What to do on the Isle of Wight?
« on: 10 April, 2017, 12:52:48 pm »
Not been there for 33 years, but am off for a few days with my kiddies (5 & 7). We know about Carisbrooke castle, Osborne House and Blackgang Chine, but does anyone have any other recommendations, please?

My colleague lives on the island, he suggests the following:

Monkey Haven http://www.monkeyhaven.org/

Steam railway http://www.iwsteamrailway.co.uk/

Alum Bay is an expensive way of buying coloured sand.

If you are travelling by car and are using the Portsmouth ferries don't arrive way too early, they are redeveloping the dock and keep having to turn people away because there is nowhere to park.

Our kids always loved Blackgang Chine. Monkey Haven is good too. There's a few ride things on the beach at Ryde which ours loved for years.

Not so much for them as for you, but I'd recommend lunch at the Garlic Farm. They still have some kids stuff to do, it's worth a visit.

My in-laws always used to take the kids pottery painting somewhere too, somewhere that had a bloody amazing café with the best scones ever. Can't remember where it was though

The amount of times I've been to Butterfly world.............

I liked Shanklin Chine when we went a few years ago.

Anything free/cheap between Ryde and Bembridge which is worth seeing? (for adults or kids)

Check if there are vampires by thanking them to the Garlic Farm. Try the ice cream = nom!

There is a brewery or two, if you leave the kids in the car, remember a bowl of water and to open the window a crack :)

Crazy golf!

Yes, 2-3 magazines on the ferry of what to do, all very full stuff for everyone.

For a moment I thought that was Channel View Hotel Shanklin. I used to deliver newspapers there as part of my paper round.

Walk the cliff path to Shanklin, then back along the sea wall. Take in ice cream as you go.

Seaview is nice. So is The Duver at St Helens. If you're feeling energetic on the day you go to Blackgang Chine take a walk up to The Pepperpot. Lovely views from up there.

Personally I prefer West Wight. Drive along the Milly Road to Freshwater. Stop at Compton or Brook beaches on the way. Look for fossils. Walk. Enjoy the scenery.

'Dave', mostly.

Worth reading the TripAdvisor reviews. Very polarised between 'excellent' and 'terrible'

It's fucking mental here, and I'm mildly perturbed by the fact that I love it.

That's the normal disquieting terrain when ones confronts the reality of who we really are as opposed to what we think we really are :-)
It's also a holiday. Time to chill.
That reminds me.....bout time I got off somewhere too...

How does it compare to Hotel Commodore in Llandrindod Wells?
What on earth am I doing here on this beautiful day?! This is the only life I've got!!

It's interesting you should mention that, as it brought it all back to me. The fabric of the place is similar, but whereas the Commodore was just depressing this place is just full on mental.

I like it. I like it a lot, and I'm not sure why.

In the reviews, this says it all:

After the Shanklin Chine there's the Chankley Bore and the Gromboolian Plain.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

Well that was weird.

Off the back of the old ski lift down to Alum bay, they've created one of those tourist monstrosities with a few shit fairground rides, a sub-motorway service station 'restaurant' with possibly the shittest food I've ever seen at an astronomical price, massive sweetshop with a steady flow of weeble people wobbling in and then wobbling out 5 minutes later clutching bags and bags of sugar in various forms.

It was called 'The Needles landmark attraction', and yet I saw almost none of them actually go down to the Needles battery from where one can actually see the...err...Needles. possibly because it involved over an hour of walking to get there and back as no cars are allowed.

The actually headland, the old and new batteries, are National Trust owned and run, and we had a fabulous time looking around the old rocket testing site and then around the older victorian fort. We even had a cream tea up there. Jolly nice.

Kids a bit knackered out now as we also had an hours walk along the beach at Compton. Now off out to dinner, probably in Shanklin.
