Title: Dufton (Cumbria) mostly camping weekend - 9th-11th October 2015
Post by: Deano on 17 June, 2015, 11:24:23 pm
While riding up Great Dun Fell last week, I thought that Dufton would make an excellent location for a camping/hostelling weekend.

Dufton on a map, for those who don't know this remote bit of the Pennines (http://streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=368860&y=525280&z=120&sv=dufton&st=3&tl=Map+of+Dufton,+Cumbria+[Town).

Different map: https://goo.gl/maps/mbFgC

It's wonderfully remote, but entirely accessible from Penrith - it's about 14 non-A66 miles and not-flat miles from the west coast mainline (Penrith), and about 4 not-flat miles from the nearest station at Appleby (which would require a change at Carlisle if coming up the west coast, or Leeds if coming via the east coast). Bus services seem to be infrequent to non-existent, but a group cab from Appleby would probably be doable.

Needless to say, it's absurdly easy to get to by car (just off the A66), and the nearest shop is probably Appleby.

I don't think I really need to sell the location that much, but I was thinking of a Saturday ride (each at their own pace!) up to the radar station, which at 848 metres is the highest road in Britain, and has been described as England's Mont Ventoux. A military road (ie no cars!) up to the radar station at the summit of Great Dun Fell, blast back down, then have a pint in Dufton. Faster riders can do it twice, and lay in provisions at the top for the slower riders ;)

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/505/18548525448_f64ef9f1dc_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/ug53oU)

There's a lovely description on the Cleveland Wheelers website (http://clevelandwheelers.com/great-dun-fell-the-highest-road-in-britain/) - since they'll know the North Yorks Moors, they know what they're talking about. It took me nearly an hour, though that included photos, sheep-herding and a headwind. (https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=91272.0)

Of course, everyone would be entirely free to ride wherever they liked, or doss about as much as they liked, and there are loads of other places to go. The walking opportunities are fabulous as Dufton is on the Pennine Way, and there's a bridleway from the village leading up the side of the astonishing glacial valley, High Cup, for walking/comedy offroading opportunities:

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2436/4006705318_fa1602f09c_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/774pUb)

I was thinking of late September or early October, arrive on Friday, depart on Sunday, and mostly camping, though Dufton is very useful in that is also has a YHA for more comfort/warmth/properbeds/en-suite facilities/breakfast (although I've had a quick check, and it does seem to fill up very quickly!), and Dufton also has a pub, for food and meet-up purposes. It's an infeasibly pretty village:

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/315/18715769830_590aea6caf_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/uvRdjJ)
(note the snow on the tops in April - the hill immediately in the background is Dufton Pike, the radar station is not-quite visible in the taller hills beyond)

Campsite: http://www.duftoncaravanpark.co.uk

The red squirrel photo isn't just advertising - I did see a red squirrel there, the one time I've camped there. It is a bit functional - the last time I was there in 2011, it was basically a static caravan park with a token bit in the middle for lightweight campers (I camped behind one of the empty statics, hence the squrl spot). Decent toilets and showers, though.

Edited 22/06/2015 - this will now take place the weekend Friday 9th October to Sunday 11th October 2015, and it's now camping only (unless you get lucky at the YHA, but you'll have to make your own arrangements)

Info about costs

(Some of this is available on the website)

Some info from the owners:

£20 per night for family-sized tents
£20 per night for campervans/caravans (same price whether leccy hookup is required or not)

£7 per night for lightweight campers

Parking and stuff is on the website.

Updated 06/10/15 - notes for riders to the site

1. Beware the Penrith one-way system! It's caught out many a rider. It's actually OK going south, but going north, it's a pain. I would suggest that you stay north of the A66 when returning to Penrith.

2. Penrith station is uphill - bear this in mind when returning.

3. Suggested route to Dufton: http://ridewithgps.com/trips/6738924

(This goes via Appleby, so is also relevant to anyone riding from Appleby - I think I've routed it to the Co Op, which is on your right after you cross the river - probably best to get any provisions there, though there are big supermarkets in Penrith if you don't mind carting a couple of pints of milk etc around)

3a. Why not visit the Hoff (http://streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=367612&y=517705&z=120&sv=367612,517705&st=4&ar=y&mapp=map.srf&searchp=ids.srf&dn=584&ax=367612&ay=517705&lm=0) while you're passing? There's a road sign and everything. It is uphill from Appleby, mind.

