Garmin Express

Has anyone suffered from Garmin Express not recognising their unit?
I've just bought a new Touring Plus. I connected it to my pc and tried to add it to Garmin Express.
My unit wasn't recognised. I explained all of this to Garmin in Southampton and they said they'd
replace my Touring Plus (bear in mind the unit was less than a week old).

Anyhow, I've received the replacement unit, loaded up the latest version of Garmin Express
(version 4.4.0.0), have the latest Garmin drivers, used the Garmin usb cable but still Garmin Express
doesn't see my Touring Plus.

I followed some instructions Garmin gave me, but still no joy.
  • Go to Computer or This PC
  • Open the Local Disk (C:) drive
  • Go to ProgramData
  • Go to the Garmin folder
  • Go to the CoreService folder
  • Delete the contents of the folder

  • Has anyone else had similar problems?

Does anything at all happen when you plug it into the USB port?

Does the device power up?
Does it go into USB mode ( on other edge models, usually a picture of a PC on the device's screen )?

Does windows ( what version? ) give any indication it's found a device?
Does it appear as a drive in Windows Explorer?

The unit goes into Mass Storage mode.

Does the device power up?
Yes it does.

Goes into Mass Storage mode. Is this the same as USB mode?

Does windows ( what version? ) give any indication it's found a device?
Windows sees it as an extra drive.

Does it appear as a drive in Windows Explorer?
It is shown as a D drive.

Right, so all that is working.
There's no problem with the device.

So the problem is with your Garmin Express installation, it seems.

I don't know how to troubleshoot that.
I'd un-install it and re-install it in the first instance.
Beyond that, I'd be googling.
You might try the Garmin forums, but I've not found them to be very useful.

It might be that there is some other software on your system that is interfering with communication between Garmin Express and the USB device.
Perhaps some "Security" software ( AV, anti-malware etc etc ).
Try disabling these things as a test.

Why bother with Garmin Express? Does it do anything useful?
Its easy enough just to do a manual upload of your activities to Garmin Connect / Strava etc.

Yes, that's the other option.

When Garmin moved to Modern view, the old 'Upload' button disappeared, and the mantra was you had to use Garmin Express to upload.

That's quietly gone away, and manual uploads can now be done again.
So as long as the device appears as a drive in windows, you can just manually upload from the Activities folder.

The manual upload button is a bit hidden in the Modern view:
At the Top Right, next to the default 'Fitness' tab name, there's a + icon.
Click the +, and select Import Data.
Click the Browse button, select the FIT file, and Impost it.
