bought my Thorn Raven ST, I found that they recommend that only riders weighing less than 16 stones should ride them. In all the time I have had it I have been well in excess of 16st. I also regularly and gratuitously exceed their recommended luggage limit. My bike's frame has survived almost 36000 miles of this sort of abuse and is still a lovely ride. I would suggest that Robin Thorn and Andy Blance are being rather cautious in their recommendations regarding this frame.

I am glad that your injuries are healing well, Kim. I have to say that I was a trifle concerned when, on impact, I asked you if you were OK and you replied "I'll get back to you on that..."

I have to say that our timing at the cafe was perfect, at 2.50pm. They were serving their "Hillwalker Special" breakfast until 3pm and then it was possible to move seamlessly into a scone-style cream tea...

First rule of nasty falls:  Stay still until you've considered each body part individually and worked out what's serious, rather than just paying attention to what hurts the most.  Doesn't half make onlookers worry, thobut.

In this case what hurt most was my right ankle, which was twisted into an unnatural position due to being entangled with the bike, but wasn't actually injured.  It was sensible to establish that I hadn't broken any arms or wrists (which also hurt) before wriggling free of that.