4. Alternative route to the north: http://ridewithgps.com/trips/6738926

(You can follow lanes to Langwathby, and this is the C2C route, but it's hillier and you end up on the A686 anyway as there isn't another nearby crossing of the Eden - it's all lanes after Langwathby.)

Dean, I can't say I can definitely come, yet, but I'm going to be desperate for some hills by then and the fact that the climb itself is traffic-free is very attractive.  As you say, there's so much to see and do on and off the bike.  That's a fabulous shot of the whinsill!

I'm definitely interested.  Probably train up to Appleby for me.

We'd love to especially the downhill bit on the tandem, however our autumn is crazy busy this year so we'll have to give it a miss. But if you do it again we'd love to come.

That's two people who can't do late September and early October.

11th October, anyone? I don't want to push it out much further as we'll start to hit half term and lose daylight. Early October's lovely, though.

I'll probably organise a poll about camping and stuff when I'm a bit less lurgified *sniff*

It'd be cool if you could make it, Bob, but no worries if not.

I've had a quick look at the hostel's website - it seems to book up really far in advance. If you're really lucky, they might be advance bookings which are cancelled, but I reckon it's a camping weekend.

Everyone ok with camping? Once I have some idea of numbers, I'll give the site a call to make sure they can cope.

It's not surprising that the youth hostel gets booked up quick: it's one of the stops on the Pennine Way.  Me, I avoided that problem by doing the hike in the middle of winter, though that raised the alternative problem that most of the hostels were closed!

Have tent, will also travel.

Thanks, everyone!

I've added it to the calendar (happily, this weekend coincides with Kim's birthday - I can't think of a better way to celebrate than riding a bike up a great bike hill, except perhaps riding a bike back down the hill...) and updated the OP.

I'll give the site a call and check everything's OK with a group coming. Plus a campervan.

I might give the YHA a call as well - apart from anything else, it's an extra food option, and a possible bail-out option if the weather turns vile.

I might even ride across to check everything out. This is not an excuse to go offroading with a tent around the Pennines. Not at all.

How about riding a bike up a great big hill in the rain?  Because that's what always happens when I take a bike to that part of the country...

Does anyone have anything they want me to ask the campsite?

(Yes, I know, "do they allow open fires", but since the lightweight camping bit was surrounded by static caravans the last time I was there, I reckon that'll be a firm no)

I doubt that'll be necessary - it's a freeform campsite, so there will be other folk with dogs. Hopefully Kim will see this and clarify once she's recovered from her Welsh adventuring.

No problem with dogs on a campsite, as long as they're well behaved enough to keep their distance and not slobber on me / my stuff.  It's being indoors with them for prolonged periods (especially doggy houses) that tends to cause problems.

Early October's the best time for me allergy-wise anyway - all the hayfever's gone, but it's not quite time for my annual Whitby Weekend chest infection.

It'll be good to see you.

I just tried to call the campsite (they don't have the lightweight campers' rate on their website), but no answer. I'll try again later.

I doubt it'll be a problem anyway - but I'll call ahead and confirm, and ask you lot what time you're arriving and how etc. Later - no need to tell me now.

If anyone does have owt they want me to ask the site, let me know.

The YHA looks fully booked, but I'm on hold with them at the mo' on the offchance that someone needs a bailout option/additional creature comforts.

Contact!

Some info from the owners:

£20 per night for family-sized tents
£20 per night for campervans/caravans (same price whether leccy hookup is required or not)

£7 per night for lightweight campers

Parking and stuff is on the website.

They don't expect it'll be a problem fitting us all in, and a couple of people in small tents won't make any difference, but I'd like to call and get some space booked as soon as I can. I'll start bothering you all with PMs in the next day or two.

I think that's it! Bring your own food, or there's a pub in the village, or we can send bunbury shopping in Appleby. If anyone does want to arrange mass cooking, be my guest.

