Alpkit headtorch + rechargeables?
« on: 23 February, 2017, 01:07:58 pm »
According to alpkit, the Gamma II can't be used with rechargeables.

Can anyone advise whether this is a fact or an alternative fact? I can't see why not, are they just regurgitating CYA wording from the manufacturer?

Alternatively, recommend a simple but well made headtorch to replace the petzl that just went through the 40 degree cycle.  :-\

I have used Eneloops in mine for several years (2 or 3) without problems; I didn't consider that there might be one. The only problem I had was the lugs falling off the battery compartment lid recently; whether that is a common problem anyway, or due to Eneloop use (slightly longer than alkaline AAs?) or a heavy-handed user, I don't know.

New compartment for free from Alpkit by return post (full marks).

They don't say it can't they say it will invalidate the warranty.

I've used rechargeables in mine (didn't read fine print).

I guess the problem might be that rechargeable NiMh have a lower voltage and that might cause problems with the control circuits. Difficult to see how that would invalidate the warranty. Maybe kim might have an idea.

Seems odd to me.  Maybe a physical design thing as Marco Stefano suggests?

Usual problem with NiMH is things designed for alkalines switching off prematurely due to the lower cell voltage, which would be frustrating but harmless.

Lugs breaking is a fairly common problem. I have had two break.

They do - lower down

Thanks for confirming it will work, as no-one's suggested an alternative I've ordered one.