(No joy at the youth hostel, by the way - I think that's out of the question)

Wait, you've a campervan?!

There are a few B&Bs in Dufton, if anyone doesn't want to rough it. Eg:

I think £20 /night is very steep for 1 person in a tiny campervan. Have just emailed them to see whether they would accept £10 / night, otherwise I may be in a small tent or parked in the carpark.

We have an awning for our campervan (The Awnopolis, as christened by Clare OTP) that sleeps 2 - I wonder if the camper + awning = £20 or £40/night? If £20, that's available to whoever would like it, otherwise we'll do without.

Presumably just a van counts as a car, and it's the tent you pay for.

It might be different if they're sleeping in it!

The website says there's free camping in the village, or £2 per night onsite. I'll call back once I have a clearer idea of how our motley crüe are accommodating themselves.

We're still possibles.   Small tent on the larger side of small.

I read the tariffs as £7 per pitch which includes one person for a small tent and a fiver for an extra person.   Is that your interpretation Deano?

I could just ring them of course.

mllePB will be investigating train options over the weekend.  If we join you we will cycle from Penrith.   Fully loaded I expect it to take about a week!   :o   :D

That there High Cup looks worth a look... on the map there's an obvious return route via Scordale.  And if you go a bit further, there's "Great Cocklanke" and "Cauldron Snout", which seem like suitable destinations for a YACF ride...

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CYCLE DOWN CAULDRON SNOUT!!  :o ;D

It's a tricky enough walk...

Cow Green-High Cup is the route I'll be coming, assuming I'm riding over (which is weather and time-dependent - I'm not sure I'd be up to riding straight into a howling westerly for 50 miles). ISTR it took about three hours from Cow Green to High Cup. It would probably have been easier with knobbly tyres, as there was a lot of trudging across peat bogs.

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/576/21190642165_7c1cb85de3_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/yhxzDp)

I think the track by Maize Beck is more like the above, with added rockiness, but it's a long time since I went that way. The photo is just above Birkdale. It'd be a full day out on the bike from Dufton - take sandwiches! Navigation is quite tricky going west-east, as there are fewer landmarks - there are trig points on the hills either side of High Cup, so it's fairly easy to follow, as long as the clouds don't roll in. I assume you'd be following a track, mind.

I'll probably be leading the hordes up to the radar station, anyway, but I'm happy enough to have different groups :)

Nah, it's not that bad. It's just a bit constantly up-and-down, whether you go north of the A66 or south of it, as you're crossing loads of little valleys.

Are you looking at before or after the trip? If after then you would be welcome to stay here :)

The EldestCub's most favourite campsite in the world is (we think, after googling and looking at some photos) Fisherground campsite, Eskdale, Cumbria.  He's been there with his grandad.

Of course the reason it is his favourite campsite in the work is the pond-with-tyre-rafts.  Depending how far up your wishlist that is, you might not share his view :D

Looks as though he is, and the slowest time on Strava (if it ain't on Strava etc) is a sprightly 1 hour 53 minutes for the 7.4 km segment:

Re my reservations about cycling on the Pennine Way, a look at the map reveals it actually to be bridleway up to High Cup Nick, so I suppose it's possible.  It looks very steep, though!  I'd like to look at the Roman road nprth-west out of Appleby, which is also shown to be a bridleway and is about 3 miles long.

I think I shall have to dip out of this, which is a shame.

I am on grand-dad duty on the Thursday, so I would have to travel on the Friday. Returning on the Sunday is not an option as there is a replacement bus service between Shipley and Leeds. I would have to come back on Monday so would be Billy No-mates for Sunday. 14 hours of train travel for a single day's bike ride seems a little excessive, no matter how lovely the countryside. I could bugger off to East Anglia for the weekend and get three good rides in, admittedly without England's Mont Ventoux.

I've just called and confirmed what I think is happening. I'm going to go in person on Saturday anyway, as I'll be passing on my way back from the Lakes. He was probably wanting a deposit anyway, so I may as well.

This is what I think we have:

Lightweight solo campers
Me
Kim
lantern_rouge
andrewc
Steve GT
Peter
Wowbagger?

Lightweight inna tent for two
Polar Bear + 1

Family tent
boab, Chris S, CrinklyLion + cubs

Campervan
JenM (already booked)
Woolly + peli + Tilley + (possibly) Wowbagger

Caravan
Madcow + 1 (already booked)

Let me know if that sounds OK - and I'll ask about the awning on the side of the van when I get there. But don't fret about it, we'll work it out.

By the way, as they only have 4 pitches for vans, he was talking about shutting it to others, so we might have the place to ourselves (apart from any long-term residents and maybe the odd Pennine Way walker).

It may be easiest if I coordinate cash, but again, I'll chat to him about this on Saturday, and I'll let you all know.

Shout up if there's anything else you want me to ask when I'm there.

Right, I've been and spoken to Mike, and handed in the deposit.

The highlights are that it's not a huge space - but plenty for us. Boab, if tentopolis is longer than 5 or 6 metres, you may struggle, as that's the width limit of the camping area, but you can have one of the hard-standing areas if that's an issue. If not, you get to colonise one end of it, and there's a sturdy fence you can use for fixing purposes.

It's £20 for a van or a family tent (excepting Jen, who's negotiated a single person discount). Awnings not a problem.

£7 per person for lightweight campers - I think the only people affected by this are PB and P,  as everyone else is solo.

The only shift on price was that I get in free ??? - I've no idea how to spread this fairly amongst the group, suggestions welcome!

I'll handle the cash (with slight question marks in the case of Jen and madcow - if you guys have already paid or want to pay yourselves, that's fine, just let me know).

Food - the pub has a tiny kitchen, and as we're a large group, they said they would want pre-orders.

So, shall we say let's self-cater/make our own arrangements on Friday (as everyone will be there at different times), and I'll book the pub for those who want it on Saturday night, assuming there's demand. I mean, we could all order a takeaway from somewhere in Appleby that delivers, as an alternative (or send someone down to collect - it's about three miles, albeit with a fairly substantial hill up to Dufton), but the food at the pub is meant to be good,  we may want to escape from the weather, and the menu looks alright:

http://www.thestagdufton.co.uk/our-menu/

For the daytime, there's also a cafe in the village now, and Mike said they would be amenable to opening early on the Saturday if there were a few of us wanting breakfast, Mike said it's very good.

As an alternative, the YHA does let other people come in for their breakfasts and evening meals, but Mike said the food at the cafe is better.

I'll try and get there first (or at least amongst the first) on Friday, to set aside a space for tentopolis, and to wave everyone else in the right direction. I'll send round a PM when I  get chance with my mobile number, and a few questions about your arrival time and eating preferences.

No fires allowed! I didn't ask, but having seen the available space, just no.

I have tickets and a plan. This involves travelling to Skipton and cadging a lift with the lovely Woollipelis.

@Jenm: the ticket price on the W. Coast line was ridiculously expensive.

I've got a tent, sleeping bag and a bike.  I've never cycle-camped before, though I have camped and occasionally cycled.  I'm going to be bringing everything on the back of the bike so weight is a consideration for the longer return ride from Shipley to Leeds.  I'm talking about the weight for the wheel rather than hauliing it; the latter will be no problem because I'm well 'ard (and the canal is well flat).  I'm thinking of compromising by not bringing cooking equipment but relying on take-aways, "dry goods", etc. from Appleby and the cafe and pub in Dufton.  I think I'll probably opt for a Saturday night meal at the pub, Dean, and I'll confirm this as soon as I've checked the likely minimal choice for vegetarians.  I suppose my main concern would be hot drinks in the evenings, it being October.  If I bring the makings, would somebody be able to boil up water for drinks for me?

Lot of words for a short question - so here's another:-

I've tried out the tent, which should be fine.  But my matress won't fit.  I'm thinking that a mat is going to be the most transportable option.  Does anyone have any recommendations?

~Thanks

Peter

We have these (http://www.simplyhike.co.uk/products/Thermarest/NeoAirTrekkerMat/221643.aspx?gclid=CjwKEAjw1f6vBRC7tLqO_aih5WISJAAE0CYwbVSJ2sVBUoMpIblF5nGFKKkTRfySJmT0ZhUPeAWrNBoCHjvw_wcB) and have had no trouble with them.

We also have one of these (http://www.tesco.com/direct/tesco-raised-double-air-bed-with-electric-pump/753-3608.prd?skuId=753-3608&pageLevel=sku&sc_cmp=ppc_sh-_-sh-_-tesco-_-753-3608&gclid=CjwKEAjw1f6vBRC7tLqO_aih5WISJAAE0CYwsINnjtX7-bb0pfbRaIRZXmf6W5MLOoqVNGOma5tDyxoCeS_w_wcB) and have had no trouble with that, either.

You pays your money, and like bikes, you can have good, cheap, light. Pick any two.

Cheap airbeds tend to be comfortable, easy to puncture and crap at fitting in tents (or luggage, for that matter).

Barakta and I lived on one (well, more than one, see above re: easy to punture) for over a year.

Do we need to contact anybody Deano re camping or eating in the pub?

As above (https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=91406.msg1921405#msg1921405), I'll organise the Friday and Saturday nights for camping, and food at the pub on Saturday, and probably an early opening at the cafe on Saturday.

Anything else, organise yourselves, but if you're arriving on the Friday, just speak to Mike on the Monday about an extra night's camping.

I'll be PM-ing everyone soon-ish. Next few days. No rush, and I'm organising a piss-up this weekend.

Thanks Deano.   Can you please put us down to eat at the pub with you on Saturday and we'll sort ourselves for the rest of our stay.   Thank you.

I have no problem with you enjoying your free place as you've done the legwork, for which we are all most grateful.  I know as an event organiser myself, that you'll have  given time and spent your own money in research and organisation already, and that this does not necessarily end when the event starts.  Also, much easier to manage as you don't have to try to spread pennies amongst everybody.

A friend of mine is 'fairly certain' she will join us for the weekend, but cannot entirely commit as may have to help clear a house prior to sale. She will be camping in a small tent and I shall do the catering so no breakfast / pub requirements.

Hi - Steve GT the camping virgin here...

I have a tent and and a sleeping bag.
The sleeping bag is a '2 season'  one, so I plan to bring an extra blanket for some extra warmth.
I plan to buy this mat:
http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/hi-gear-ultralite-3-4-self-inflating-mat-p287153 (http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/hi-gear-ultralite-3-4-self-inflating-mat-p287153)
Is it any good?
Should  I also be thinking about getting a ground sheet to put the tent on?

You won;t need a groundsheet - it's decent grass at the site, no stones or owt.

Notes for riders to the site:

Mallerstang.
"From Nateby, climb up and up a wonderful tranquil climb with great views till towards the top a smart ramp further tests the stamina till over the top, then a rolling top some distance before dropping down through a picturesque valley with crags above a river and camping opportunities. "

That doesn't look like Mallerstang! That's Birkdale. Mallerstang's a bit up and down to the Eden, then a steady rise to the railway and down to Garsdale.

Birkdale is a bit of a pig. Look at those lovely chevrons.

There's an exhibition devoted to Yves-St-Laurent at the Bowes Museum, and of course the Langdon Beck Hotel has a permanent geology exhibit. That might make a nice day out, for those who combine interests in fashion and rocks.

Excellent weekend expertly organised by Deano. It was, as ever, lovely to see everyone again.  I will gloss over my slight accident with the very tasty 6% beer on the Friday, although this was probably a blessing in disguise: it meant that I set off for the top of the Great Dun fell about an hour after everyone else, so no-one felt obliged to wait for me at the top. I was even more glacially slow than I normally am.

Many thanks to Mr & Mrs Madcow, who invited me into their caravan to watch Wales v Australia and plied me with tea and very good chocolate cake while we watched. The meal was very good indeed, the steak being done to perfection, the only disappointment being that Woolly and Peli, having Tilley the Dog with them, were banished from the restaurant and had to eat their meal in the bar.

We are in Skipton again now, well-fed with the lovely Peli's lovely home-made soup, and we will be partaking of curry from the Mastab Indian Restaurant (http://www.just-eat.co.uk/restaurants-mustabs-bd23/menu?opt=0a344914) later. We are all very keen on Mastab Asian food.

Home now.  My Pendolino was broken, and therefore running late:  It couldn't manage more than 100mph, didn't appear to be pendoleaning and didn't smell of poo.  I'm not sure whether there's a causal relationship between these things.

Thanks, everyone! I think that all worked, on the whole. I'll issue an anonymised survey later to collate feedback. Maybe.

Lovely to see everyone, and to have a special mystery guest appearance from Rufus on Saturday. A few people asked me how I managed to organise the weather - that must remain a secret, but I'll take thanks in beer, cake or AUK vouchers.

I have about a million photos to go through, but for now here's the ET shot of Kim near the top of Great Dun Fell:

Now south of Stevenage after a lovely evening with Woolly and Peli. There was a casualty of some sort almost immediately we left Leeda and the train was delayed at Wakefield when, firstly, an appeal was made for a doctor and then an ambulance was called. The paramedics left empty handed and we carried on, so hopefully the patient made a remarkable recovery.

He/she probably just realized how much a walk on ticket to Londontown had just cost them and had a minor heart attack.

Thanks again to Deano for organising a great weekend. Sometimes it needs someone to organise something just to get me out of the inertia zone that is normal life.
Nice to meet everyone and put names to faces and do a bit of cycling as well.
We pootled down to Kirby Stephen yesterday and called in here on the way back

So, I made two rookie mistakes on this trip:

First, trusting Deano on the matter of hills.  It was indeed long, but a bit more than a drag.

Second, overlooking the fact that Cumbria is practically Scotland - at least in ecological terms - and in the rare event that it stops raining[1], the midges appear.  I neglected to bring my DEET, and now have an itchy hand and the letters "AB" written in Braille on the back of my neck.  I assume this is an attempt at labelling my blood type, with a level of competence typical of the Dufton midges (it is in fact B-).  Seriously, these were the rubbishest midges I've ever encountered.  Lots of flying around and getting in the way, but almost no biting, and they'd just sit there and be squished when you try to brush them off.  Sadly what they lacked in midging skills they made up for in sheer numbers.

[1] In my defence, this trip was the only time I've ever witnessed the phenomenon.

Hold on!

It’s a constantly tough gradient - I had imagined it being something like Hartside, a gentle gradient which you can spin up, but no. It’s a slow grind (especially with that north-easterly which was picking up as I gained altitude), and the radar station never seems to get any closer.

It took me over an hour to reach the summit.

Where did I say it was a long drag?!

Cor.  Maybe I wasn't really paying attention?  (Supporting evidence: Attended camping trip in Cumbria in October.)

As you were.

Also, while I did have to stop several times to get my breath back, it didn't actually seem *that* bad.  Certainly not as bad as the Gospel Pass, though admittedly I've only ridden that with full touring kit, and on a 'bent I'm probably biased strongly by the quality of the road surface.  At no point did I come close to losing traction.

Thanks Deano,  that was a great weekend.  It was lovely to see so many friends again.   Lovely countryside as well,  I must spend more time up there next year.

A decent campsite with a cafe & good pub to hand, what more could a bunch of cyclists want ?

The ride up showed me how unfit I was , and the ride down how daft... my GPS said 54mph  :o

Anyway, some photos,

Great pictures!

Deano - I shamelessly pinched one of yours for use elsewhere - hope that's OK!

While you lot cycled, we (Peli, Mrs Wow, Tilley and me) walked around Dufton Pike. Jolly little walk, great views and weather. Sadly we didn't spot you lot on the top.

A lark, A Lark, well it's a three

Follow the yellow marker, towards another Pike (I don't think it is related to the Pike of this parish).

Sssshh they can hear you now, but we can't see the cyclist.

Here is one I made earlier, well about 5000 years ago according to the map/guide we borrowed from the Bears.

Not all my pictures came out, I'm afraid - probably the red mist!

Great.  I think you could rename "Cheering spectator".  How about "Hey, that's MY bike!"?

Absolutely gutted to miss this...think I am going to have to pop up in the next week or so and ride it anyway...have serious ride envy at the moment.

I wonder if there were any cyclists up there yesterday?
